    Robust signatures for 3D face registration and recognition

    PhDBiometric authentication through face recognition has been an active area of research for the last few decades, motivated by its application-driven demand. The popularity of face recognition, compared to other biometric methods, is largely due to its minimum requirement of subject co-operation, relative ease of data capture and similarity to the natural way humans distinguish each other. 3D face recognition has recently received particular interest since three-dimensional face scans eliminate or reduce important limitations of 2D face images, such as illumination changes and pose variations. In fact, three-dimensional face scans are usually captured by scanners through the use of a constant structured-light source, making them invariant to environmental changes in illumination. Moreover, a single 3D scan also captures the entire face structure and allows for accurate pose normalisation. However, one of the biggest challenges that still remain in three-dimensional face scans is the sensitivity to large local deformations due to, for example, facial expressions. Due to the nature of the data, deformations bring about large changes in the 3D geometry of the scan. In addition to this, 3D scans are also characterised by noise and artefacts such as spikes and holes, which are uncommon with 2D images and requires a pre-processing stage that is speci c to the scanner used to capture the data. The aim of this thesis is to devise a face signature that is compact in size and overcomes the above mentioned limitations. We investigate the use of facial regions and landmarks towards a robust and compact face signature, and we study, implement and validate a region-based and a landmark-based face signature. Combinations of regions and landmarks are evaluated for their robustness to pose and expressions, while the matching scheme is evaluated for its robustness to noise and data artefacts

    Improving less constrained iris recognition

    The iris has been one of the most reliable biometric traits for automatic human authentication due to its highly stable and distinctive patterns. Traditional iris recognition algorithms have achieved remarkable performance in strictly constrained environments, with the subject standing still and with the iris captured at a close distance. This enables the wide deployment of iris recognition systems in applications such as border control and access control. However, in less constrained environments with the subject at-a-distance and on-the-move, the iris recognition performance is significantly deteriorated, since such environments induce noise and degradations in iris captures. This restricts the applicability and practicality of iris recognition technology for some real-world applications with more open capturing conditions, such as surveillance, forensic and mobile device security applications. Therefore, robust algorithms for less constrained iris recognition are desirable for the wider deployment of iris recognition systems. This thesis focuses on improving less constrained iris recognition. Five methods are proposed to improve the performance of different stages in less constrained iris recognition. First, a robust iris segmentation algorithm is developed using l1-norm regression and model selection. This algorithm formulates iris segmentation as robust l1-norm regression problems. To further enhance the robustness, multiple segmentation results are produced by applying l1-norm regression to different models, and a model selection technique is used to select the most reliable result. Second, an iris liveness detection method using regional features is investigated. This method seeks not only low level features, but also high level feature distributions for more accurate and robust iris liveness detection. Third, a signal-level information fusion algorithm is presented to mitigate the noise in less constrained iris captures. With multiple noisy iris captures, this algorithm proposes a sparse-error low rank matrix factorization model to separate noiseless iris structures and noise. The noiseless structures are preserved and emphasised during the fusion process, while the noise is suppressed, in order to obtain more reliable signals for recognition. Fourth, a method to generate optimal iris codes is proposed. This method considers iris code generation from the perspective of optimization. It formulates traditional iris code generation method as an optimization problem; an additional objective term modelling the spatial correlations in iris codes is applied to this optimization problem to produce more effective iris codes. Fifth, an iris weight map method is studied for robust iris matching. This method considers both intra-class bit stability and inter-class bit discriminability in iris codes. It emphasises highly stable and discriminative bits for iris matching, enhancing the robustness of iris matching. Comprehensive experimental analysis are performed on benchmark datasets for each of the above methods. The results indicate that the presented methods are effective for less constrained iris recognition, generally improving state-of-the-art performance

    Ridge orientation modeling and feature analysis for fingerprint identification

    This thesis systematically derives an innovative approach, called FOMFE, for fingerprint ridge orientation modeling based on 2D Fourier expansions, and explores possible applications of FOMFE to various aspects of a fingerprint identification system. Compared with existing proposals, FOMFE does not require prior knowledge of the landmark singular points (SP) at any stage of the modeling process. This salient feature makes it immune from false SP detections and robust in terms of modeling ridge topology patterns from different typological classes. The thesis provides the motivation of this work, thoroughly reviews the relevant literature, and carefully lays out the theoretical basis of the proposed modeling approach. This is followed by a detailed exposition of how FOMFE can benefit fingerprint feature analysis including ridge orientation estimation, singularity analysis, global feature characterization for a wide variety of fingerprint categories, and partial fingerprint identification. The proposed methods are based on the insightful use of theory from areas such as Fourier analysis of nonlinear dynamic systems, analytical operators from differential calculus in vector fields, and fluid dynamics. The thesis has conducted extensive experimental evaluation of the proposed methods on benchmark data sets, and drawn conclusions about strengths and limitations of these new techniques in comparison with state-of-the-art approaches. FOMFE and the resulting model-based methods can significantly improve the computational efficiency and reliability of fingerprint identification systems, which is important for indexing and matching fingerprints at a large scale

    Tensor Representations for Object Classification and Detection

    A key problem in object recognition is finding a suitable object representation. For historical and computational reasons, vector descriptions that encode particular statistical properties of the data have been broadly applied. However, employing tensor representation can describe the interactions of multiple factors inherent to image formation. One of the most convenient uses for tensors is to represent complex objects in order to build a discriminative description. Thus thesis has several main contributions, focusing on visual data detection (e.g. of heads or pedestrians) and classification (e.g. of head or human body orientation) in still images and on machine learning techniques to analyse tensor data. These applications are among the most studied in computer vision and are typically formulated as binary or multi-class classification problems. The applicative context of this thesis is the video surveillance, where classification and detection tasks can be very hard, due to the scarce resolution and the noise characterising sensor data. Therefore, the main goal in that context is to design algorithms that can characterise different objects of interest, especially when immersed in a cluttered background and captured at low resolution. In the different amount of machine learning approaches, the ensemble-of-classifiers demonstrated to reach excellent classification accuracy, good generalisation ability, and robustness of noisy data. For these reasons, some approaches in that class have been adopted as basic machine classification frameworks to build robust classifiers and detectors. Moreover, also kernel machines has been exploited for classification purposes, since they represent a natural learning framework for tensors

    Optimization of Operation Sequencing in CAPP Using Hybrid Genetic Algorithm and Simulated Annealing Approach

    In any CAPP system, one of the most important process planning functions is selection of the operations and corresponding machines in order to generate the optimal operation sequence. In this paper, the hybrid GA-SA algorithm is used to solve this combinatorial optimization NP (Non-deterministic Polynomial) problem. The network representation is adopted to describe operation and sequencing flexibility in process planning and the mathematical model for process planning is described with the objective of minimizing the production time. Experimental results show effectiveness of the hybrid algorithm that, in comparison with the GA and SA standalone algorithms, gives optimal operation sequence with lesser computational time and lesser number of iterations
