    Steganalysis of meshes based on 3D wavelet multiresolution analysis

    3D steganalysis aims to find the information hidden in 3D models and graphical objects. It is assumed that the information was hidden by 3D steganography or watermarking algorithms. A new set of 3D steganalysis features, derived by using multiresolution 3D wavelet analysis, is proposed in this research study. 3D wavelets relate a given mesh representation with its lower and higher graph resolutions by means of a set of Wavelet Coefficient Vectors (WCVs). The 3D steganalysis features are derived from transformations between a given mesh and its corresponding higher and lower resolutions. They correspond to geometric measures such as ratios and angles between various geometric measures. These features are shown to significantly increase the steganalysis accuracy when detecting watermarks which have been embedded by 3D wavelet-based watermarking algorithms. The proposed features, when used in combination with a previously proposed feature set, is shown to provide the best results in detecting the hidden information embedded by other information hiding algorithms

    Information Analysis for Steganography and Steganalysis in 3D Polygonal Meshes

    Information hiding, which embeds a watermark/message over a cover signal, has recently found extensive applications in, for example, copyright protection, content authentication and covert communication. It has been widely considered as an appealing technology to complement conventional cryptographic processes in the field of multimedia security by embedding information into the signal being protected. Generally, information hiding can be classified into two categories: steganography and watermarking. While steganography attempts to embed as much information as possible into a cover signal, watermarking tries to emphasize the robustness of the embedded information at the expense of embedding capacity. In contrast to information hiding, steganalysis aims at detecting whether a given medium has hidden message in it, and, if possible, recover that hidden message. It can be used to measure the security performance of information hiding techniques, meaning a steganalysis resistant steganographic/watermarking method should be imperceptible not only to Human Vision Systems (HVS), but also to intelligent analysis. As yet, 3D information hiding and steganalysis has received relatively less attention compared to image information hiding, despite the proliferation of 3D computer graphics models which are fairly promising information carriers. This thesis focuses on this relatively neglected research area and has the following primary objectives: 1) to investigate the trade-off between embedding capacity and distortion by considering the correlation between spatial and normal/curvature noise in triangle meshes; 2) to design satisfactory 3D steganographic algorithms, taking into account this trade-off; 3) to design robust 3D watermarking algorithms; 4) to propose a steganalysis framework for detecting the existence of the hidden information in 3D models and introduce a universal 3D steganalytic method under this framework. %and demonstrate the performance of the proposed steganalysis by testing it against six well-known 3D steganographic/watermarking methods. The thesis is organized as follows. Chapter 1 describes in detail the background relating to information hiding and steganalysis, as well as the research problems this thesis will be studying. Chapter 2 conducts a survey on the previous information hiding techniques for digital images, 3D models and other medium and also on image steganalysis algorithms. Motivated by the observation that the knowledge of the spatial accuracy of the mesh vertices does not easily translate into information related to the accuracy of other visually important mesh attributes such as normals, Chapters 3 and 4 investigate the impact of modifying vertex coordinates of 3D triangle models on the mesh normals. Chapter 3 presents the results of an empirical investigation, whereas Chapter 4 presents the results of a theoretical study. Based on these results, a high-capacity 3D steganographic algorithm capable of controlling embedding distortion is also presented in Chapter 4. In addition to normal information, several mesh interrogation, processing and rendering algorithms make direct or indirect use of curvature information. Motivated by this, Chapter 5 studies the relation between Discrete Gaussian Curvature (DGC) degradation and vertex coordinate modifications. Chapter 6 proposes a robust watermarking algorithm for 3D polygonal models, based on modifying the histogram of the distances from the model vertices to a point in 3D space. That point is determined by applying Principal Component Analysis (PCA) to the cover model. The use of PCA makes the watermarking method robust against common 3D operations, such as rotation, translation and vertex reordering. In addition, Chapter 6 develops a 3D specific steganalytic algorithm to detect the existence of the hidden messages embedded by one well-known watermarking method. By contrast, the focus of Chapter 7 will be on developing a 3D watermarking algorithm that is resistant to mesh editing or deformation attacks that change the global shape of the mesh. By adopting a framework which has been successfully developed for image steganalysis, Chapter 8 designs a 3D steganalysis method to detect the existence of messages hidden in 3D models with existing steganographic and watermarking algorithms. The efficiency of this steganalytic algorithm has been evaluated on five state-of-the-art 3D watermarking/steganographic methods. Moreover, being a universal steganalytic algorithm can be used as a benchmark for measuring the anti-steganalysis performance of other existing and most importantly future watermarking/steganographic algorithms. Chapter 9 concludes this thesis and also suggests some potential directions for future work

    Steganalytic Methods for 3D Objects

    This PhD thesis provides new research results in the area of using 3D features for steganalysis. The research study presented in the thesis proposes new sets of 3D features, greatly extending the previously proposed features. The proposed steganlytic feature set includes features representing the vertex normal, curvature ratio, Gaussian curvature, the edge and vertex position of the 3D objects in the spherical coordinate system. Through a second contribution, this thesis presents a 3D wavelet multiresolution analysis-based steganalytic method. The proposed method extracts the 3D steganalytic features from meshes of different resolutions. The third contribution proposes a robustness and relevance-based feature selection method for solving the cover-source mismatch problem in 3D steganalysis. This method selects those 3D features that are robust to the variation of the cover source, while preserving the relevance of such features to the class label. All the proposed methods are applied for identifying stego-meshes produced by several steganographic algorithms

    A steganalytic algorithm for 3D polygonal meshes

    We propose a steganalytic algorithm for watermarks embedded by Cho et al.'s mean-based algorithm [1]. The main observation is that while in a clean model the means of Cho et al.'s normalized histogram bins are expected to follow a Gaussian distribution, in a marked model their distribution will be bimodal. The proposed algorithm estimates the number of bins through an exhaustive search and then the presence of a watermark is decided by a tailor made normality test. We also propose a modification of Cho et al.'s algorithm which is more resistant to the steganalytic attack and offers an improved robustness/capacity trade-off

    Persistent Homology Tools for Image Analysis

    Topological Data Analysis (TDA) is a new field of mathematics emerged rapidly since the first decade of the century from various works of algebraic topology and geometry. The goal of TDA and its main tool of persistent homology (PH) is to provide topological insight into complex and high dimensional datasets. We take this premise onboard to get more topological insight from digital image analysis and quantify tiny low-level distortion that are undetectable except possibly by highly trained persons. Such image distortion could be caused intentionally (e.g. by morphing and steganography) or naturally in abnormal human tissue/organ scan images as a result of onset of cancer or other diseases. The main objective of this thesis is to design new image analysis tools based on persistent homological invariants representing simplicial complexes on sets of pixel landmarks over a sequence of distance resolutions. We first start by proposing innovative automatic techniques to select image pixel landmarks to build a variety of simplicial topologies from a single image. Effectiveness of each image landmark selection demonstrated by testing on different image tampering problems such as morphed face detection, steganalysis and breast tumour detection. Vietoris-Rips simplicial complexes constructed based on the image landmarks at an increasing distance threshold and topological (homological) features computed at each threshold and summarized in a form known as persistent barcodes. We vectorise the space of persistent barcodes using a technique known as persistent binning where we demonstrated the strength of it for various image analysis purposes. Different machine learning approaches are adopted to develop automatic detection of tiny texture distortion in many image analysis applications. Homological invariants used in this thesis are the 0 and 1 dimensional Betti numbers. We developed an innovative approach to design persistent homology (PH) based algorithms for automatic detection of the above described types of image distortion. In particular, we developed the first PH-detector of morphing attacks on passport face biometric images. We shall demonstrate significant accuracy of 2 such morph detection algorithms with 4 types of automatically extracted image landmarks: Local Binary patterns (LBP), 8-neighbour super-pixels (8NSP), Radial-LBP (R-LBP) and centre-symmetric LBP (CS-LBP). Using any of these techniques yields several persistent barcodes that summarise persistent topological features that help gaining insights into complex hidden structures not amenable by other image analysis methods. We shall also demonstrate significant success of a similarly developed PH-based universal steganalysis tool capable for the detection of secret messages hidden inside digital images. We also argue through a pilot study that building PH records from digital images can differentiate breast malignant tumours from benign tumours using digital mammographic images. The research presented in this thesis creates new opportunities to build real applications based on TDA and demonstrate many research challenges in a variety of image processing/analysis tasks. For example, we describe a TDA-based exemplar image inpainting technique (TEBI), superior to existing exemplar algorithm, for the reconstruction of missing image regions

Classical signal processing techniques have largely worked with mathematical models that are linear, local, stationary, and Gaussian. They have always favored closed-form tractability over real-world accuracy. These constraints were imposed by the lack of powerful computing tools. During the last few decades, signal processing theories, developments, and applications have matured rapidly and now include tools from many areas of mathematics, computer science, physics, and engineering. This book is targeted primarily toward both students and researchers who want to be exposed to a wide variety of signal processing techniques and algorithms. It includes 27 chapters that can be categorized into five different areas depending on the application at hand. These five categories are ordered to address image processing, speech processing, communication systems, time-series analysis, and educational packages respectively. The book has the advantage of providing a collection of applications that are completely independent and self-contained; thus, the interested reader can choose any chapter and skip to another without losing continuity

    Robust density modelling using the student's t-distribution for human action recognition

    The extraction of human features from videos is often inaccurate and prone to outliers. Such outliers can severely affect density modelling when the Gaussian distribution is used as the model since it is highly sensitive to outliers. The Gaussian distribution is also often used as base component of graphical models for recognising human actions in the videos (hidden Markov model and others) and the presence of outliers can significantly affect the recognition accuracy. In contrast, the Student's t-distribution is more robust to outliers and can be exploited to improve the recognition rate in the presence of abnormal data. In this paper, we present an HMM which uses mixtures of t-distributions as observation probabilities and show how experiments over two well-known datasets (Weizmann, MuHAVi) reported a remarkable improvement in classification accuracy. © 2011 IEEE

    Nouvelles méthodes de synchronisation de nuages de points 3D pour l'insertion de données cachées

    This thesis addresses issues relating to the protection of 3D object meshes. For instance, these objects can be created using CAD tool developed by the company STRATEGIES. In an industrial context, 3D meshes creators need to have tools in order to verify meshes integrity, or check permission for 3D printing for example.In this context we study data hiding on 3D meshes. This approach allows us to insert information in a secure and imperceptible way in a mesh. This may be an identifier, a meta-information or a third-party content, for instance, in order to transmit secretly a texture. Data hiding can address these problems by adjusting the trade-off between capacity, imperceptibility and robustness. Generally, data hiding methods consist of two stages, the synchronization and the embedding. The synchronization stage consists of finding and ordering available components for insertion. One of the main challenges is to propose an effective synchronization method that defines an order on mesh components. In our work, we propose to use mesh vertices, specifically their geometric representation in space, as basic components for synchronization and embedding. We present three new synchronisation methods based on the construction of a Hamiltonian path in a vertex cloud. Two of these methods jointly perform the synchronization stage and the embedding stage. This is possible thanks to two new high-capacity embedding methods (from 3 to 24 bits per vertex) that rely on coordinates quantization. In this work we also highlight the constraints of this kind of synchronization. We analyze the different approaches proposed with several experimental studies. Our work is assessed on various criteria including the capacity and imperceptibility of the embedding method. We also pay attention to security aspects of the proposed methods.Cette thèse aborde les problèmes liés à la protection de maillages d'objets 3D. Ces objets peuvent, par exemple, être créés à l'aide d'outil de CAD développés par la société STRATEGIES. Dans un cadre industriel, les créateurs de maillages 3D ont besoin de disposer d'outils leur permettant de vérifier l'intégrité des maillages, ou de vérifier des autorisations pour l'impression 3D par exemple. Dans ce contexte nous étudions l'insertion de données cachées dans des maillages 3D. Cette approche permet d'insérer de façon imperceptible et sécurisée de l'information dans un maillage. Il peut s'agir d'un identifiant, de méta-informations ou d'un contenu tiers, par exemple, pour transmettre de façon secrète une texture. L'insertion de données cachées permet de répondre à ces problèmes en jouant sur le compromis entre la capacité, l'imperceptibilité et la robustesse. Généralement, les méthodes d'insertion de données cachées se composent de deux phases, la synchronisation et l'insertion. La synchronisation consiste à trouver et ordonner les éléments disponibles pour l'insertion. L'un des principaux challenges est de proposer une méthode de synchronisation 3D efficace qui définit un ordre sur les composants des maillages. Dans nos travaux, nous proposons d'utiliser les sommets du maillage, plus précisément leur représentation géométrique dans l'espace comme composants de base pour la synchronisation et l'insertion. Nous présentons donc trois nouvelles méthodes de synchronisation de la géométrie des maillages basées sur la construction d'un chemin hamiltonien dans un nuage de sommets. Deux de ces méthodes permettent de manière conjointe de synchroniser les sommets et de cacher un message. Cela est possible grâce à deux nouvelles méthodes d'insertion haute capacité (de 3 à 24 bits par sommet) qui s'appuient sur la quantification des coordonnées. Dans ces travaux nous mettons également en évidence les contraintes propres à ce type de synchronisation. Nous discutons des différentes approches proposées dans plusieurs études expérimentales. Nos travaux sont évalués sur différents critères dont la capacité et l'imperceptibilité de la méthode d'insertion. Nous portons également notre attention aux aspects sécurité des méthodes

    Image watermarking, steganography, and morphological processing

    With the fast development of computer technology, research in the fields of multimedia security, image processing, and robot vision have recently become popular. Image watermarking, steganogrphic system, morphological processing and shortest path planning are important subjects among them. In this dissertation, the fundamental techniques are reviewed first followed by the presentation of novel algorithms and theorems for these three subjects. The research on multimedia security consists of two parts, image watermarking and steganographic system. In image watermarking, several algorithms are developed to achieve different goals as shown below. In order to embed more watermarks and to minimize distortion of watermarked images, a novel watermarking technique using combinational spatial and frequency domains is presented. In order to correct rounding errors, a novel technique based on the genetic algorithm (GA) is developed. By separating medical images into Region of Interest (ROI) and non-ROI parts, higher compression rates can be achieved where the ROI is compressed by lossless compression and the non-ROI by lossy compression. The GA-based watermarking technique can also be considered as a fundamental platform for other fragile watermarking techniques. In order to simplify the selection and integrate different watermarking techniques, a novel adjusted-purpose digital watermarking is developed. In order to enlarge the capacity of robust watermarking, a novel robust high-capacity watermarking is developed. In steganographic system, a novel steganographic algorithm is developed by using GA to break the inspection of steganalytic system. In morphological processing, the GA-based techniques are developed to decompose arbitrary shapes of big binary structuring elements and arbitrary values of big grayscale structuring elements into small ones. The decomposition is suited for a parallel-pipelined architecture. The techniques can speed up the morphological processing and allow full freedom for users to design any type and any size of binary and grayscale structuring elements. In applications such as shortest path planning, a novel method is first presented to obtaining Euclidean distance transformation (EDT) in just two scans of image. The shortest path can be extracted based on distance maps by tracking minimum values. In order to record the motion path, a new chain-code representation is developed to allow forward and backward movements. By placing the smooth turning-angle constraint, it is possible to mimic realistic motions of cars. By using dynamically rotational morphology, it is not only guarantee collision-free in the shortest path, but also reduce time complexity dramatically. As soon as the distance map of a destination and collision-free codes have been established off-line, shortest paths of cars given any starting location toward the destination can be promptly obtained on-line
