    Filter Design and Applications in Image Improvement

    This work presents the performance analysis of different basic techniques used for the image restoration. Restoration is a process by which an image suffering from degradation can be recovered to its original form. Removing the noise from the image is the scope of this work. The work implemented different techniques of image enhancement and noise removal. The degraded images have been restored by the use of different mathematical filters. A new approach using MATLAB software was designed to improve the image and suppress the noise. The code was executed to eliminate the image degradation and avoid the loss of information. The use of the code enables easy extraction of data from the images

    Geometric nonlinear diffusion filter and its application to X-ray imaging

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Denoising with edge preservation is very important in digital x-ray imaging since it may allow us to reduce x-ray dose in human subjects without noticeable degradation of the image quality. In denoising filter design for x-ray imaging, edge preservation as well as noise reduction is of great concern not to lose detailed spatial information for accurate diagnosis. In addition to this, fast computation is also important since digital x-ray images are mostly comprised of large sized matrices.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>We have developed a new denoising filter based on the nonlinear diffusion filter model. Rather than employing four directional gradients around the pixel of interest, we use geometric parameters derived from the local pixel intensity distribution in calculating the diffusion coefficients in the horizontal and vertical directions. We have tested the filter performance, including edge preservation and noise reduction, using low dose digital radiography and micro-CT images.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>The proposed denoising filter shows performance similar to those of nonlinear anisotropic diffusion filters (ADFs), one Perona-Malik ADF and the other Weickert's ADF in terms of edge preservation and noise reduction. However, the computation time has been greatly reduced.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>We expect the proposed denoising filter can be greatly used for fast noise reduction particularly in low-dose x-ray imaging.</p

    Portal Imaging Using a CSI (TL) Scintillator Coupled to a Cooled CCD Camera

    The purpose of this research was to design a high performance digital portal imaging system, using a transparent x-ray scintillator coupled to a cooled CCD camera. Theoretical analysis using Monte Carlo simulation was performed to calculate the QDE, SNR and DQE of the system. A prototype electronic portal imaging device (EPID) was built, using a 12.7 mm thick, 20.32 cm diameter, CsI (Tl) scintillator, coupled to an Astromed ÂŪ liquid nitrogen cooled CCD TV camera. The system geometry of the prototype EPID was optimized to achieve high spatial resolution. Experimental evaluation of the prototype EPID was performed, by determining its spatial resolution, contrast resolution, depth of focus and light scatter. Images of phantoms, animals and human subjects were acquired using the prototype EPID and were compared with those obtained using conventional and high contrast portal film and a commercial EPID. An image processing protocol was developed. The protocol was comprised of preprocessing, noise removal and image enhancement algorithms. An adaptive median filter algorithm for the removal of impulse noise was developed, analyzed and incorporated into the image processing protocol. Results from the theoretical analysis and experimental evaluation have indicated that the performance of the CsI (Tl) - CCD system is comparable or superior to that of current commercial and experimental portal imaging technologies, such as high contrast portal film, commercial TV camera based EPIDs, and amorphous silicon based flat panel EPIDs
