Palmprint Authentication System Based on Local and Global Feature Fusion Using DOST

    Get PDF
Palmprint is the region between wrist and fingers. In this paper, a palmprint personal identification system is proposed based on the local and global information fusion. The local and global information is critical for the image observation based on the results of the relationship between physical stimuli and perceptions. The local features of the enhanced palmprint are extracted using discrete orthonormal Stockwell transform. The global feature is obtained by reducing the scale of discrete orthonormal Stockwell transform to infinity. The local and global matching distances of the two palmprint images are fused to get the final matching distance of the proposed scheme. The results show that the fusion of local and global features outperforms the existing works on the available three datasets

Phase-only image synthesis using Fast Generalized Fourier Family Transform (FGFT)

The phase components of complex valued transform coefficients retain the edge information of an image. Fast Generalized Fourier Transform (FGFT) is a complex, non-redundant, progressive resolution, globally referenced phase output, time-frequency representation applicable for non-stationary signals. Though the analysis of forward FGFT framework for 1D signal is present in literature, analysis of synthesis (or reverse) FGFT framework is not available for 1D and 2D signals. An Image (2D signal) synthesized using only phase components of FGFT, does not produce edge information. In the process of FGFT, Fourier Transform (FT) phase coefficients gets mingled together, thus the normalization procedure used to retain phase is ineffective to separate FT phase coefficients from FGFT samples. This thesis proposes an algorithm to effectively separate FT phase coefficients from FGFT samples and thus reconstruct image with edge information from phase-only components of FGFT samples. The amount of information present in phase and magnitude of different transforms is measured. The comparison indicates that FT retains most information than others in phase-only image reconstruction and Curvelet Transform (CT) retains most information in magnitude-only image reconstruction compared to other transforms. In contrast, FGFT retains edge information equally in both magnitude and phase components

LabVIEW as Power Disturbances Classification Tools

    Get PDF
Power disturbances monitoring is one of the important aspects on dealing power quality issue in electrical system. The aims of conducting monitoring process are to identify the real culprit which contribute to the Power Quality (PQ) problem. One of the vital steps during monitoring process is the classifying various type of power disturbance. This classification process is very important to give a right direction towards proposing the correct mitigation technique. In order to produce reliable classification technique, the devices which has a flexibility on accommodating the software and hardware part need to be deployed. The software is need for algorithm development such as signal processing, Artificial Intelligent (AI) as well as statistical analysis. On the hardware part, the device’s ability to acquire the electrical parameter within the electrical system operation is very important. The data acquisition based on the voltage and current is essential to be feed in the classification algorithm in software side. On the other hand, the interfacing devices and data acquisition module need to be developed at the hardware side, LabVIEW manage to accommodate both software and hardware need and further development of the LabVIEW for this purpose will be elaborated in this chapter

A natural harmony?: government, business and British interests in Southeast Asia, 1945-1951

    Get PDF
This thesis seeks to illuminate the nature of the British national interest in Southeast Asia (SEA), as defined and pursued by the Attlee government, 1945-1951. The analysis is undertaken by examining the relationship between government and business in the region, identifying areas of consensus and conflict. It is established that the British government intended to do its utmost to aid British firms in SEA to re-establish their businesses after the disruption to production and trade caused by the war, as a means of protecting its own subjects and assets, and also of furthering British political and commercial interests in the region. However, this was at a time when the need to divert resources to reconstruct and support the domestic British economy made the task of assisting business overseas problematic, to the extent that government's ability to provide material support was limited. Whilst such logistical difficulties were real, it can also be said that differences over the level of assistance to business were heightened by ideological division between businessmen, on the one hand, and government officials, on the other. These themes are explored through an analysis of the interactions of British enterprises which had business interests in Siam (Thailand), Indonesia and Malaya, with the British government and the local British authorities in these countries. This examination takes place against the background of a readjustment in Britain's relations with these countries in the aftermath of the war. Given the urgency of reconstruction at home, the Attlee government was lessening Britain's overseas commitments. In SEA the British government firmly believed economic and social betterment to be pivotal to the task of quickly establishing stability and also, later on, in protecting the region from Communist expansionism. Therefore US cooperation was sought as a source of necessary resources, but at the same time the British were bound to protect British based business interests against US competition, not least because of their valuable impact on the value of Sterling. The Attlee administrations' endeavour to obtain US cooperation however often proved to be ineffective because of the US government's reluctance to be involved in this particular part of Asia. In practice, government assistance to and protection of business were not always possible in the aftermath of the war and firms needed to transform themselves to adapt to new times. Despite this, the two worked closely together and the British government often showed a great willingness to provide moral and practical support for British enterprises. In retrospect, this cooperation only worked where the demands of business did not conflict with the interests and policy of government, and under such circumstances, business was seldom satisfied. Those firms that did survive achieved this primarily by implementing their own strategies and some accomplished a great deal throughout the 1950s and beyond

Justice and Poverty as Challenges for the Christian Churches

    Get PDF
Also published in French as: Justice et pauvreté comme défis pour les églises chrétiennes, Globethics.net, 2022, ISBN 978-2-88931-460-7"The goal of this thesis is to investigate the role of Christian churches and the government in the fight against injustice and the eradication of poverty. In the first two Chapters, an overview of the concept of justice is proposed in both the New and Old Testaments, in the light of the challenge for the churches. Chapter three concentrates on an in-depth analysis of the issues surrounding poverty and its causes. The role played by international organisations with regard to the eradication of poverty in developing countries, and especially in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), is questioned, while an analysis of the impact of industrialisation and globalisation on developing countries is carried out. Chapter four discusses the theological concept of poverty. The aim of this discussion is to develop theological ethics that can be applied by the churches in their struggle against poverty. The last Chapters tackeles poverty in DRC: plausible explanations are given for why some people live in extreme poverty and not others.
