Analysis and Compensation of Power Amplifier Distortions in Wireless Communication Systems
Wireless communication devices transmit message signals which should possess desirable power levels for quality transmission. Power amplifiers are devices in the wireless transmitters which increase the power of signals to the desired levels, but produce nonlinear distortions due to their saturation property, resulting in degradation of the quality of the transmitted signal. This thesis talks about the analysis and performance of communication systems in presence of power amplifier nonlinear distortions.
First, the thesis studies the effects of power amplifier nonlinear distortions on communication signals and proposes a simplified design for identification and compensation of the distortions at the receiver end of a wireless communication system using a two-step pilot signal approach. Step one involves the estimation of the channel state information of the wireless channel and step two estimates the power amplifier parameters. Then, the estimated power amplifier parameters are used for transmitter identification with the help of a testing procedure proposed in this thesis.
With the evolution of millimeter wave wireless communication systems today, study and analysis of these systems is the need of the hour. Thus, the second part of this thesis is extended to study the performance of millimeter wave wireless communication systems in presence of power amplifier nonlinear distortions and derives an analytical expression for evaluation of the symbol error probability for this system. The proposed analysis evaluates the performance of millimeter wave systems theoretically without the need of simulations, and is helpful in studying systems in the absence of actual hardware
Digital Pre-distortion for Interference Reduction in Dynamic Spectrum Access Networks
Given the ever increasing reliance of today’s society on ubiquitous wireless access, the paradigm of dynamic spectrum access (DSA) as been proposed and implemented for utilizing the limited wireless spectrum more efficiently. Orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) is growing in popularity for adoption into wireless services employing DSA frame- work, due to its high bandwidth efficiency and resiliency to multipath fading. While these advantages have been proven for many wireless applications, including LTE-Advanced and numerous IEEE wireless standards, one potential drawback of OFDM or its non-contiguous variant, NC-OFDM, is that it exhibits high peak-to-average power ratios (PAPR), which can induce in-band and out-of-band (OOB) distortions when the peaks of the waveform enter the compression region of the transmitter power amplifier (PA). Such OOB emissions can interfere with existing neighboring transmissions, and thereby severely deteriorate the reliability of the DSA network. A performance-enhancing digital pre-distortion (DPD) technique compensating for PA and in-phase/quadrature (I/Q) modulator distortions is proposed in this dissertation. Al- though substantial research efforts into designing DPD schemes have already been presented in the open literature, there still exists numerous opportunities to further improve upon the performance of OOB suppression for NC-OFDM transmission in the presence of RF front-end impairments. A set of orthogonal polynomial basis functions is proposed in this dissertation together with a simplified joint DPD structure. A performance analysis is presented to show that the OOB emissions is reduced to approximately 50 dBc with proposed algorithms employed during NC-OFDM transmission. Furthermore, a novel and intuitive DPD solution that can minimize the power regrowth at any pre-specified frequency in the spurious domain is proposed in this dissertation. Conventional DPD methods have been proven to be able to effectively reduce the OOB emissions that fall on top of adjacent channels. However more spectral emissions in more distant frequency ranges are generated by employing such DPD solutions, which are potentially in violation of the spurious emission limit. At the same time, the emissions in adjacent channel must be kept under the OOB limit. To the best of the author’s knowledge, there has not been extensive research conducted on this topic. Mathematical derivation procedures of the proposed algorithm are provided for both memoryless nonlinear model and memory-based nonlinear model. Simulation results show that the proposed method is able to provide a good balance of OOB emissions and emissions in the far out spurious domain, by reducing the spurious emissions by 4-5 dB while maintaining the adjacent channel leakage ratio (ACLR) improvement by at least 10 dB, comparing to the PA output spectrum without any DPD

Design and Linearization of Energy Efficiency Power Amplifier in Nonlinear OFDM Transmitter for LTE-5G Applications. Simulation and measurements of energy efficiency power amplifier in the presence of nonlinear OFDM transmitter system and digital predistortion based on Hammerstein-Wiener method
This research work has made an effort to understand a novel line of radio frequency
power amplifiers (RFPAs) that address initiatives for efficiency enhancement and
linearity compensation to harmonize the fifth generation (5G) campaign. The objective
is to enhance the performance of an orthogonal frequency division multiplexing-long
term evolution (OFDM-LTE) transmitter by reducing the nonlinear distortion of the
RFPA.
The first part of this work explores the design and implementation of 15.5 W class AB
RF power amplifier, adopting a balanced technique to stimulate efficiency enhancement
and redeeming exhibition of excessive power in the transmitter. Consequently, this work
goes beyond improving efficiency over a linear RF power amplifier design; in which a
comprehensive investigation on the fundamental and harmonic components of class F
RF power amplifier using a load-pull approach to realise an optimum load impedance
and the matching network is presented. The frequency bandwidth for both amplifiers was
allocated to operate in the 2.620-2.690 GHz of mobile LTE applications.
The second part explores the development of the behavioural model for the class AB
power amplifier. A particular novel, Hammerstein-Wiener based model is proposed to
describe the dynamic nonlinear behaviour of the power amplifier. The RF power amplifier
nonlinear distortion is approximated using a new linear parameter approximation
approach. The first and second-order Hammerstein-Wiener using the Normalised Least
Mean Square Error (NLMSE) algorithm is used with the aim of easing the complexity of
filtering process during linear memory cancellation. Moreover, an enhanced adaptive
Wiener model is proposed to explore the nonlinear memory effect in the system. The
proposed approach is able to balance between convergence speed and high-level
accuracy when compared with behavioural modelling algorithms that are more complex
in computation.
Finally, the adaptive predistorter technique is implemented and verified in the OFDM
transceiver test-bed. The results were compared against the computed one from
MATLAB simulation for OFDM and 5G modulation transmitters. The results have
confirmed the reliability of the model and the effectiveness of the proposed predistorter.Fundacão para a Ciência e a Tecnologia, Portugal, under

mm-Wave Data Transmission and Measurement Techniques: A Holistic Approach
The ever-increasing demand on data services places unprecedented technical requirements on networks capacity. With wireless systems having significant roles in broadband delivery, innovative approaches to their development are imperative. By leveraging new spectral resources available at millimeter-wave (mm-wave) frequencies, future systems can utilize new signal structures and new system architectures in order to achieve long-term sustainable solutions. This thesis proposes the holistic development of efficient and cost-effective techniques and systems which make high-speed data transmission at mm-wave feasible. In this paradigm, system designs, signal processing, and measurement techniques work toward a single goal; to achieve satisfactory system level key performance indicators (KPIs). Two intimately-related objectives are simultaneously addressed: the realization of efficient mm-wave data transmission and the development of measurement techniques to enable and assist the design and evaluation of mm-wave circuits. The standard approach to increase spectral efficiency is to increase the modulation order at the cost of higher transmission power. To improve upon this, a signal structure called spectrally efficient frequency division multiplexing (SEFDM) is utilized. SEFDM adds an additional dimension of continuously tunable spectral efficiency enhancement. Two new variants of SEFDM are implemented and experimentally demonstrated, where both variants are shown to outperform standard signals.A low-cost low-complexity mm-wave transmitter architecture is proposed and experimentally demonstrated. A simple phase retarder predistorter and a frequency multiplier are utilized to successfully generate spectrally efficient mm-wave signals while simultaneously mitigating various issues found in conventional mm-wave systems.A measurement technique to characterize circuits and components under antenna array mutual coupling effects is proposed and demonstrated. With minimal setup requirement, the technique effectively and conveniently maps prescribed transmission scenarios to the measurement environment and offers evaluations of the components in terms of relevant KPIs in addition to conventional metrics. Finally, a technique to estimate transmission and reflection coefficients is proposed and demonstrated. In one variant, the technique enables the coefficients to be estimated using wideband modulated signals, suitable for implementation in measurements performed under real usage scenarios. In another variant, the technique enhances the precision of noisy S-parameter measurements, suitable for characterizations of wideband mm-wave components
System capacity enhancement for 5G network and beyond
A thesis submitted to the University of Bedfordshire, in fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of PhilosophyThe demand for wireless digital data is dramatically increasing year over year. Wireless communication systems like Laptops, Smart phones, Tablets, Smart watch, Virtual Reality devices and so on are becoming an important part of people’s daily life. The number of mobile devices is increasing at a very fast speed as well as the requirements for mobile devices such as super high-resolution image/video, fast download speed, very short latency and high reliability, which raise challenges to the existing wireless communication networks. Unlike the previous four generation communication networks, the fifth-generation (5G) wireless communication network includes many technologies such as millimetre-wave communication, massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO), visual light communication (VLC), heterogeneous network (HetNet) and so forth. Although 5G has not been standardised yet, these above technologies have been studied in both academia and industry and the goal of the research is to enhance and improve the system capacity for 5G networks and beyond by studying some key problems and providing some effective solutions existing in the above technologies from system implementation and hardware impairments’ perspective.
The key problems studied in this thesis include interference cancellation in HetNet, impairments calibration for massive MIMO, channel state estimation for VLC, and low latency parallel Turbo decoding technique. Firstly, inter-cell interference in HetNet is studied and a cell specific reference signal (CRS) interference cancellation method is proposed to mitigate the performance degrade in enhanced inter-cell interference coordination (eICIC). This method takes carrier frequency offset (CFO) and timing offset (TO) of the user’s received signal into account. By reconstructing the interfering signal and cancelling it afterwards, the capacity of HetNet is enhanced.
Secondly, for massive MIMO systems, the radio frequency (RF) impairments of the hardware will degrade the beamforming performance. When operated in time duplex division (TDD) mode, a massive MIMO system relies on the reciprocity of the channel which can be broken by the transmitter and receiver RF impairments. Impairments calibration has been studied and a closed-loop reciprocity calibration method is proposed in this thesis. A test device (TD) is introduced in this calibration method that can estimate the transmitters’ impairments over-the-air and feed the results back to the base station via the Internet. The uplink pilots sent by the TD can assist the BS receivers’ impairment estimation. With both the uplink and downlink impairments estimates, the reciprocity calibration coefficients can be obtained. By computer simulation and lab experiment, the performance of the proposed method is evaluated.
Channel coding is an essential part of a wireless communication system which helps fight with noise and get correct information delivery. Turbo codes is one of the most reliable codes that has been used in many standards such as WiMAX and LTE. However, the decoding process of turbo codes is time-consuming and the decoding latency should be improved to meet the requirement of the future network. A reverse interleave address generator is proposed that can reduce the decoding time and a low latency parallel turbo decoder has been implemented on a FPGA platform. The simulation and experiment results prove the effectiveness of the address generator and show that there is a trade-off between latency and throughput with a limited hardware resource.
Apart from the above contributions, this thesis also investigated multi-user precoding for MIMO VLC systems. As a green and secure technology, VLC is achieving more and more attention and could become a part of 5G network especially for indoor communication. For indoor scenario, the MIMO VLC channel could be easily ill-conditioned. Hence, it is important to study the impact of the channel state to the precoding performance. A channel state estimation method is proposed based on the signal to interference noise ratio (SINR) of the users’ received signal. Simulation results show that it can enhance the capacity of the indoor MIMO VLC system
Roadmap on multimode photonics
Multimode devices and components have attracted considerable attention in the last years, and different research topics and themes have emerged very recently. The multimodality can be seen as an additional degree of freedom in designing devices, thus allowing for the development of more complex and sophisticated components. The propagation of different modes can be used to increase the fiber optic capacity, but also to introduce novel intermodal interactions, as well as allowing for complex manipulation of optical modes for a variety of applications. In this roadmap we would like to give to the readers a comprehensive overview of the most recent developments in the field, presenting contributions coming from different research topics, including optical fiber technologies, integrated optics, basic physics and telecommunications
Behavioral modeling techniques for power amplifier digital pre-distortion
Abstract. The dramatic increase in the capacity of telecommunication networks has increased the requirements of the devices, one example of which is the continuously widening bandwidth. Using broadband signals requires often high linearity from the transmitter — and especially from the power amplifier at the end of the transmitter chain — but at the same time, it should operate as efficiently as possible. The power amplifier is the most power consuming component in the transmitter and inherently nonlinear, so its linearization is an essential part of the overall system performance. Of the current linearization techniques, digital pre-distortion has established itself as the most common tool for providing better linearity and efficiency in a power amplifier and transmitter.
In this thesis, the performance of power amplifier models used in digital pre-distortion was investigated and their differences compared to the more complex reference model used in the actual base station product. The aim of this thesis was to create a behavioral model that corresponds the physical component as accurately as the reference model. This behavioral model could be used for example to design and optimize a power amplifier and linearization algorithm without the need for the secret model for the product. This, in its turn, would result in more efficient work with third parties such as component vendors and reduce the linearization time.
The performance parameters of the behavioral models were introduced at the beginning of the thesis. These were also used in later parts to analyse the measurement results. Power amplifier linearization measurements were performed under laboratory conditions on a MATLAB® test bench. From the results, it was found that the use of a simple memoryless behavioral model is not enough to describe the physical nonlinear component with sufficient accuracy. The results also showed that the complexity of the model reduces its accuracy if the model coefficients are not correctly positioned. In this thesis, we succeeded in creating a memory model that describes the reference model sufficiently accurately on several meters, taking into account also the memory effects of the power amplifier. This thesis thus provides a good basis for further development of the actual modeling tool for product projects.Tehovahvistimen käyttäytymistason mallinnustekniikat esisärötyksen tueksi. Tiivistelmä. Tietoliikenneverkkojen kapasiteetin räjähdysmäinen kasvu on lisännyt laitteiden vaatimuksia, joista yhtenä esimerkkinä on jatkuvasti suureneva kaistanleveys.

Design and implementation of adaptive baseband predistorter for OFDM nonlinear transmitter. Simulation and measurement of OFDM transmitter in presence of RF high power amplifier nonlinear distortion and the development of adaptive digital predistorters based on Hammerstein approach.
The objective of this research work is to investigate, design and measurement of a digital
predistortion linearizer that is able to compensate the dynamic nonlinear distortion of a High
Power Amplifier (PA). The effectiveness of the proposed baseband predistorter (PD) on the
performance of a WLAN OFDM transmitter utilizing a nonlinear PA with memory effect is
observed and discussed. For this purpose, a 10W Class-A/B power amplifier with a gain of 22
dB, operated over the 3.5 GHz frequency band was designed and implemented.
The proposed baseband PD is independent of the operating RF frequency and can be used in
multiband applications. Its operation is based on the Hammerstein system, taking into account
PA memory effect compensation, and demonstrates a noticeable improvement compared to
memoryless predistorters.
Different types of modelling procedures and linearizers were introduced and investigated, in
which accurate behavioural models of Radio Frequency (RF) PAs exhibiting linear and
nonlinear memory effects were presented and considered, based on the Wiener approach
employing a linear parametric estimation technique. Three new linear methods of parameter
estimation were investigated, with the aim of reducing the complexity of the required filtering
process in linear memory compensation. Moreover, an improved wiener model is represented to
include the nonlinear memory effect in the system. The validity of the PA modelling approaches
and predistortion techniques for compensation of nonlinearities of a PA were verified by several
tests and measurements. The approaches presented, based on the Wiener system, have the
capacity to deal with the existing trade-off between accuracy and convergence speed compared
to more computationally complex behavioural modelling algorithms considering memory
effects, such as those based on Volterra series and Neural Networks.
In addition, nonlinear and linear crosstalks introduced by the power amplifier nonlinear
behaviour and antennas mutual coupling due to the compact size of a MIMO OFDM transmitter
have been investigated
