    Human kind is exposed to large amounts of data. According to statistics, more than 80% of information received by humans comes from the visual system. Therefore, image information processing is not only an important research topic but also a challenging task. The unique information processing mechanism of the human visual system provides it with fast, accurate, and efficient image processing capabilities. At present, many advanced image analysis and processing techniques have been widely used in image communication, geographic information systems, medical image analysis, and virtual reality. However, there is still a large gap between these technologies and the human visual system. Therefore, building an image system research mechanism based on the biological vision system is an attractive but difficult target. Although it is a challenge, it can also be considered as an opportunity which utilizes biologically inspired ideas. Meanwhile, through the integration of neural biology, biological perception mechanisms, and computer science and mathematical science, related research can bridge biological vision and computer vision. Finally, the biologically inspired image analysis and processing system is expected to be built on the basis of further consideration of the learning mechanism of the human brain

    Visualization techniques to aid in the analysis of multi-spectral astrophysical data sets

    The goal of this project was to support the scientific analysis of multi-spectral astrophysical data by means of scientific visualization. Scientific visualization offers its greatest value if it is not used as a method separate or alternative to other data analysis methods but rather in addition to these methods. Together with quantitative analysis of data, such as offered by statistical analysis, image or signal processing, visualization attempts to explore all information inherent in astrophysical data in the most effective way. Data visualization is one aspect of data analysis. Our taxonomy as developed in Section 2 includes identification and access to existing information, preprocessing and quantitative analysis of data, visual representation and the user interface as major components to the software environment of astrophysical data analysis. In pursuing our goal to provide methods and tools for scientific visualization of multi-spectral astrophysical data, we therefore looked at scientific data analysis as one whole process, adding visualization tools to an already existing environment and integrating the various components that define a scientific data analysis environment. As long as the software development process of each component is separate from all other components, users of data analysis software are constantly interrupted in their scientific work in order to convert from one data format to another, or to move from one storage medium to another, or to switch from one user interface to another. We also took an in-depth look at scientific visualization and its underlying concepts, current visualization systems, their contributions, and their shortcomings. The role of data visualization is to stimulate mental processes different from quantitative data analysis, such as the perception of spatial relationships or the discovery of patterns or anomalies while browsing through large data sets. Visualization often leads to an intuitive understanding of the meaning of data values and their relationships by sacrificing accuracy in interpreting the data values. In order to be accurate in the interpretation, data values need to be measured, computed on, and compared to theoretical or empirical models (quantitative analysis). If visualization software hampers quantitative analysis (which happens with some commercial visualization products), its use is greatly diminished for astrophysical data analysis. The software system STAR (Scientific Toolkit for Astrophysical Research) was developed as a prototype during the course of the project to better understand the pragmatic concerns raised in the project. STAR led to a better understanding on the importance of collaboration between astrophysicists and computer scientists

    Augmented Reality (AR) is a natural development from virtual reality (VR), which was developed several decades earlier. AR complements VR in many ways. Due to the advantages of the user being able to see both the real and virtual objects simultaneously, AR is far more intuitive, but it's not completely detached from human factors and other restrictions. AR doesn't consume as much time and effort in the applications because it's not required to construct the entire virtual scene and the environment. In this book, several new and emerging application areas of AR are presented and divided into three sections. The first section contains applications in outdoor and mobile AR, such as construction, restoration, security and surveillance. The second section deals with AR in medical, biological, and human bodies. The third and final section contains a number of new and useful applications in daily living and learning

    Error resilient stereoscopic video streaming using model-based fountain codes

One of the most recent advances in video coding is observed on multi-view video coding which suggests methods for the compression of correlated multiple image sequences. The existing multi-view compression techniques increase the loss sensitivity and necessitate the use of efficient loss recovery schemes. Forward Error Correction (FEC) is an efficient, powerful and practical tool for the recovery of lost data. A novel class of FEC codes is Fountain codes which are suitable to be used with recent video codecs, such as H.264/AVC, and LT and Raptor codes are practical examples of this class. Although there are many studies on monoscopic video, transmission of multi-view video through lossy channels with FEC have not been explored yet. Aiming at this deficiency, an H.264-based multi-view video codec and a model-based Fountain code are combined to generate an effi- cient error resilient stereoscopic streaming system. Three layers of stereoscopic video with unequal importance are defined in order to exploit the benefits of Unequal Error Protection (UEP) with FEC. Simply, these layers correspond to intra frames of left view, predicted frames of left view and predicted frames of right view. The Rate-Distortion (RD) characteristics of these dependent layers are de- fined by extending the RD characteristics of monoscopic video. The parameters of the models are obtained with curve fitting using the RD samples of the video, and satisfactory results are achieved where the average difference between the analytical models and RD samples is between 1.00% and 9.19%. An heuristic analytical model of the performance of Raptor codes is used to obtain the residual number of lost packets for given channel bit rate, loss rate, and protection rate. This residual number is multiplied with the estimated average distortion of the loss of a single Network Abstraction Layer (NAL) unit to obtain the total transmission distortion. All these models are combined to minimize the end-toend distortion and obtain optimal encoder bit rates and UEP rates. When the proposed system is used, the simulation results demonstrate up to 2dB increase in quality compared to equal error protection and only left view error protection. Furthermore, Fountain codes are analyzed in the finite length region, and iterative performance models are derived without any assumptions or asymptotical approximations. The performance model of the belief-propagation (BP) decoder approximates either the behavior of a single simulation results or their average depending on the parameters of the LT code. The performance model of the maximum likelihood decoder approximates the average of simulation results more accurately compared to the model of the BP decoder. Raptor codes are modeled heuristically based on the exponential decay observed on the simulation results, and the model parameters are obtained by line of best fit. The analytical models of systematic and non-systematic Raptor codes accurately approximate the experimental average performance.Tan, A SerdarPh.D

Möjligheten att se på 3D-video på nätet kom år 2011, men stödet för produktpaketen är fortfarande dåligt och informationen om hur man skapar 3D webbmaterial är svår att hitta. Syftet är att utreda hur man kan producera 3D material som går att se på webben, och målet är att skapa en webbsida med några 3D testklipp. Arbetet skall hjälpa potentiella producenter att skapa 3D material. Arbetet går igenom teorin bakom 3D materialproduktion och ger den praktiska kunskapen som behövs för att producera det. Det forskas i hurdant material som lämpar sig för att återges i 3D på webben. Arbetet baserar sig på informationssökning på nätet, filmning och fotografering, webbprogrammering, och empirisk forskning.Nvidia 3D Vision and Nvidia 3D Vision 2 are two products that enable viewing of 3D content on computers. This study is based on these products. Viewing 3D video online was made possible in 2011, but the support available today is lacking and information about how to create 3D content is scarce. The aim of this study is to research ways to produce 3D content that is viewable online, and the goal is to create a website with some of the produced 3D content. This thesis work is supposed to help potential producers create 3D content. This study covers the theory of 3D content production, and offers the practical knowledge needed to produce this. The research revolves around content that can be displayed and viewed using a web browser. The study is based on online research, film and photography, web programming and empirical studies
