Nonatobase: A Database For Polychaeta (annelida) From The Southwestern Atlantic Ocean.

Networks can greatly advance data sharing attitudes by providing organized and useful data sets on marine biodiversity in a friendly and shared scientific environment. NONATObase, the interactive database on polychaetes presented herein, will provide new macroecological and taxonomic insights of the Southwestern Atlantic region. The database was developed by the NONATO network, a team of South American researchers, who integrated available information on polychaetes from between 5°N and 80°S in the Atlantic Ocean and near the Antarctic. The guiding principle of the database is to keep free and open access to data based on partnerships. Its architecture consists of a relational database integrated in the MySQL and PHP framework. Its web application allows access to the data from three different directions: species (qualitative data), abundance (quantitative data) and data set (reference data). The database has built-in functionality, such as the filter of data on user-defined taxonomic levels, characteristics of site, sample, sampler, and mesh size used. Considering that there are still many taxonomic issues related to poorly known regional fauna, a scientific committee was created to work out consistent solutions to current misidentifications and equivocal taxonomy status of some species. Expertise from this committee will be incorporated by NONATObase continually. The use of quantitative data was possible by standardization of a sample unit. All data, maps of distribution and references from a data set or a specified query can be visualized and exported to a commonly used data format in statistical analysis or reference manager software. The NONATO network has initialized with NONATObase, a valuable resource for marine ecologists and taxonomists. The database is expected to grow in functionality as it comes in useful, particularly regarding the challenges of dealing with molecular genetic data and tools to assess the effects of global environment change. Lit dynamics of scientific publications in the field of national-patriotic education on the basis of the national abstracts database «Ukrainika scientific» for 1998-2015 years using bibliometric method. Implemented statistical distribution of the reflected monographs and dissertations by industry and research institutions. Revealed information on the most studied aspects of the issues and the planes that require further in-depth analysis

Make Research Data Public? -- Not Always so Simple: A Dialogue for Statisticians and Science Editors

Putting data into the public domain is not the same thing as making those data accessible for intelligent analysis. A distinguished group of editors and experts who were already engaged in one way or another with the issues inherent in making research data public came together with statisticians to initiate a dialogue about policies and practicalities of requiring published research to be accompanied by publication of the research data. This dialogue carried beyond the broad issues of the advisability, the intellectual integrity, the scientific exigencies to the relevance of these issues to statistics as a discipline and the relevance of statistics, from inference to modeling to data exploration, to science and social science policies on these issues.Comment: Published in at http://dx.doi.org/10.1214/10-STS320 the Statistical Science (http://www.imstat.org/sts/) by the Institute of Mathematical Statistics (http://www.imstat.org

Sparse cross-products of metadata in scientific simulation management

Managing scientific data is by no means a trivial task even in a single site environment with a small number of researchers involved. We discuss some issues concerned with posing well-specified experiments in terms of parameters or instrument settings and the metadata framework that arises from doing so. We are particularly interested in parallel computer simulation experiments, where very large quantities of warehouse-able data are involved. We consider SQL databases and other framework technologies for manipulating experimental data. Our framework manages the the outputs from parallel runs that arise from large cross-products of parameter combinations. Considerable useful experiment planning and analysis can be done with the sparse metadata without fully expanding the parameter cross-products. Extra value can be obtained from simulation output that can subsequently be data-mined. We have particular interests in running large scale Monte-Carlo physics model simulations. Finding ourselves overwhelmed by the problems of managing data and compute ¿resources, we have built a prototype tool using Java and MySQL that addresses these issues. We use this example to discuss type-space management and other fundamental ideas for implementing a laboratory information management system

Database about gender aspects of EMMA2 human resources

This document shows a statistical presentation of the “Database about gender aspects of EMMA22 human resources”. It will lead in a very clear way to the measured results of the gender aspects within EMMA22. Changing the gender role has to start by changing the whole education process in our society. Projects like EMMA2 can only support the gender independent policy but cannot change the gender aspects from the bottom

1st INCF Workshop on Sustainability of Neuroscience Databases

    Get PDF
The goal of the workshop was to discuss issues related to the sustainability of neuroscience databases, identify problems and propose solutions, and formulate recommendations to the INCF. The report summarizes the discussions of invited participants from the neuroinformatics community as well as from other disciplines where sustainability issues have already been approached. The recommendations for the INCF involve rating, ranking, and supporting database sustainability
