    Quality of service aware data dissemination in vehicular Ad Hoc networks

    Des systèmes de transport intelligents (STI) seront éventuellement fournis dans un proche avenir pour la sécurité et le confort des personnes lors de leurs déplacements sur les routes. Les réseaux ad-hoc véhiculaires (VANETs) représentent l'élément clé des STI. Les VANETs sont formés par des véhicules qui communiquent entre eux et avec l'infrastructure. En effet, les véhicules pourront échanger des messages qui comprennent, par exemple, des informations sur la circulation routière, les situations d'urgence et les divertissements. En particulier, les messages d'urgence sont diffusés par des véhicules en cas d'urgence (p.ex. un accident de voiture); afin de permettre aux conducteurs de réagir à temps (p.ex., ralentir), les messages d'urgence doivent être diffusés de manière fiable dans un délai très court. Dans les VANETs, il existe plusieurs facteurs, tels que le canal à pertes, les terminaux cachés, les interférences et la bande passante limitée, qui compliquent énormément la satisfaction des exigences de fiabilité et de délai des messages d'urgence. Dans cette thèse, en guise de première contribution, nous proposons un schéma de diffusion efficace à plusieurs sauts, appelé Dynamic Partitioning Scheme (DPS), pour diffuser les messages d'urgence. DPS calcule les tailles de partitions dynamiques et le calendrier de transmission pour chaque partition; à l'intérieur de la zone arrière de l'expéditeur, les partitions sont calculées de sorte qu'en moyenne chaque partition contient au moins un seul véhicule; l'objectif est de s'assurer que seul un véhicule dans la partition la plus éloignée (de l'expéditeur) est utilisé pour diffuser le message, jusqu'au saut suivant; ceci donne lieu à un délai d'un saut plus court. DPS assure une diffusion rapide des messages d'urgence. En outre, un nouveau mécanisme d'établissement de liaison, qui utilise des tonalités occupées, est proposé pour résoudre le problème du problème de terminal caché. Dans les VANETs, la Multidiffusion, c'est-à-dire la transmission d'un message d'une source à un nombre limité de véhicules connus en tant que destinations, est très importante. Par rapport à la diffusion unique, avec Multidiffusion, la source peut simultanément prendre en charge plusieurs destinations, via une arborescence de multidiffusion, ce qui permet d'économiser de la bande passante et de réduire la congestion du réseau. Cependant, puisque les VANETs ont une topologie dynamique, le maintien de la connectivité de l'arbre de multidiffusion est un problème majeur. Comme deuxième contribution, nous proposons deux approches pour modéliser l'utilisation totale de bande passante d'une arborescence de multidiffusion: (i) la première approche considère le nombre de segments de route impliqués dans l'arbre de multidiffusion et (ii) la seconde approche considère le nombre d'intersections relais dans l'arbre de multidiffusion. Une heuristique est proposée pour chaque approche. Pour assurer la qualité de service de l'arbre de multidiffusion, des procédures efficaces sont proposées pour le suivi des destinations et la surveillance de la qualité de service des segments de route. Comme troisième contribution, nous étudions le problème de la congestion causée par le routage du trafic de données dans les VANETs. Nous proposons (1) une approche de routage basée sur l’infonuagique qui, contrairement aux approches existantes, prend en compte les chemins de routage existants qui relaient déjà les données dans les VANETs. Les nouvelles demandes de routage sont traitées de sorte qu'aucun segment de route ne soit surchargé par plusieurs chemins de routage croisés. Au lieu d'acheminer les données en utilisant des chemins de routage sur un nombre limité de segments de route, notre approche équilibre la charge des données en utilisant des chemins de routage sur l'ensemble des tronçons routiers urbains, dans le but d'empêcher, dans la mesure du possible, les congestions locales dans les VANETs; et (2) une approche basée sur le réseau défini par logiciel (SDN) pour surveiller la connectivité VANET en temps réel et les délais de transmission sur chaque segment de route. Les données de surveillance sont utilisées en entrée de l'approche de routage.Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) will be eventually provided in the near future for both safety and comfort of people during their travel on the roads. Vehicular ad-hoc Networks (VANETs), represent the key component of ITS. VANETs consist of vehicles that communicate with each other and with the infrastructure. Indeed, vehicles will be able to exchange messages that include, for example, information about road traffic, emergency situations, and entertainment. Particularly, emergency messages are broadcasted by vehicles in case of an emergency (e.g., car accident); in order to allow drivers to react in time (e.g., slow down), emergency messages must be reliably disseminated with very short delay. In VANETs, there are several factors, such as lossy channel, hidden terminals, interferences and scarce bandwidth, which make satisfying reliability and delay requirements of emergency messages very challenging. In this thesis, as the first contribution, we propose a reliable time-efficient and multi-hop broadcasting scheme, called Dynamic Partitioning Scheme (DPS), to disseminate emergency messages. DPS computes dynamic partition sizes and the transmission schedule for each partition; inside the back area of the sender, the partitions are computed such that in average each partition contains at least a single vehicle; the objective is to ensure that only a vehicle in the farthest partition (from the sender) is used to disseminate the message, to next hop, resulting in shorter one hop delay. DPS ensures fast dissemination of emergency messages. Moreover, a new handshaking mechanism, that uses busy tones, is proposed to solve the problem of hidden terminal problem. In VANETs, Multicasting, i.e. delivering a message from a source to a limited known number of vehicles as destinations, is very important. Compared to Unicasting, with Multicasting, the source can simultaneously support multiple destinations, via a multicast tree, saving bandwidth and reducing overall communication congestion. However, since VANETs have a dynamic topology, maintaining the connectivity of the multicast tree is a major issue. As the second contribution, we propose two approaches to model total bandwidth usage of a multicast tree: (i) the first approach considers the number of road segments involved in the multicast tree and (ii) the second approach considers the number of relaying intersections involved in the multicast tree. A heuristic is proposed for each approach. To ensure QoS of the multicasting tree, efficient procedures are proposed for tracking destinations and monitoring QoS of road segments. As the third contribution, we study the problem of network congestion in routing data traffic in VANETs. We propose (1) a Cloud-based routing approach that, in opposition to existing approaches, takes into account existing routing paths which are already relaying data in VANETs. New routing requests are processed such that no road segment gets overloaded by multiple crossing routing paths. Instead of routing over a limited set of road segments, our approach balances the load of communication paths over the whole urban road segments, with the objective to prevent, whenever possible, local congestions in VANETs; and (2) a Software Defined Networking (SDN) based approach to monitor real-time VANETs connectivity and transmission delays on each road segment.     On Energy Efficient Routing Protocols for Wireless Sensor Networks

    The sensor nodes communicate together by wireless techniques, and these communication techniques are handled by routing protocols. The resource limitation and unreliable low power links between the sensor nodes make it difficult to design an efficient routing protocol. The sink may be either static or mobile in the network. In many scenarios, static sink causes hotspots, where the sensor nodes near to the sink die out soon due to transmission overhead. On the other hand, the mobile sink improves the lifetime of a network by avoiding excessive transmission overhead on the nodes that are close to the sink. Further, an attempt is made to resolve the issues of sensor nodes and sink mobility by proposing energy-efficient routing techniques for wireless sensor network. A multipath routing protocol (MRP) is proposed, which reduces the control overhead for route discovery and increases the throughput of the network. The proposed multipath routing protocol is designed to improve the lifetime, latency and reliability through discovering multiple paths from the source node to the sink. MRP is a sink initiated route discovery process, where source node location is known. In MRP, one primary path and number of alternate paths are discovered. The sink may receive redundant data due to densely deployed sensor nodes. Clustering the sensor nodes is an effective way to reduce the redundancy. The cluster head aggregates the cluster members’ data before transmitting it to the sink. A cluster based multipath routing protocol (CMRP) is proposed, where the clustering technique reduces the data traffic in the network, and multipath technique provides the reliable path. Although, the hotspot problem can be resolved with mobile sink, it makes the network dynamic. A tree-based data dissemination protocol with mobile sink called TEDD is proposed to overcome the above problems. TEDD manages the mobility of the sink and balances the load among the sensor nodes to maximize the lifetime. A sensor node initiates the tree construction and becomes the root node of the tree. Sensor nodes can send the data to the sink using this tree. It has been observed that the TEDD is a robust and energy-efficient protocol in themobile sink environment. The proposed dense tree based routing protocol (DTRP) is an extension of TEDD. The objectives of DTRP are to minimize the control overhead and reduce the path length. Both the objectives are achieved by reducing the number of relay nodes in the tree structure. DTRP resulted in, increased lifetime and reduced end-to-end latency. A clustered tree based routing protocol (CTRP) is designed to reduce thedata traffic in the network and efficiently manage the sink mobility. The traffic is reduced by the cluster head, which uses the aggregation technique. The number of cluster heads is restricted to the number of grids present in the network. The CTRP efficiently manages the load among the sensor nodes. The tree is constructed in the network using the cluster heads as vertices. The data can be transmitted to the sink through the tree structure. The CTRP is compared with the TEDD and DTRP in terms of energy efficiency, end-to-end latency, data delivery ratio and network lifetime. For the time-sensitive applications, a rendezvous based routing (RRP) with mobile sink is designed. Each sensor node can communicate with the rendezvous region. In RRP, two methods for data transmission are proposed. In the first method, source node directly transmits their sensory data to the rendezvous area. In the second method, the source node retrieves the sink’s current position and sends the data to the sink through intermediate nodes. The end-to-end latency and data delivery ratio are improved in the first proposed method. Whereas, the energy consumption and lifetime in the second proposed method are enhanced

    Energy-efficient Transitional Near-* Computing

    Studies have shown that communication networks, devices accessing the Internet, and data centers account for 4.6% of the worldwide electricity consumption. Although data centers, core network equipment, and mobile devices are getting more energy-efficient, the amount of data that is being processed, transferred, and stored is vastly increasing. Recent computer paradigms, such as fog and edge computing, try to improve this situation by processing data near the user, the network, the devices, and the data itself. In this thesis, these trends are summarized under the new term near-* or near-everything computing. Furthermore, a novel paradigm designed to increase the energy efficiency of near-* computing is proposed: transitional computing. It transfers multi-mechanism transitions, a recently developed paradigm for a highly adaptable future Internet, from the field of communication systems to computing systems. Moreover, three types of novel transitions are introduced to achieve gains in energy efficiency in near-* environments, spanning from private Infrastructure-as-a-Service (IaaS) clouds, Software-defined Wireless Networks (SDWNs) at the edge of the network, Disruption-Tolerant Information-Centric Networks (DTN-ICNs) involving mobile devices, sensors, edge devices as well as programmable components on a mobile System-on-a-Chip (SoC). Finally, the novel idea of transitional near-* computing for emergency response applications is presented to assist rescuers and affected persons during an emergency event or a disaster, although connections to cloud services and social networks might be disturbed by network outages, and network bandwidth and battery power of mobile devices might be limited

    Protecting Contextual Information in WSNs: Source- and Receiver-Location Privacy Solutions

    La privacidad es un derecho fundamental recogido por numerosas leyes y tratados entre los que destaca la Declaración Universal de los Derechos Humanos de las Naciones Unidas. Sin embargo, este derecho fundamental se ha visto vulnerado en numerosas ocasiones a lo largo de la historia; y el desarrollo de la tecnología, en especial la mejora de los sistemas de recolección, analisis y diseminación de información, han tenido gran parte de culpa. En la actualidad nos encontramos en un punto en el que el desarrollo y despliegue de sistemas ubicuos, encabezados por las redes inalámbricas de sensores, puede llegar a suponer un riesgo de privacidad sin precedentes dada su capacidad para recolectar información en cantidades y situaciones hasta el momento insospechadas. Existe, por tanto, una urgente necesidad de desarrollar mecanismos capaces de velar por nuestra información más sensible. Es precisamente éste uno de los objetivos principales de la presente tesis doctoral: facilitar la integración de las redes inalámbricas de sensores en nuestro día a día sin que éstas supongan un grave riesgo de privacidad. Esta tesis se centra en un problema de privacidad particular que viene derivado de la naturaleza inalámbrica de las comunicaciones y de la necesidad imperiosa de ahorrar energía que existe en estas redes de recursos restringidos. Para las redes de sensores, las comunicaciones suponen un gran porcentaje del presupuesto energético y, por ello, los protocolos de encaminamiento empleados tienden a minimizarlas, utilizando protocolos de camino óptimo. Aprovechándose de esta situación, un observador podría, mediante técnicas de análisis de tráfico no demasiado sofisticadas, y sin necesidad de descifrar el contenido de los paquete, determinar el origen y el destino de las comunicaciones. Esto supone, al igual que en los sistemas de comunicación tradicionales, un grave riesgo para la privacidad. Dado que el problema de la privacidad de localización en redes de sensores se reduce a una cuestión de análisis de tráfico, parece razonable pensar que las soluciones desarrolladas a tal fin en redes de computadores pueden ser de utilida. Sin embargo, esta hipótesis ha sido rechazada en varias ocasiones con argumentos vagos al respecto de las limitaciones computacionales y energéticas de las redes de sensores. Nosotros consideramos que esto no es motivo suficiente para descartar estas soluciones ya que, a pesar de la tendencia actual, en el futuro podríamos tener nodos sensores de gran capacidad. Por ello, uno de los objetivos de esta tesis ha sido realizar un análisis exhaustivo sobre la aplicabilidad de estas soluciones al ámbito de las redes de sensores, centrándonos no sólo en los requisitos computacionales sino también en las propiedades de anonimato que se persiguen, en los modelos de atacante y en las posibles limitaciones que podrían derivarse de su aplicación. Por otra parte, se ha realizado un amplio análisis de las soluciones de privacidad de localización existentes para redes de sensores. Este análisis no se ha centrado únicamente en estudiar las técnicas de protección de empleadas sino que además se ha esforzado en destacar las ventajas e inconvenientes de las distintas soluciones. Esto ha permitido desarrollar una completa taxonomía en varios niveles basada en los recursos que se desean proteger, los modelos de adversario a los que hacer frente y las principales características o técnicas empleadas por las diferentes soluciones. Además, a partir de esto se han detectado una serie de problemas abiertos y puntos de mejora del estado del arte actual, que se han plasmado en dos nuevas soluciones; una de las soluciones se ha centrado en la protección de la localización del origen de datos, mientras que la otra se ha enfocado a la protección de la estación base. Ambas soluciones tienen en cuenta atacantes con un rango de escucha parcial y capaces de desplazarse en el terreno para observar las comunicaciones en diferentes zonas de la red. La primera de las soluciones desarrolladas parte de la observación de que los mecanismos actuales se basan principalmente en el envío de paquetes siguiendo caminos aleatorios sin ningún conocimiento acerca de si estos caminos son realmente efectivos para hacer frente a un atacante local. La idea detrás de CALP es aprovechar la capacidad que tienen las redes de sensores para sentir lo que pasa en su entorno para desarrollar mecanismos de protección más inteligentes utilizando información acerca del atacante. De esta forma, se consigue reducir drásticamente el consumo energético de la solución y al mismo tiempo se reduce el retraso de las comunicaciones, ya que el mecanismo sólo se activa ante la presencia de un atacante. Aunque esta idea se ha aplicado únicamente a la protección de los nodos origen de datos, sus características indican que también sería posible aplicarla con éxito a la protección de la estación base. La segunda solución surge tras observar que las soluciones para proteger la estación base son demasiado costosas a nivel energético o, en su defecto, revelan información sobre su localización. Además, hasta la fecha ninguna solución había tenido en cuenta que si un atacante obtiene las tablas de rutas de un nodo obtiene información sobre la estación base. Nuestra solución, HISP-NC, se basa en dos mecanismos complementarios que, por un lado, hacen frente a ataques de análisis de tráfico y, por otro lado, protegen frente al nuevo modelo de atacante desarrollado. El primer mecanismo se basa en la homogeneización del tráfico en el entorno del camino y el segundo en la perturbación de la tabla de rutas, de manera que se dificulta el ataque al tiempo que se asegura la llegada de datos a la estación base

    Use of Inferential Statistics to Design Effective Communication Protocols for Wireless Sensor Networks

    This thesis explores the issues and techniques associated with employing the principles of inferential statistics to design effective Medium Access Control (MAC), routing and duty cycle management strategies for multihop Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs). The main objective of these protocols are to maximise the throughput of the network, to prolong the lifetime of nodes and to reduce the end-to-end delay of packets over a general network scenario without particular considerations for specific topology configurations, traffic patterns or routing policies. WSNs represent one of the leading-edge technologies that have received substantial research efforts due to their prominent roles in many applications. However, to design effective communication protocols for WSNs is particularly challenging due to the scarce resources of these networks and the requirement for large-scale deployment. The MAC, routing and duty cycle management protocols are amongst the important strategies that are required to ensure correct operations of WSNs. This thesis makes use of the inferential statistics field to design these protocols; inferential statistics was selected as it provides a rich design space with powerful approaches and methods. The MAC protocol proposed in this thesis exploits the statistical characteristics of the Gamma distribution to enable each node to adjust its contention parameters dynamically based on its inference for the channel occupancy. This technique reduces the service time of packets and leverages the throughput by improving the channel utilisation. Reducing the service time minimises the energy consumed in contention to access the channel which in turn prolongs the lifetime of nodes. The proposed duty cycle management scheme uses non-parametric Bayesian inference to enable each node to determine the best times and durations for its sleeping durations without posing overheads on the network. Hence the lifetime of node is prolonged by mitigating the amount of energy wasted in overhearing and idle listening. Prolonging the lifetime of nodes increases the throughput of the network and reduces the end-to-end delay as it allows nodes to route their packets over optimal paths for longer periods. The proposed routing protocol uses one of the state-of-the-art inference techniques dubbed spatial reasoning that enables each node to figure out the spatial relationships between nodes without overwhelming the network with control packets. As a result, the end-to-end delay is reduced while the throughput and lifetime are increased. Besides the proposed protocols, this thesis utilises the analytical aspects of statistics to develop rigorous analytical models that can accurately predict the queuing and medium access delay and energy consumption over multihop networks. Moreover, this thesis provides a broader perspective for design of communication protocols for WSNs by casting the operations of these networks in the domains of the artificial chemistry discipline and the harmony search optimisation algorithm

    Delay tolerant networking in a shopping mall environment

    The increasing popularity of computing devices with short-range wireless offers new communication service opportunities. These devices are small and may be mobile or embedded in almost any type of object imaginable, including cars, tools, appliances, clothing and various consumer goods. The majority of them can store data and transmit it when a wireless, or wired, transmitting medium is available. The mobility of the individuals carrying such short-range wireless devices is important because varying distances creates connection opportunities and disconnections. It is likely that successful forwarding algorithms will be based, at least in part, on the patterns of mobility that are seen in real settings. For this reason, studying human mobility in different environments for extended periods of time is essential. Thus we need to use measurements from realistic settings to drive the development and evaluation of appropriate forwarding algorithms. Recently, several significant efforts have been made to collect data reflecting human mobility. However, these traces are from specific scenarios and their validity is difficult to generalize. In this thesis we contribute to this effort by studying human mobility in shopping malls. We ran a field trial to collect real-world Bluetooth contact data from shop employees and clerks in a shopping mall over six days. This data will allow the informed design of forwarding policies and algorithms for such settings and scenarios, and determine the effects of users' mobility patterns on the prevalence of networking opportunities. Using this data set we have analysed human mobility and interaction patterns in this shopping mall environment. We present evidence of distinct classes of mobility in this situation and characterize them in terms of power law coefficients which approximate inter-contact time distributions. These results are quite different from previous studies in other environments. We have developed a software tool which implements a mobility model for "structured" scenarios such as shopping malls, trade fairs, music festivals, stadiums and museums. In this thesis we define as structured environment, a scenario having definite and highly organised structure, where people are organised by characteristic patterns of relationship and mobility. We analysed the contact traces collected on the field to guide the design of this mobility model. We show that our synthetic mobility model produces inter-contact time and contact duration distributions which approximate well to those of the real traces. Our scenario generator also implements several random mobility models. We compared our Shopping Mall mobility model to three other random mobility models by comparing the performances of two benchmark delay tolerant routing protocols, Epidemic and Prophet, when simulated with movement traces from each model. Thus, we demonstrate that the choice of a mobility model is a significant consideration when designing and evaluating delay-tolerant mobile ad-hoc network protocols. Finally, we have also conducted an initial study to evaluate the effect of delivering messages in shopping mall environments by exclusively forwarding them to customers or sellers, each of which has distinctive mobility patterns
