    Narrative music: towards an understanding of musical narrative functions in multimedia

    As the computer screen is replacing the book as the dominant medium for communication (Kress, 2003), questions about how meaning is constituted by the multimodal interaction of different media (including music) is becoming increasingly important in contemporary research of pedagogy, sociology and media studies. The overall aim with this licentiate thesis is to explore musical narrative functions as they appear in multimedia such as film and computer games. The thesis is based on three publications. Publication 1 proposes a classification of musical narrative functions, with 6 narrative classes(the Emotive, Informative, Descriptive, Guiding, Temporal and Rhetorical classes) and 11 categories. The relational interplay of music with contextual factors is emphasized. Publication 2 describes the design of a software tool, REMUPP (Relations Between Musical Parameters and Perceived Properties), to be used for experimental studies of musical expression. REMUPP is used for real time alteration of musical expression, by the manipulation of musical parameters such as tempo, harmony, rhythm, articulation, etc. Publication 3 describes a quasi-experiment using REMUPP, where a group of young participants (12-13 years old) were given the task of adapting musical expression – by manipulating 7 parameters – to make it fit 3 visual scenes shown on a computer screen. They also answered a questionnaire asking about their musical backgrounds and habits of listening to music, watching movies and playing computer games. Numerical data from the manipulations were analyzed statistically with regards to the preferred values of the musical parameters in relation to the different visual scenes. The results indicated awareness and knowledge about codes and conventions of musical narrative functions, and were to some degree affected by the participants’ gender, musical backgrounds and media habits

    The effectiveness of the creativity trigger module in achieving higher levels of creative thinking among prospective teachers

    The unoptimised level of creative thinking is seen as an issue among Semester 8 prospective teachers in Malaysian Teacher-Education Institutes (IPG). This could impede their teaching of creative thinking as one of the four components of 21st century skills in schools. In relation to this, this study sets out to investigate prior creativity levels of IPG prospective teachers and develop the Creativity Trigger Module (CTM) as a training module for enhancing their creativity. The Torrance Tests of Creative Thinking (TTCT) was used to compare the prior creativity levels of four respondent groups and test the effectiveness of the CTM on five dimensions of figural creativity, namely fluency, originality, elaboration, resistance to premature closure, abstractness of titles, and their overall creativity. A two-stage cluster sampling technique identified two IPGs with 68 respondents in the state of Johor namely, IPG-Kampus Tun Hussein Onn, Batu Pahat (IPGKTHO) as the control group site (34 respondents), and IPG- Kampus Temenggong Ibrahim, Johor Bahru (IPGKTI) as the treatment group site (34 respondents). Mathematics (MT) and Design and Technology (RBT) are the only two specialist subject combinations that provided enough sample size at both test sites. A quasi-experimental research design was used and this involved intact classes. Data analysis was carried out as follows: ANOVA, ANCOVA, and Wilcoxon Signed Rank Test analysis for TTCT scores while data analysis based on the NVivo software was used for the focus group interviews. Findings on prior creativity levels showed average or low creativity levels among all 4 test groups with IPGKTHO and RBT options having significantly higher posttest marks as compared to IPGKTI and MT option respectively. The CTM was found to improve significantly respondents’ posttest marks for the treatment group in all the five dimensions of figural creativity and, their overall creativity. Feedback from respondents revealed positive support for the CTM. In conclusion, the prior creativity of IPG prospective teachers was at an unoptimised level before treatment but the CTM has been successfully developed as an effective resource for enhancing the creative thinking levels among IPG prospective teachers

    The world of electronic publishing changes quickly, and CD-ROM is the latest technology. Many electronic publishers are getting involved in what is called CD-ROM publishing (also called Optical publishing). CD-ROM means Compact-Disc Read Only Memory. CD-ROM publishing changes the way information is presented, searched, retrieved, and distributed. Electronic publishing takes on a whole new identity with CD-ROMs. The computer screen now replaces hard copy as the viewing medium. This is why CD-ROMs are called the new CD-ROMs allow the user to deal with dynamic and moving images in lieu of static ones. The technology promotes the fact that CD-ROM applications are fun and entertaining ways to learn as well as allowing interaction with the user. Some CD-ROM products already on the market include children\u27s books, reference books, and adventure games. CD-ROMs also offer users of the desktop many advantages including high storage capacity, permanency, and easy accessibility to data. However, the biggest disadvantage to CD-ROM is its slow seek time and data transfer rate. This thesis project is comprised of two parts. The first part involves the creation of a CD-ROM application. In this case, it is a poster book. The poster book was designed to give the impression of motion within the pages. Some of the hardware and software utilized in the implementation of the poster book include QuarkXPress, Adobe Illustrator, Adobe Photoshop, and the Macintosh Quadra 700. Using Kodak\u27s Writable CD-ROM hardware and software, the poster book\u27s digital file was then written to a CD-ROM disc. The second part of this thesis project involves the development of a reference guide. The reference guide explains the basic steps on how to create a CD-ROM application. It is designed to serve desktop users and novices to CD-ROM technology. Most resources that were available were too complex for any beginner to comprehend in completing their CD-ROM projects. The Reference Guide to CD-ROM Technology covers the fol lowing topics: data collection, text preparation, image preparation, sound preparation, disc origination, data submission guidelines, disc production, and data protection. The last chapter of the reference guide provides a list of CD-ROM manufacturers that can be consulted for more in-depth information on CD-ROMs. Upon completion of this thesis project, a questionnaire was used in evaluating the CD-ROM application, Art in Motion. The viewers were asked to compare the CD-ROM version to the printed version. The results were then summarized at the end of the study

Of late, information technologies have come to their rescue. Many technologies-magnetic as well as optical have been tried for the past many years for mass storage of information. While magnetic drum and tape are, heading towards obsolescence, optical' technologies with their enormous storage capacities are trying to fill the gap. This paper overviews the various 'technologies available for mass storage in the library environment. The paper covers the magnetic storage devices including magnetic tape, magnetic disc, cartridge tape and digital audio tape. The optical disc storage technologies including read-only, write once read many and erasable/rewritable media have been described. The role of optical discs in making electronic publishing a popular technology has also been described. Future trends in the mass storage technologies like volume holographic technology, electronic trap and proximal probe technologies, and fluorescent multi-layered technology which are under various stages of development have also been briefly discussed.     An Historical Survey on Light Technologies

    Following the celebration of the International Year of Light and Light-based Technologies in 2015, this paper presents a survey of the exploitation of light throughout our history. Human beings started using light far into the Stone Age, in order to meet immediate needs, and widened its used when ancient civilizations developed. Other practical uses were conceived during the Middle Ages, some of which had a deep impact on social life. Nevertheless, it was after the Scientific Revolution and, to a wider extent, with the Industrial Revolution, that more devices were developed. The advancement of chemistry and electricity provided the ground and the tools for inventing a number of light-related devices, from photography to chemical and electrical lighting technologies. The deeper and broader scientific advancements of the twentieth century, throughout wave and quanta paradigms and the research on the interactions with matter at the sub-atomic level, have provided the knowledge for a much broader exploitation of light in several different fields, leading to the present technological domains of optoelectronics and photoelectronics, including cinema, image processing, lasers, photovoltaic cells, and optical discs. The recent success of fiber optics, white LEDs, and holography, evidence how vastly and deeply the interaction between light and man is still growing
