    The 9th volume of the series Acarorum Catalogus contains lists of mites of 13 families, 225 genera and 1268 species of the superfamilies Schizoglyphoidea, Histiostomatoidea, Canestrinioidea and Hemisarcoptoidea. Most of these mites live on insects or other animals (as parasites, phoretic or commensals), some inhabit rotten plant material, dung or fungi. Mites of the families Chetochelacaridae and Lophonotacaridae are specialised to live with Myriapods (Diplopoda).     Aesthetic choices: Defining the range of aesthetic views in interactive digital media including games and 3D virtual environments (3D VEs)

    Defining aesthetic choices for interactive digital media such as games is a challenging task. Objective and subjective factors such as colour, symmetry, order and complexity, and statistical features among others play an important role for defining the aesthetic properties of interactive digital artifacts. Computational approaches developed in this regard also consider objective factors such as statistical image features for the assessment of aesthetic qualities. However, aesthetics for interactive digital media, such as games, requires more nuanced consideration than simple objective and subjective factors, for choosing a range of aesthetic features. From the study it was found that the there is no one single optimum position or viewpoint with a corresponding relationship to the aesthetic considerations that influence interactive digital media. Instead, the incorporation of aesthetic features demonstrates the need to consider each component within interactive digital media as part of a range of possible features, and therefore within a range of possible camera positions. A framework, named as PCAWF, emphasized that combination of features and factors demonstrated the need to define a range of aesthetic viewpoints. This is important for improved user experience. From the framework it has been found that factors including the storyline, user state, gameplay, and application type are critical to defining the reasons associated with making aesthetic choices. The selection of a range of aesthetic features and characteristics is influenced by four main factors and sub-factors associated with the main factors. This study informs the future of interactive digital media interaction by providing clarity and reasoning behind the aesthetic decision-making inclusions that are integrated into automatically generated vision by providing a framework for choosing a range of aesthetic viewpoints in a 3D virtual environment of a game. The study identifies critical juxtapositions between photographic and cinema-based media aesthetics by incorporating qualitative rationales from experts within the interactive digital media field. This research will change the way Artificial Intelligence (AI) generated interactive digital media in the way that it chooses visual outputs in terms of camera positions, field-view, orientation, contextual considerations, and user experiences. It will impact across all automated systems to ensure that human-values, rich variations, and extensive complexity are integrated in the AI-dominated development and design of future interactive digital media production

    European population genomic differentiation and dispersal pattern of the invasive beetle Anoplophora glabripennis

    Anthropogenic activities (e.g. homogenized habitats, trade) are the main factors to facilitate the increasing rates of invasive alien species. In this study, the invasion of the Asian long-horned beetle (Anoplophora glabripennis) was examined. Its native distribution is eastern Asia (China, Korean peninsula), but by extensive trade, this beetle was introduced via wood packing materials to North-America (1996) and Europe (2001). ALB attacks healthy broadleaved trees (e.g. Acer spp., Salix spp., Populus spp.), which can become lethal due to larval feeding. This study aims to detect genetic differences and kinship between the European infestation sites in Germany, Switzerland and Italy, from which the introduction and dispersal patterns can be deviated. Therefore, mitochondrial (mt) DNA-markers of the Cytochrome oxidase subunits I and II genes (COI and II) were used (ch. A and B, Sanger sequencing), as well as genome wide single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs), which were obtained by a Genotype-by-sequencing (GBS) approach (ch. C, Illumina sequencing). The results of this population genomic study of invasive European ALB populations showed very complex introduction patterns into Europe including multiple independent introductions characterized by the high population structure between the European infestation sites and some cases of human mediated secondary dispersal.Anthropogene Aktivitäten (z.B. homogenisierte Habitate, Handel) sind die Hauptfaktoren, die ein erhöhtes Vorkommen invasiver Arten begünstigen. Diese Studie untersuchte die Invasion des Asiatischen Laubholzbockkäfers (Anoplophora glabripennis). Sein natürlicher Lebensraum liegt in China und der koreanischen Halbinsel und konnte durch intensiven Handel über Holzverpackungsmaterial nach Nordamerika (1996) und Europa (2001) eingeschleppt werden. ALB befällt gesunde Laubbäume (z.B. Acer spp., Salix spp., Populus spp.) was durch den Larvenfraß oft tödlich enden kann. Ziel dieser Arbeit war es, genetische Unterschiede von Befallsgebieten in Deutschland, der Schweiz und Italien zu finden, um Verwandtschaften und damit Einschleppungs- und Verbreitungswege abzuleiten. Dafür wurden mtDNA-Marker der Cytochromoxidase Untereinheiten I und II (Kap. A und B, Sanger Sequenzierung,) und durch Genotype-by-sequencing (GBS) gewonnene genomweite Einzelnukleotidpolymorphismen (SNPs) verwendet (Kap. C, Illumina Sequenzierung). Die Ergebnisse der populationsgenomischen Untersuchung invasiver ALB Populationen in Europa zeigen sehr komplexe Einschleppungswege, bestehend aus mehreren unabhängigen Einfuhren, die sich durch die starke Populationsstruktur zwischen den europäischen Befallsgebieten auszeichnen, sowie einzelnen Fällen von sekundärer Verbringung durch den Menschen

    Standardization of synthetic biology tools and assembly methods for Saccharomyces cerevisiae and emerging yeast species

    As redesigning organisms using engineering principles is one of the purposes of synthetic biology (SynBio), the standardization of experimental methods and DNA parts is becoming increasingly a necessity. The synthetic biology community focusing on the engineering of Saccharomyces cerevisiae has been in the foreground in this area, conceiving several well-characterized SynBio toolkits widely adopted by the community. In this review, the molecular methods and toolkits developed for S. cerevisiae are discussed in terms of their contributions to the required standardization efforts. In addition, the toolkits designed for emerging nonconventional yeast species including Yarrowia lipolytica, Komagataella phaffii, and Kluyveromyces marxianus are also reviewed. Without a doubt, the characterized DNA parts combined with the standardized assembly strategies highlighted in these toolkits have greatly contributed to the rapid development of many metabolic engineering and diagnostics applications among others. Despite the growing capacity in deploying synthetic biology for common yeast genome engineering works, the yeast community has a long journey to go to exploit it in more sophisticated and delicate applications like bioautomation.ISSN:2161-506

    DNA Computing: Modelling in Formal Languages and Combinatorics on Words, and Complexity Estimation

    DNA computing, an essential area of unconventional computing research, encodes problems using DNA molecules and solves them using biological processes. This thesis contributes to the theoretical research in DNA computing by modelling biological processes as computations and by studying formal language and combinatorics on words concepts motivated by DNA processes. It also contributes to the experimental research in DNA computing by a scaling comparison between DNA computing and other models of computation. First, for theoretical DNA computing research, we propose a new word operation inspired by a DNA wet lab protocol called cross-pairing polymerase chain reaction (XPCR). We define and study a word operation called word blending that models and generalizes an unexpected outcome of XPCR. The input words are uwx and ywv that share a non-empty overlap w, and the output is the word uwv. Closure properties of the Chomsky families of languages under this operation and its iterated version, the existence of a solution to equations involving this operation, and its state complexity are studied. To follow the XPCR experimental requirement closely, a new word operation called conjugate word blending is defined, where the subwords x and y are required to be identical. Closure properties of the Chomsky families of languages under this operation and the XPCR experiments that motivate and implement it are presented. Second, we generalize the sequence of Fibonacci words inspired by biological concepts on DNA. The sequence of Fibonacci words is an infinite sequence of words obtained from two initial letters f(1) = a and f(2)= b, by the recursive definition f(n+2) = f(n+1)*f(n), for all positive integers n, where * denotes word concatenation. After we propose a unified terminology for different types of Fibonacci words and corresponding results in the extensive literature on the topic, we define and explore involutive Fibonacci words motivated by ideas stemming from theoretical studies of DNA computing. The relationship between different involutive Fibonacci words and their borderedness and primitivity are studied. Third, we analyze the practicability of DNA computing experiments since DNA computing and other unconventional computing methods that solve computationally challenging problems often have the limitation that the space of potential solutions grows exponentially with their sizes. For such problems, DNA computing algorithms may achieve a linear time complexity with an exponential space complexity as a trade-off. Using the subset sum problem as the benchmark problem, we present a scaling comparison of the DNA computing (DNA-C) approach with the network biocomputing (NB-C) and the electronic computing (E-C) approaches, where the volume, computing time, and energy required, relative to the input size, are compared. Our analysis shows that E-C uses a tiny volume compared to that required by DNA-C and NB-C, at the cost of the E-C computing time being outperformed first by DNA-C and then by NB-C. In addition, NB-C appears to be more energy efficient than DNA-C for some input sets, and E-C is always an order of magnitude less energy efficient than DNA-C

    The Rise of Metallurgy in Eurasia

    "The Rise of Metallurgy in Eurasia is a landmark study in the origins of metallurgy. The project aimed to trace the invention and innovation of metallurgy in the Balkans. It combined targeted excavations and surveys with extensive scientific analyses at two Neolithic-Chalcolithic copper production and consumption sites, Belovode and Pločnik, in Serbia. At Belovode, the project revealed chronologically and contextually secure evidence for copper smelting in the 49th century BC. This confirms the earlier interpretation of c. 7000-year-old metallurgy at the site, making it the earliest record of fully developed metallurgical activity in the world. However, far from being a rare and elite practice, metallurgy at both Belovode and Pločnik is demonstrated to have been a common and communal craft activity. This monograph reviews the pre-existing scholarship on early metallurgy in the Balkans. It subsequently presents detailed results from the excavations, surveys and scientific analyses conducted at Belovode and Pločnik. These are followed by new and up-to-date regional syntheses by leading specialists on the Neolithic-Chalcolithic material culture, technologies, settlement and subsistence practices in the Central Balkans. Finally, the monograph places the project results in the context of major debates surrounding early metallurgy in Eurasia before proposing a new agenda for global early metallurgy studies.
