    Model based control strategies for a class of nonlinear mechanical sub-systems

    This paper presents a comparison between various control strategies for a class of mechanical actuators common in heavy-duty industry. Typical actuator components are hydraulic or pneumatic elements with static non-linearities, which are commonly referred to as Hammerstein systems. Such static non-linearities may vary in time as a function of the load and hence classical inverse-model based control strategies may deliver sub-optimal performance. This paper investigates the ability of advanced model based control strategies to satisfy a tolerance interval for position error values, overshoot and settling time specifications. Due to the presence of static non-linearity requiring changing direction of movement, control effort is also evaluated in terms of zero crossing frequency (up-down or left-right movement). Simulation and experimental data from a lab setup suggest that sliding mode control is able to improve global performance parameters

    Iterative nonlinear model predictive control of a PH reactor. A comparative analysis

    IFAC WORLD CONGRESS (16) (16.2005.PRAGA, REPÚBLICA CHECA)This paper describes the control of a batch pH reactor by a nonlinear predictive controller that improves performance by using data of past batches. The control strategy combines the feedback features of a nonlinear predictive controller with the learning capabilities of run-to-run control. The inclusion of real-time data collected during the on-going batch run in addition to those from the past runs make the control strategy capable not only of eliminating repeated errors but also of responding to new disturbances that occur during the run. The paper uses these ideas to devise an integrated controller that increases the capabilities of Nonlinear Model Predictive Control (NMPC) with batch-wise learning. This controller tries to improve existing strategies by the use of a nonlinear controller devised along the last-run trajectory as well as by the inclusion of filters. A comparison with a similar controller based upon a linear model is performed. Simulation results are presented in order to illustrate performance improvements that can be achieved by the new method over the conventional iterative controllers. Although the controller is designed for discrete-time systems, it can be applied to stable continuous plants after discretization

    The Estimation and Control of a Laboratory Heating and Ventilation System

    This dissertation is concerned with the estimation and control of a laboratory heating and ventilation system (Instrutek VVS-400). The system is a 2x2 multi-input multi-output process (MIMO). It has been shown that simple techniques such as the ultimate cycle method do not provide adequate control of the process. The system was interfaced with a PC using Matlab/Simulink via a data acquisition package (Humusoft). Continuous time process identification techniques were applied to the flow and temperature processes. The alternative tangent and point method was used to model the processes, and their interaction, using a first order lag plus delay model. Models were obtained for a range of operating conditions. The accuracy of the flow and temperature measurement transducers were investigated ¾ some inaccuracies were determined. Tests revealed that both processes were continuously non-linear. This pointed toward adaptive control as appropriate. PI/PID controllers were used because both processes displayed a low time delay to time constant ratio. Tuning rules were selected on the basis of minimising the integral of absolute error. A strong interaction effect between the output temperature and input flow rate was reduced considerably using a static decoupler. A gain scheduler was designed, using look-up tables, to continuously interpolate for the most suitable controller settings and decoupler gain, as process operating conditions varied. The design was compared to an average model controller. Validation tests showed that the overall difference in performance was slim. It was concluded that discrete time identification methods would yield more appealing results for the gain scheduler, and that the design could be applied to other MIMO processes with relative ease

    An investigation of multibody system modelling and control analysis techniques for the development of advanced suspension systems in passenger cars

    The subject of this thesis is the investigation of multibody system modelling and control analysis techniques for the development of advanced suspension systems in passenger cars. A review of the application of automatic control to all areas of automotive vehicles illustrated the important factors in such developments, including motivating influences, constraints and methodologies used. A further review of specific applications for advanced suspension systems highlighted a major discrepancy between the significant claims of theoretical performance benefits and the scarcity of successful practical implementations. This discrepancy was the result of idealistic analytical studies producing unrealistic solutions with little regard for practical constraints. The predominant application of prototype testing methods in implementation studies also resulted in reduced potential performance improvements. This work addressed this gap by the application of realistic modelling and control design techniques to practical realistic suspension systems. Multibody system modelling techniques were used to develop vehicle models incorporating realistic representations of the suspension system itself, with the ability to include models of the controllers, and facilitate control analysis tasks. These models were first used to address ride control for fully active suspension systems. Both state space techniques, including linear quadratic regulator and pole placement and frequency domain design methods were applied. For the multivariable frequency domain study, dyadic expansion techniques were used to decouple the system into single input single output systems representing each of the sprung mass modes. Both discretely and continuously variable damping systems were then addressed with a range of control strategies, including analytical solutions based on the active results and heuristic rule-based approaches. The controllers based on active solutions were reduced to satisfy realistic practical limitations of the achievable damping force. The heuristic techniques included standard rule-based controllers using Boolean logic for the discretely variable case, and fuzzy logic controllers for the continuously variable case

First of all, we recall several important algorithms suitable for gain-scheduling method including gain-scheduled proportional-integral derivative (PID) control, H 2, H ∞ and mixed H 2 / H ∞ gain-scheduling methods as well as fuzzy gain-scheduling techniques. Secondly, various important parameter-varying system models are reviewed, for which gain-scheduled control and filtering issues are usually dealt with. In particular, in view of the randomly occurring phenomena with time-varying probability distributions, some results of our recent work based on the probability-dependent gain-scheduling methods are reviewed. Furthermore, some latest progress in this area is discussed.     Hybrid modeling and control of mechatronic systems using a piecewise affine dynamics approach

    This thesis investigates the topic of modeling and control of PWA systems based on two experimental cases of an electrical and hydraulic nature with varying complexity that were also built, instrumented and evaluated. A full-order model has been created for both systems, including all dominant system dynamics and non-linearities. The unknown parameters and characteristics have been identi ed via an extensive parameter identi cation. In the following, the non-linear characteristics are linearized at several points, resulting in PWA models for each respective setup. Regarding the closed loop control of the generated models and corresponding experimental setups, a linear control structure comprised of integral error, feed-forward and state-feedback control has been used. Additionally, the hydraulic setup has been controlled in an autonomous hybrid position/force control mode, resulting in a switched system with each mode's dynamics being de ned by the previously derived PWA-based model in combination with the control structure and respective mode-dependent controller gains. The autonomous switch between control modes has been de ned by a switching event capable of consistently switching between modes in a deterministic manner despite the noise-a icted measurements. Several methods were used to obtain suitable controller gains, including optimization routines and pole placement. Validation of the system's fast and accurate response was obtained through simulations and experimental evaluation. The controlled system's local stability was proven for regions in state-space associated with operational points by using pole-zero analysis. The stability of the hybrid control approach was proven by using multiple Lyapunov functions for the investigated test scenarios.publishedVersio

    Demonstration of a Balloon Borne Arc-Second Pointer Design

    Many designs for utilizing stratospheric balloons as low-cost platforms on which to conduct space science experiments have been proposed throughout the years. A major hurdle in extending the range of experiments for which these vehicles are useful has been the imposition of the gondola dynamics on the accuracy with which an instrument can be kept pointed at a celestial target. A significant number of scientists have sought the ability to point their instruments with jitter in the arc-second range. This paper presents the design and analysis of a stratospheric balloon borne pointing system that is able to meet this requirement. The test results of a demonstration prototype of the design with similar ability are also presented. Discussion of a high fidelity controller simulation for design analysis is presented. The flexibility of the flight train is represented through generalized modal analysis. A multiple controller scheme is utilized for coarse and fine pointing. Coarse azimuth pointing is accomplished by an established pointing system, with extensive flight history, residing above the gondola structure. A pitch-yaw gimbal mount is used for fine pointing, providing orthogonal axes when nominally on target. Fine pointing actuation is from direct drive dc motors, eliminating backlash problems. An analysis of friction nonlinearities and a demonstration of the necessity in eliminating static friction are provided. A unique bearing hub design is introduced that eliminates static friction from the system dynamics. A control scheme involving linear accelerometers for enhanced disturbance rejection is also presented. Results from a linear analysis of the total system and the high fidelity simulation are given. Results from a generalized demonstration prototype are presented. Commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) hardware was used to demonstrate the efficacy and performance of the pointer design for a mock instrument. Sub-arcsecond pointing ability from a ground hang test setup is shown from the testing results. This paper establishes that the proposed control strategy can be made robustly stable with significant design margins. Also demonstrated is the efficacy of the proposed system in rejecting disturbances larger than those considered realistic. The system is implemented and demonstrates sub arc second pointing ability using COTS hardware. Finally, we see that sub arc-second pointing stability can be achieved for a large instrument pointing at an inertial target
