    Oceanic and coastal phenomena with dimensions ranging to 100 km are dealt with. The two major categories discussed are waves, their generation and dynamics and ocean-land related problems. The dynamics, of surface waves in both capillary and gravity ranges indicates that microwave technology provides a superior means of measuring simultaneously the spatial and temporal properties of ocean waves. The need for basic studies of physical phenomena in support of active microwave sensing is indicated. Active microwave scattering from surface waves is discussed in terms of wave dynamics

    Interest in environmental issues and the magnitude of the environmental changes continues. One way to gain more understanding of the atmosphere is to make measurements on a global scale from space. The Earth Observation System is a series of new sensors to measure globally atmospheric parameters. Analysis of satellite data by developing algorithms to interpret the radiance information improves the understanding and also defines requirements for these sensors. One measure of knowledge of the atmosphere lies in the ability to predict its behavior. Use of numerical and experimental models provides a better understanding of these processes. These efforts are described in the context of satellite data analysis and fundamental studies of atmospheric dynamics which examine selected processes important to the global circulation

    Following the 13th International Workshop on Wave Hindcasting and Forecasting and 4th Coastal Hazards Symposium in October 2013 in Banff, Canada, a topical collection has appeared in recent issues of Ocean Dynamics. Here we give a brief overview of the history of the conference since its inception in 1986 and of the progress made in the fields of wind-generated ocean waves and the modelling of coastal hazards before we summarize the main results of the papers that have appeared in the topical collection

    Turbulence and mixing in the surface layer of the ocean is a significant element in the combined ocean-atmosphere system, and plays a considerable role in the transfer of heat, gas and momentum across the air-sea boundary. Furthermore, improving knowledge of the evolution of energy within the ocean system, both globally and locally, holds importance for improving our understanding of the dynamics of the ocean at large- and small-scales. As such, insight into turbulence and turbulent flows at the ocean surface is becoming increasingly important for its role in ocean-atmosphere exchange and, from a wider perspective, climate change.A research project was initiated to understand the role that spacecraft remote-sensing may play in improving observation of “turbulence” (in a broad sense) in the ocean, and for identifying how steps towards such observation may be made.
