#MeTooMA: Multi-Aspect Annotations of Tweets Related to the MeToo Movement

In this paper, we present a dataset containing 9,973 tweets related to the MeToo movement that were manually annotated for five different linguistic aspects: relevance, stance, hate speech, sarcasm, and dialogue acts. We present a detailed account of the data collection and annotation processes. The annotations have a very high inter-annotator agreement (0.79 to 0.93 k-alpha) due to the domain expertise of the annotators and clear annotation instructions. We analyze the data in terms of geographical distribution, label correlations, and keywords. Lastly, we present some potential use cases of this dataset. We expect this dataset would be of great interest to psycholinguists, socio-linguists, and computational linguists to study the discursive space of digitally mobilized social movements on sensitive issues like sexual harassment.Comment: Preprint of paper accepted at ICWSM 202

Critical Behavioral Traits Foster Peer Engagement in Online Mental Health Communities

Online Mental Health Communities (OMHCs), such as Reddit, have witnessed a surge in popularity as go-to platforms for seeking information and support in managing mental health needs. Platforms like Reddit offer immediate interactions with peers, granting users a vital space for seeking mental health assistance. However, the largely unregulated nature of these platforms introduces intricate challenges for both users and society at large. This study explores the factors that drive peer engagement within counseling threads, aiming to enhance our understanding of this critical phenomenon. We introduce BeCOPE, a novel behavior encoded Peer counseling dataset comprising over 10,118 posts and 58,279 comments sourced from 21 mental health-specific subreddits. The dataset is annotated using three major fine-grained behavior labels: (a) intent, (b) criticism, and (c) readability, along with the emotion labels. Our analysis indicates the prominence of ``self-criticism'' as the most prevalent form of criticism expressed by help-seekers, accounting for a significant 43% of interactions. Intriguingly, we observe that individuals who explicitly express their need for help are 18.01% more likely to receive assistance compared to those who present ``surveys'' or engage in ``rants.'' Furthermore, we highlight the pivotal role of well-articulated problem descriptions, showing that superior readability effectively doubles the likelihood of receiving the sought-after support. Our study emphasizes the essential role of OMHCs in offering personalized guidance and unveils behavior-driven engagement patterns

Every year, millions of girls and boys around the world face sexual abuse and exploitation. Sexual violence occurs everywhere - in every country and all segments of society. A kid can experience sexual abuse or exploitation at home, at school, or in the community. Children's safety may also be at risk due to the growing usage of digital technologies. Very often, abuse occurs at the hands of someone a child knows and trusts. Statistically, about one in 10 girls has experienced sexual violence and the actual figure is probably higher, but such abuse often goes unreported. Many negative effects could result from the abuses, including potential infections and STDs in addition to social, psychological, and physical harm. This thesis will analyse the phenomena of “child sexual abuse in the domestic context” and the objective is to understand the role of policies and legislative instruments in regulating and condemning these crimes against human rights. From both a legal-legislative and social perspective, we will examine the various points of intervention and prevention that national and international society has to offer. There will also be a focus on minors living in the UK and the Netherlands who are under the age of 18. The research emphasizes lived experiences, problem management, and prevention from the viewpoints of victims, caregivers, and offenders. The information gathered and determined to be pertinent in both realities will be discussed at the end.Every year, millions of girls and boys around the world face sexual abuse and exploitation. Stigma and discrimination: social encounters, identity and space; a concept derived from HIV and AIDS related research in the high prevalence country Botswana

How do social encounters conjure up stigma and discrimination? How do social identities emerge and how do people reject or integrate each other in local settings and social space? How do individuals affected build their self-identities and cope with the socially divisive effects of their stigma? The book provides an unconventional view on the subject matter. It is based on empirical fieldwork on the social effects of HIV and AIDS in Botswana. A broad review of geographical, sociological, psychological and social psychological literature, as well as the consideration of works of applied sciences helps to lift the empirical findings to a more general and theoretical level. Different lines of theory are disentangled and integrated into a concept of stigma and discrimination. With its standpoint of pragmatist epistemology and the special focus on the spatial character of social distances the book is of interest not only for social geographers. Both stigma and discrimination are socially highly relevant phenomena. They not only induce social segregation in such a manner that people are forced to subordinate themselves. Especially stigmatisation leads people to exclude themselves out of shame. People also refrain from seeking support from relevant services. It is therefore of elementary importance in many social fields (e.g. the public health sector, social work, etc.) to understand the processes of stigma and discrimination. dissertationAutism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a common childhood neurodevelopmental disorder. Epidemiological studies have found a disparity in diagnosis for children from Hispanic and low-income families, as compared to Anglo (White, non-Hispanic) children, who are more likely to be diagnosed earlier. This study considered whether parents‘ discursive ability and resources could be a factor in delayed ASD diagnosis. The purposive sample for this critical linguistic and discursive study included 10 Hispanic parents with a sociolinguistic heritage from Mexico, and 10 Anglo parents with a sociolinguistic heritage from the U.S. The Hispanic sample was less privileged than the Anglo sample, which had higher average levels of income, education, and English speaking skills. The sources of data included digitally transcribed texts from interviews of the 20 participant parents and the texts scraped from nine national ASD websites. Phase 1 of the analysis coded, compared, and critically analyzed accounts of Hispanic and Anglo parents regarding their experience of assessing and obtaining a professional diagnosis of their child‘s behavior. Phase 2 employed critical linguistic/discourse analysis of the scraped texts from ASD websites and subsequent content analysis of those texts regarding the diagnosis and treatment of a child with ASD. The findings from the first phase suggest that Anglo parents focused on constructing themselves as -good parents‖ who met ideological expectations for monitoring and caring for their children. In contrast, most Hispanic parents used their iv discourse and resources to construct themselves as concerned about their children‘s linear progress in school, ability to communicate, and social adaptability. Findings from the second phase of analysis suggest that the same discourse used by privileged parents in this study, on a microlevel, were consistent with the dominant U.S. macrolevel discourse and ideology of the -good parent‖ as emerged from the ASD website data. This study suggests that, the more closely parents, either Hispanic or Anglo, were aligned with the privileged discourse model or ideology of the U.S. Anglo -good parent,‖ the fewer barriers they reported to diagnosis. This study also suggests the need for further research, particularly about the Hispanic/Mexican discursive model of parenting
