    Stereoscopic video chroma key processing using NVIDIA CUDA

    In this paper, I use the NVIDIA CUDA technology to perform the chroma key algorithm on stereoscopic images. NVIDIA CUDA allows to process parallel algorithms on GPU. Input data are stereoscopic images with the monochromatic background and the destination background image. Output data is the combination of inputs by using the chroma key. I compare the algorithm efficiency between the GPU and CPU execution

    Enhancing a Neurosurgical Imaging System with a PC-based Video Processing Solution

    This work presents a PC-based prototype video processing application developed to be used with a specific neurosurgical imaging device, the OPMI® PenteroTM operating microscope, in the Department of Neurosurgery of Helsinki University Central Hospital at Töölö, Helsinki. The motivation for implementing the software was the lack of some clinically important features in the imaging system provided by the microscope. The imaging system is used as an online diagnostic aid during surgery. The microscope has two internal video cameras; one for regular white light imaging and one for near-infrared fluorescence imaging, used for indocyanine green videoangiography. The footage of the microscope’s current imaging mode is accessed via the composite auxiliary output of the device. The microscope also has an external high resolution white light video camera, accessed via a composite output of a separate video hub. The PC was chosen as the video processing platform for its unparalleled combination of prototyping and high-throughput video processing capabilities. A thorough analysis of the platform and efficient video processing methods was conducted in the thesis and the results were used in the design of the imaging station. The features found feasible during the project were incorporated into a video processing application running on a GNU/Linux distribution Ubuntu. The clinical usefulness of the implemented features was ensured beforehand by consulting the neurosurgeons using the original system. The most significant shortcomings of the original imaging system were mended in this work. The key features of the developed application include: live streaming, simultaneous streaming and recording, and playing back of upto two video streams. The playback mode provides full media player controls, with a frame-by-frame precision rewinding, in an intuitive and responsive interface. A single view and a side-by-side comparison mode are provided for the streams.     Synchronized Illumination Modulation for Digital Video Compositing

    Informationsaustausch ist eines der Grundbedürfnisse der Menschen. Während früher dazu Wandmalereien,Handschrift, Buchdruck und Malerei eingesetzt wurden, begann man später, Bildfolgen zu erstellen, die als sogenanntes ”Daumenkino” den Eindruck einer Animation vermitteln. Diese wurden schnell durch den Einsatz rotierender Bildscheiben, auf denen mit Hilfe von Schlitzblenden, Spiegeln oder Optiken eine Animation sichtbar wurde, automatisiert – mit sogenannten Phenakistiskopen,Zoetropen oder Praxinoskopen. Mit der Erfindung der Fotografie begannen in der zweiten Hälfte des 19. Jahrhunderts die ersten Wissenschaftler wie Eadweard Muybridge, Etienne-Jules Marey und Ottomar Anschütz, Serienbildaufnahmen zu erstellen und diese dann in schneller Abfolge, als Film, abzuspielen. Mit dem Beginn der Filmproduktion wurden auch die ersten Versuche unternommen, mit Hilfe dieser neuen Technik spezielle visuelle Effekte zu generieren, um damit die Immersion der Bewegtbildproduktionen weiter zu erhöhen. Während diese Effekte in der analogen Phase der Filmproduktion bis in die achtziger Jahre des 20.Jahrhunderts recht beschränkt und sehr aufwendig mit einem enormen manuellen Arbeitsaufwand erzeugt werden mussten, gewannen sie mit der sich rapide beschleunigenden Entwicklung der Halbleitertechnologie und der daraus resultierenden vereinfachten digitalen Bearbeitung immer mehr an Bedeutung. Die enormen Möglichkeiten, die mit der verlustlosen Nachbearbeitung in Kombination mit fotorealistischen, dreidimensionalen Renderings entstanden, führten dazu, dass nahezu alle heute produzierten Filme eine Vielfalt an digitalen Videokompositionseffekten beinhalten. ...Besides home entertainment and business presentations, video projectors are powerful tools for modulating images spatially as well as temporally. The re-evolving need for stereoscopic displays increases the demand for low-latency projectors and recent advances in LED technology also offer high modulation frequencies. Combining such high-frequency illumination modules with synchronized, fast cameras, makes it possible to develop specialized high-speed illumination systems for visual effects production. In this thesis we present different systems for using spatially as well as temporally modulated illumination in combination with a synchronized camera to simplify the requirements of standard digital video composition techniques for film and television productions and to offer new possibilities for visual effects generation. After an overview of the basic terminology and a summary of related methods, we discuss and give examples of how modulated light can be applied to a scene recording context to enable a variety of effects which cannot be realized using standard methods, such as virtual studio technology or chroma keying. We propose using high-frequency, synchronized illumination which, in addition to providing illumination, is modulated in terms of intensity and wavelength to encode technical information for visual effects generation. This is carried out in such a way that the technical components do not influence the final composite and are also not visible to observers on the film set. Using this approach we present a real-time flash keying system for the generation of perspectively correct augmented composites by projecting imperceptible markers for optical camera tracking. Furthermore, we present a system which enables the generation of various digital video compositing effects outside of completely controlled studio environments, such as virtual studios. A third temporal keying system is presented that aims to overcome the constraints of traditional chroma keying in terms of color spill and color dependency. ..

    Towards a real-time 3D object recognition pipeline on mobile GPGPU computing platforms using low-cost RGB-D sensors

    In this project, we propose the implementation of a 3D object recognition system which will be optimized to operate under demanding time constraints. The system must be robust so that objects can be recognized properly in poor light conditions and cluttered scenes with significant levels of occlusion. An important requirement must be met: the system must exhibit a reasonable performance running on a low power consumption mobile GPU computing platform (NVIDIA Jetson TK1) so that it can be integrated in mobile robotics systems, ambient intelligence or ambient assisted living applications. The acquisition system is based on the use of color and depth (RGB-D) data streams provided by low-cost 3D sensors like Microsoft Kinect or PrimeSense Carmine. The range of algorithms and applications to be implemented and integrated will be quite broad, ranging from the acquisition, outlier removal or filtering of the input data and the segmentation or characterization of regions of interest in the scene to the very object recognition and pose estimation. Furthermore, in order to validate the proposed system, we will create a 3D object dataset. It will be composed by a set of 3D models, reconstructed from common household objects, as well as a handful of test scenes in which those objects appear. The scenes will be characterized by different levels of occlusion, diverse distances from the elements to the sensor and variations on the pose of the target objects. The creation of this dataset implies the additional development of 3D data acquisition and 3D object reconstruction applications. The resulting system has many possible applications, ranging from mobile robot navigation and semantic scene labeling to human-computer interaction (HCI) systems based on visual information

    Towards Real-time Mixed Reality Matting In Natural Scenes

    In Mixed Reality scenarios, background replacement is a common way to immerse a user in a synthetic environment. Properly identifying the background pixels in an image or video is a dif- ficult problem known as matting. Proper alpha mattes usually come from human guidance, special hardware setups, or color dependent algorithms. This is a consequence of the under-constrained nature of the per pixel alpha blending equation. In constant color matting, research identifies and replaces a background that is a single color, known as the chroma key color. Unfortunately, the algorithms force a controlled physical environment and favor constant, uniform lighting. More generic approaches, such as natural image matting, have made progress finding alpha matte solutions in environments with naturally occurring backgrounds. However, even for the quicker algorithms, the generation of trimaps, indicating regions of known foreground and background pixels, normally requires human interaction or offline computation. This research addresses ways to automatically solve an alpha matte for an image in realtime, and by extension a video, using a consumer level GPU. It does so even in the context of noisy environments that result in less reliable constraints than found in controlled settings. To attack these challenges, we are particularly interested in automatically generating trimaps from depth buffers for dynamic scenes so that algorithms requiring more dense constraints may be used. The resulting computation is parallelizable so that it may run on a GPU and should work for natural images as well as chroma key backgrounds. Extra input may be required, but when this occurs, commodity hardware available in most Mixed Reality setups should be able to provide the input. This allows us to provide real-time alpha mattes for Mixed Reality scenarios that take place in relatively controlled environments. As a consequence, while monochromatic backdrops (such as green screens or retro-reflective material) aid the algorithm’s accuracy, they are not an explicit requirement. iii Finally we explore a sub-image based approach to parallelize an existing hierarchical approach on high resolution imagery. We show that locality can be exploited to significantly reduce the memory and compute requirements of previously necessary when computing alpha mattes of high resolution images. We achieve this using a parallelizable scheme that is both independent of the matting algorithm and image features. Combined, these research topics provide a basis for Mixed Reality scenarios using real-time natural image matting on high definition video sources

    Cenografia virtual enquanto tecnologia e o seu desenvolvimento e adaptação ao meio televisivo

    Tese de Mestrado em Design de ProdutoO Cenário Virtual surge como uma realidade quotidiana do telespectador aplicada pela maioria das cadeias televisivas. Esta circunstância veio incrementar o desenvolvimento da cenografia televisiva e a forma como os conteúdos programáticos devem ser explorados e apresentados neste meio de comunicação. Considerando as investigações em curso, a nível nacional e internacional, procurou identificar-se que medidas estão a ser aplicadas na exploração das potencialidades criativas proporcionadas pela utilização da Realidade Aumentada neste meio, em especial na Cenografia Virtual Metodologicamente, numa primeira fase, efectuamos o levantamento da informação apoiando-nos em estudos científicos e nas tecnologias actualmente aplicadas na produção audiovisual. Posteriormente, recorremos a contactos directos com profissionais do ramo e à avaliação in loco de diferentes estudos de casos e dos diferentes modi operandi, compararando as principais práticas utilizadas ao nível conceptual do modelo tridimensional da Cenografia Virtual e confrontando ferramentas e tecnologias disponíveis com as dificuldades encontradas na sua utilização. Como resultado foi possível identificar que contributos melhor se adequam à exploração e à implementação das potencialidades criativas proporcionadas por esta tecnologia no meio televisivo. De igual forma, foi possível reunir um conjunto de novas linhas metodológicas na abordagem projectual para o designer de cenografia virtual integrado numa estação televisiva.Virtual Scenography has become a reality for the media consumer, currently used by the major television networks. This new reality has triggered the development of television scenography and the way media content should be presented. Considering the current research, at a national and international level, we have attempted to identify the endeavors that are being taken to explore the creative oportunity brought by Augmented Reality to the audio-visual media, particularly, by Virtual Scenography. Methodologically, the first stage was based on a survey of scientific studies and technologies currently used on television productions. On a second stage we interviewed key professional figures and have come into direct contact with different case studies and modi operandi. This way, we were able to compare the main instruments and practices employed on 3D modeling for Virtual Scenography, evaluating the challenges found with the performance of the available tools and technologies. As a result, it became possible to identify which contributions were most appropriate to the development and implementation of the creative process supported by this technology in the television medium. Also, it became possible to develop a set of new methods and project practices for the virtual set designer in a television network

    This major component of the research described in this thesis is 3D computer graphics, specifically the realistic physics-based softbody simulation and haptic responsive environments. Minor components include advanced human-computer interaction environments, non-linear documentary storytelling, and theatre performance. The journey of this research has been unusual because it requires a researcher with solid knowledge and background in multiple disciplines; who also has to be creative and sensitive in order to combine the possible areas into a new research direction. [...] It focuses on the advanced computer graphics and emerges from experimental cinematic works and theatrical artistic practices. Some development content and installations are completed to prove and evaluate the described concepts and to be convincing. [...] To summarize, the resulting work involves not only artistic creativity, but solving or combining technological hurdles in motion tracking, pattern recognition, force feedback control, etc., with the available documentary footage on film, video, or images, and text via a variety of devices [....] and programming, and installing all the needed interfaces such that it all works in real-time. Thus, the contribution to the knowledge advancement is in solving these interfacing problems and the real-time aspects of the interaction that have uses in film industry, fashion industry, new age interactive theatre, computer games, and web-based technologies and services for entertainment and education. It also includes building up on this experience to integrate Kinect- and haptic-based interaction, artistic scenery rendering, and other forms of control.     An interest point based illumination condition matching approach to photometric registration within augmented reality worlds

    With recent and continued increases in computing power, and advances in the field of computer graphics, realistic augmented reality environments can now offer inexpensive and powerful solutions in a whole range of training, simulation and leisure applications. One key challenge to maintaining convincing augmentation, and therefore user immersion, is ensuring consistent illumination conditions between virtual and real environments, so that objects appear to be lit by the same light sources. This research demonstrates how real world lighting conditions can be determined from the two-dimensional view of the user. Virtual objects can then be illuminated and virtual shadows cast using these conditions. This new technique uses pairs of interest points from real objects and the shadows that they cast, viewed from a binocular perspective, to determine the position of the illuminant. This research has been initially focused on single point light sources in order to show the potential of the technique and has investigated the relationships between the many parameters of the vision system. Optimal conditions have been discovered by mapping the results of experimentally varying parameters such as FoV, camera angle and pose, image resolution, aspect ratio and illuminant distance. The technique is able to provide increased robustness where greater resolution imagery is used. Under optimal conditions it is possible to derive the position of a real world light source with low average error. An investigation of available literature has revealed that other techniques can be inflexible, slow, or disrupt scene realism. This technique is able to locate and track a moving illuminant within an unconstrained, dynamic world without the use of artificial calibration objects that would disrupt scene realism. The technique operates in real-time as the new algorithms are of low computational complexity. This allows high framerates to be maintained within augmented reality applications. Illuminant updates occur several times a second on an average to high end desktop computer. Future work will investigate the automatic identification and selection of pairs of interest points and the exploration of global illuminant conditions.
