    Markov bidirectional transfer matrix for detecting LSB speech steganography with low embedding rates

    Steganalysis with low embedding rates is still a challenge in the field of information hiding. Speech signals are typically processed by wavelet packet decomposition, which is capable of depicting the details of signals with high accuracy. A steganography detection algorithm based on the Markov bidirectional transition matrix (MBTM) of the wavelet packet coefficient (WPC) of the second-order derivative-based speech signal is proposed. On basis of the MBTM feature, which can better express the correlation of WPC, a Support Vector Machine (SVM) classifier is trained by a large number of Least Significant Bit (LSB) hidden data with embedding rates of 1%, 3%, 5%, 8%,10%, 30%, 50%, and 80%. LSB matching steganalysis of speech signals with low embedding rates is achieved. The experimental results show that the proposed method has obvious superiorities in steganalysis with low embedding rates compared with the classic method using histogram moment features in the frequency domain (HMIFD) of the second-order derivative-based WPC and the second-order derivative-based Mel-frequency cepstral coefficients (MFCC). Especially when the embedding rate is only 3%, the accuracy rate improves by 17.8%, reaching 68.5%, in comparison with the method using HMIFD features of the second derivative WPC. The detection accuracy improves as the embedding rate increases

    Steganography integration into a low-bit rate speech codec

    Low bit-rate speech codecs have been widely used in audio communications like VoIP and mobile communications, so that steganography in low bit-rate audio streams would have broad applications in practice. In this paper, the authors propose a new algorithm for steganography in low bit-rate VoIP audio streams by integrating information hiding into the process of speech encoding. The proposed algorithm performs data embedding while pitch period prediction is conducted during low bit-rate speech encoding, thus maintaining synchronization between information hiding and speech encoding. The steganography algorithm can achieve high quality of speech and prevent detection of steganalysis, but also has great compatibility with a standard low bit-rate speech codec without causing further delay by data embedding and extraction. Testing shows, with the proposed algorithm, the data embedding rate of the secret message can attain 4 bits / frame (133.3 bits / second)

    Hunting wild stego images, a domain adaptation problem in digital image forensics

    Digital image forensics is a field encompassing camera identication, forgery detection and steganalysis. Statistical modeling and machine learning have been successfully applied in the academic community of this maturing field. Still, large gaps exist between academic results and applications used by practicing forensic analysts, especially when the target samples are drawn from a different population than the data in a reference database. This thesis contains four published papers aiming at narrowing this gap in three different fields: mobile stego app detection, digital image steganalysis and camera identification. It is the first work to explore a way of extending the academic methods to real world images created by apps. New ideas and methods are developed for target images with very rich flexibility in the embedding rates, embedding algorithms, exposure settings and camera sources. The experimental results proved that the proposed methods work very well, even for the devices which are not included in the reference database

    Improved steganalysis technique based on least significant bit using artificial neural network for MP3 files

    MP3 files are one of the most widely used digital audio formats that provide a high compression ratio with reliable quality. Their widespread use has resulted in MP3 audio files becoming excellent covers to carry hidden information in audio steganography on the Internet. Emerging interest in uncovering such hidden information has opened up a field of research called steganalysis that looked at the detection of hidden messages in a specific media. Unfortunately, the detection accuracy in steganalysis is affected by bit rates, sampling rate of the data type, compression rates, file track size and standard, as well as benchmark dataset of the MP3 files. This thesis thus proposed an effective technique to steganalysis of MP3 audio files by deriving a combination of features from MP3 file properties. Several trials were run in selecting relevant features of MP3 files like the total harmony distortion, power spectrum density, and peak signal-to-noise ratio (PSNR) for investigating the correlation between different channels of MP3 signals. The least significant bit (LSB) technique was used in the detection of embedded secret files in stego-objects. This involved reading the stego-objects for statistical evaluation for possible points of secret messages and classifying these points into either high or low tendencies for containing secret messages. Feed Forward Neural Network with 3 layers and traingdx function with an activation function for each layer were also used. The network vector contains information about all features, and is used to create a network for the given learning process. Finally, an evaluation process involving the ANN test that compared the results with previous techniques, was performed. A 97.92% accuracy rate was recorded when detecting MP3 files under 96 kbps compression. These experimental results showed that the proposed approach was effective in detecting embedded information in MP3 files. It demonstrated significant improvement in detection accuracy at low embedding rates compared with previous work

    Secure covert communications over streaming media using dynamic steganography

    Streaming technologies such as VoIP are widely embedded into commercial and industrial applications, so it is imperative to address data security issues before the problems get really serious. This thesis describes a theoretical and experimental investigation of secure covert communications over streaming media using dynamic steganography. A covert VoIP communications system was developed in C++ to enable the implementation of the work being carried out. A new information theoretical model of secure covert communications over streaming media was constructed to depict the security scenarios in streaming media-based steganographic systems with passive attacks. The model involves a stochastic process that models an information source for covert VoIP communications and the theory of hypothesis testing that analyses the adversary‘s detection performance. The potential of hardware-based true random key generation and chaotic interval selection for innovative applications in covert VoIP communications was explored. Using the read time stamp counter of CPU as an entropy source was designed to generate true random numbers as secret keys for streaming media steganography. A novel interval selection algorithm was devised to choose randomly data embedding locations in VoIP streams using random sequences generated from achaotic process. A dynamic key updating and transmission based steganographic algorithm that includes a one-way cryptographical accumulator integrated into dynamic key exchange for covert VoIP communications, was devised to provide secure key exchange for covert communications over streaming media. The discrete logarithm problem in mathematics and steganalysis using t-test revealed the algorithm has the advantage of being the most solid method of key distribution over a public channel. The effectiveness of the new steganographic algorithm for covert communications over streaming media was examined by means of security analysis, steganalysis using non parameter Mann-Whitney-Wilcoxon statistical testing, and performance and robustness measurements. The algorithm achieved the average data embedding rate of 800 bps, comparable to other related algorithms. The results indicated that the algorithm has no or little impact on real-time VoIP communications in terms of speech quality (< 5% change in PESQ with hidden data), signal distortion (6% change in SNR after steganography) and imperceptibility, and it is more secure and effective in addressing the security problems than other related algorithms

    A comparative study of steganography using watermarking and modifications pixels versus least significant bit

    This article presents a steganography proposal based on embedding data expressed in base 10 by directly replacing the pixel values from images red, green blue (RGB) with a novel compression technique based on watermarks. The method considers a manipulation of the object to be embedded through a data compression triple process via LZ77 and base 64, watermark from low-quality images, embedded via discrete wavelet transformation-singular value decomposition (DWT-SVD), message embedded by watermark is recovered with data loss calculated, the watermark image and lost data is compressed again using LZ77 and base 64 to generate the final message. The final message is embedded in portable network graphic (PNG) images taken from the Microsoft common objects in context (COCO), ImageNet and uncompressed color image database (UCID) datasets, through a filtering process pixel of the images, where the selected pixels expressed in base 10, and the final message data is embedded by replacing units’ position of each pixel. In experimentation results an average of 40 dB in peak signal noise to ratio (PSNR) and 0.98 in the similarity structural index metric (SSIM) evaluation were obtained, and evasion steganalysis rates of up to 93% for stego-images, the data embedded average is 3.2 bpp
