Organisations need to be continually aware of changes in the market if they
wish to continue to fulfil customer expectations. Influencing factors such as
industrialisation and the change from craftsmanship based operations to large
mass producing companies had an impact on how plants organised their
processes as did the perception of employees in terms of their significance in
the firm.
The changes in the market during the 1950s led to the consumers suddenly
finding themselves in a favourable position and their desires and wishes were
transmitted to this market by means of their purchasing patterns. Only those
companies that satisfied these desires and wishes were ultimately successful.
The ability to be able to differentiate oneself from the competition had become
vital. One example in this respect was to position oneself as the market leader
from the quality perspective.
Debating of the relationship between quality management and cost started and
developed into the broader discussion of “Quality” as a concept. In making the
decision to introduce a quality management culture the intention of an
organisation was to also stimulate a change in the mentality of its workforce. In
raising awareness of the significance of quality amongst their employees
management was actually subconsciously uniting everyone under their
company’s culture.
Globalisation of markets placed additional burdens upon the strategies of
companies and the resultant stress on flexibility and increased productivity
resulted in a shift in the focus of industrial concerns. This led to, amongst other
things, opportunities for quality and process improvement systems such as
Total Quality Management, Lean and Six Sigma to flourish. With such
improvement systems the involvement and engagement of employees in the
decision making processes has become both fundamental and essential.

Due to these aspects enterprises began to turn away from the Tayloristic
approaches and hopefully start with a human production concept in the third
millennium.
In this study the question of how large scale operation evolved will be
investigated and the individual development steps of quality management
systems will be demonstrated. Further consideration will be given to the process
improvement systems Lean and Six Sigma from the 1990s onwards together
with their integration into the existing quality systems of the time.
The principles behind the decisions companies make in launching quality and
process improvement systems will also be explained. In examining the case
study of DuPont Performance Coatings Austria, the largest Austrian paint
manufacturer, the impact of change will be shown and the question of whether
or not a humanisation of production systems has actually occurred will be
answered
New challenges such as the increasing pressure to innovate and the growth of individual requirements from customers as well as the increasing internationalization lead to a radical change in the automotive industry. This and further aspects cause an increase of vehicle manufacturing and of the production system complexity. Within the automotive industry, the intralogistics is important. Based on the complexity of the automotive industry, intralogistics also faces certain challenges. To counteract the increasing complexity, an innovative tool to support the intralogistics planning is essential. The usage of innovative human-machine interfaces as mobile assistance systems with augmented reality can be a possibility within intralogistics planning. The existing literature already contains many publications on Augmented Reality in general. Looking into the logistics domain, Augmented Reality is already quite frequently used for supporting operational logistics tasks, such as Augmented Reality-supported order picking. Whereas in the field of logistics planning, no comprehensive applications in terms of a mobile assistance system with augmented reality within a production hall can be identified. Based on this, this book presents a use case and prototypes for an augmented reality-based intralogistics planning within the automotive industry. The focus is the creation of a mobile assistance system supporting end-to-end augmented reality-based intralogistics planning in the assembly of the automotive industry. In order to design the use case, a systematic literature analysis is carried out and existing intralogistics planning processes are analyzed with the aim of defining the relevant planning processes for the use of the mobile assistance system. Two prototypes are implemented based on functional and non-functional requirements. The prototype implementation is based on a SLAM-based as well as a hybrid tracking approach. Furthermore, a field experiment is conducted for the validation of the prototypes. Finally, the Technology Acceptance Model is empirically evaluated to determine the acceptance of augmented reality with regard to intralogistics planning
From the very beginning the automotive industry has been in a constant state of flux. Nowadays one of the mega trends is pointing towards electro mobility. To tackle this issue and to be more competitive, the automotive industry is forced to install a portfolio of electric vehicles beside the existing combustion engine vehicles. In industrial perspective, this leads to an increasing number of derivatives. The complexity hyped in development, boundary conditions and requirements (e.g. E-Drive, battery alignment etc.). The number of vehicles get into the series production at the same time increased. If consideration is taken for shortening the development time, current methods of product development has to be re-examined. One possible solution is a deeper interlinkage of the product development disciplines. Disciplines like dimensional management have a key role in that. By means of this research, a concept developed for the optimization of vehicle structure using tolerance analysis. Deficits are derived based on an analysis of product- and process development as well as optimization in context of dimensional management. In today’s context, identified deficits in data, methods, process as well as software. This causes problems in the dimensional management discipline. The synthesis part in this research is to solve stepwise the above mentioned deficits. Special attention made on deficits in the area of information provision and development methods. The research completed with concept implementation in software phase, as well as method validation using realistic (body-in-white) development data
