Formalized Terminologies of Technical Systems and their Reliability

    Get PDF
In the lifecycle of a technical system experts with different educational backgrounds and experiences communicate with each other. Only a common understanding allows for coordinated and coherent action. Existing approaches of terminology management can not adequately fulfill the unambiguous, consistent, precise, multilingual conceptualization across different domains. In order to allow for an unobstructed interdisciplinary cooperation a harmonization of heterogeneous information is required and the fuzziness of the currently existing terminology needs to be overcome. The methodical framework to do this is developed in this work. The formalization of unambiguously defined technical terms is supported by the integrated use of formal means of description. Based on this approach the basic terms and definitions of control technology can be formally described. A standardized and well defined vocabulary is the basis for subsequently defined concepts and models. The methodical approach outlined in this work is applied to the formalization of a concept system of the dependability of technical systems. The individual concepts will be identified and integrated into a network structure by means of semantic relations. Equivalent designations for identical concepts can be identified and the currently existing frequent use of synonyms can be avoided. This helps to overcome the existing problems and to improve communication across different domains. As language is a complex phenomenon tool support is of utmost importance. This work lays the basis for a terminology management system which can model various facets of language and thus goes far beyond the scope and expressiveness of currently existing terminology management systems. The terminology management system introduced allows for the distributed and collaborative development of a terminology in standardization as well as in industrial applications

In the current public discussion, it is considered certain that we live in a time of rapidly advancing automation, which is driven in particular by the use of robots. Accordingly, many academic publications use robot density as the central indicator of automation. The present study challenges this perspective. It examines two central questions: First, what approaches to automation and digitalization are being pursued in the automotive industry in Germany, Japan and the USA? Second, how have employment and its occupational composition in the automotive industry developed in the three countries? The first part of the study focuses on the development of automation and digitalization approaches in the automotive industry from the early 1990s until today. It combines a qualitative analysis of press articles and a quantitative evaluation of the development of the stock of industrial robots from 1993 to 2018 based on the statistics of the International Federation of Robotics. The second part of the study focuses on the change in employment structures using occupational statistics from the Bureau of Labor Statistics (USA), the Federal Employment Agency (Germany) and the Statistics Bureau of Japan. The study questions the perception of an automation-related threat to employment and especially to production employment. At the same time, it discusses developments in Germany, Japan and the USA in comparison and highlights differences in automation and digitalization approaches as well as different paths of change in employment structures
