Parametric stiffness analysis of the Orthoglide
This paper presents a parametric stiffness analysis of the Orthoglide. A
compliant modeling and a symbolic expression of the stiffness matrix are
conducted. This allows a simple systematic analysis of the influence of the
geometric design parameters and to quickly identify the critical link
parameters. Our symbolic model is used to display the stiffest areas of the
workspace for a specific machining task. Our approach can be applied to any
parallel manipulator for which stiffness is a critical issue
The SwarmItFix Pilot
Abstract The paper presents the integration and experiments with a pilot cell including a traditional machine tool and an innovative robot-swarm cooperative conformable support for aircraft body panels. The pilot was installed and tested in the premises of the aircraft manufacturer Piaggio Aerospace in Italy. An original approach to the support of the panels is realized: robots with soft heads operate from below the panel; they move upward the panel where manufacturing is performed, removing the sagging under gravity and returning it to its nominal geometry; the spindle of amilling machine performs the machining from above
Kinematic Performance Measures and Optimization of Parallel Kinematics Manipulators: A Brief Review
This chapter covers a number of kinematic performance indices that are instrumental in designing parallel kinematics manipulators. These indices can be used selectively based on manipulator requirements and functionality. This would provide the very practical tool for designers to approach their needs in a very comprehensive fashion. Nevertheless, most applications require a more composite set of requirements that makes optimizing performance more challenging. The later part of this chapter will discuss single-objective and multi-objectives optimization that could handle certain performance indices or a combination of them. A brief description of most common techniques in the literature will be provided
Dexterous manipulation of unknown objects using virtual contact points
The manipulation of unknown objects is a problem of special interest in robotics since it is not always possible to have exact models of the objects with which the robot interacts. This paper presents a simple strategy to manipulate unknown objects using a robotic hand equipped with tactile sensors. The hand configurations that allow the rotation of an unknown object are computed using only tactile and kinematic information, obtained during the manipulation process and reasoning about the desired and real positions of the fingertips during the manipulation. This is done taking into account that the desired positions of the fingertips are not physically reachable since they are located in the interior of the manipulated object and therefore they are virtual positions with associated virtual contact points. The proposed approach was satisfactorily validated using three fingers of an anthropomorphic robotic hand (Allegro Hand), with the original fingertips replaced by tactile sensors (WTS-FT). In the experimental validation, several everyday objects with different shapes were successfully manipulated, rotating them without the need of knowing their shape or any other physical property.Peer ReviewedPostprint (author's final draft
Stiffness Analysis of Overconstrained Parallel Manipulators
The paper presents a new stiffness modeling method for overconstrained
parallel manipulators with flexible links and compliant actuating joints. It is
based on a multidimensional lumped-parameter model that replaces the link
flexibility by localized 6-dof virtual springs that describe both
translational/rotational compliance and the coupling between them. In contrast
to other works, the method involves a FEA-based link stiffness evaluation and
employs a new solution strategy of the kinetostatic equations for the unloaded
manipulator configuration, which allows computing the stiffness matrix for the
overconstrained architectures, including singular manipulator postures. The
advantages of the developed technique are confirmed by application examples,
which deal with comparative stiffness analysis of two translational parallel
manipulators of 3-PUU and 3-PRPaR architectures. Accuracy of the proposed
approach was evaluated for a case study, which focuses on stiffness analysis of

Cartesian Stiffness Matrix Mapping of a Translational Parallel Mechanism with Elastic Joints
This paper is devoted to calculating the Cartesian stiffness matrix of a translational parallel manipulator with elastic joints. The calculation takes into account the contribution of the Jacobian variation because of the change of manipulator configuration due to the elasticity and it covers the entire theoretical workspace of the manipulator. Three kineto‐static adimensional indices are proposed to measure the response of the manipulator in terms of stiffness
Parallel Manipulators
In recent years, parallel kinematics mechanisms have attracted a lot of attention from the academic and industrial communities due to potential applications not only as robot manipulators but also as machine tools. Generally, the criteria used to compare the performance of traditional serial robots and parallel robots are the workspace, the ratio between the payload and the robot mass, accuracy, and dynamic behaviour. In addition to the reduced coupling effect between joints, parallel robots bring the benefits of much higher payload-robot mass ratios, superior accuracy and greater stiffness; qualities which lead to better dynamic performance. The main drawback with parallel robots is the relatively small workspace. A great deal of research on parallel robots has been carried out worldwide, and a large number of parallel mechanism systems have been built for various applications, such as remote handling, machine tools, medical robots, simulators, micro-robots, and humanoid robots. This book opens a window to exceptional research and development work on parallel mechanisms contributed by authors from around the world. Through this window the reader can get a good view of current parallel robot research and applications
