Fluid-driven deformation of a soft granular material
Compressing a porous, fluid-filled material will drive the interstitial fluid
out of the pore space, as when squeezing water out of a kitchen sponge.
Inversely, injecting fluid into a porous material can deform the solid
structure, as when fracturing a shale for natural gas recovery. These
poromechanical interactions play an important role in geological and biological
systems across a wide range of scales, from the propagation of magma through
the Earth's mantle to the transport of fluid through living cells and tissues.
The theory of poroelasticity has been largely successful in modeling
poromechanical behavior in relatively simple systems, but this continuum theory
is fundamentally limited by our understanding of the pore-scale interactions
between the fluid and the solid, and these problems are notoriously difficult
to study in a laboratory setting. Here, we present a high-resolution
measurement of injection-driven poromechanical deformation in a system with
granular microsctructure: We inject fluid into a dense, confined monolayer of
soft particles and use particle tracking to reveal the dynamics of the
multi-scale deformation field. We find that a continuum model based on
poroelasticity theory captures certain macroscopic features of the deformation,
but the particle-scale deformation field exhibits dramatic departures from
smooth, continuum behavior. We observe particle-scale rearrangement and
hysteresis, as well as petal-like mesoscale structures that are connected to
material failure through spiral shear banding
Online VNF Scaling in Datacenters
Network Function Virtualization (NFV) is a promising technology that promises
to significantly reduce the operational costs of network services by deploying
virtualized network functions (VNFs) to commodity servers in place of dedicated
hardware middleboxes. The VNFs are typically running on virtual machine
instances in a cloud infrastructure, where the virtualization technology
enables dynamic provisioning of VNF instances, to process the fluctuating
traffic that needs to go through the network functions in a network service. In
this paper, we target dynamic provisioning of enterprise network services -
expressed as one or multiple service chains - in cloud datacenters, and design
efficient online algorithms without requiring any information on future traffic
rates. The key is to decide the number of instances of each VNF type to
provision at each time, taking into consideration the server resource
capacities and traffic rates between adjacent VNFs in a service chain. In the
case of a single service chain, we discover an elegant structure of the problem
and design an efficient randomized algorithm achieving a e/(e-1) competitive
ratio. For multiple concurrent service chains, an online heuristic algorithm is
proposed, which is O(1)-competitive. We demonstrate the effectiveness of our
algorithms using solid theoretical analysis and trace-driven simulations.Comment: 9 pages, 4 figure
VIRTUALIZED BASEBAND UNITS CONSOLIDATION IN ADVANCED LTE NETWORKS USING MOBILITY- AND POWER-AWARE ALGORITHMS
Virtualization of baseband units in Advanced Long-Term Evolution networks and a rapid performance growth of general purpose processors naturally raise the interest in resource multiplexing. The concept of resource sharing and management between virtualized instances is not new and extensively used in data centers. We adopt some of the resource management techniques to organize virtualized baseband units on a pool of hosts and investigate the behavior of the system in order to identify features which are particularly relevant to mobile environment. Subsequently, we introduce our own resource management algorithm specifically targeted to address some of the peculiarities identified by experimental results

Survey on Combinatorial Register Allocation and Instruction Scheduling
Register allocation (mapping variables to processor registers or memory) and
instruction scheduling (reordering instructions to increase instruction-level
parallelism) are essential tasks for generating efficient assembly code in a
compiler. In the last three decades, combinatorial optimization has emerged as
an alternative to traditional, heuristic algorithms for these two tasks.
Combinatorial optimization approaches can deliver optimal solutions according
to a model, can precisely capture trade-offs between conflicting decisions, and
are more flexible at the expense of increased compilation time.
This paper provides an exhaustive literature review and a classification of
combinatorial optimization approaches to register allocation and instruction
scheduling, with a focus on the techniques that are most applied in this
context: integer programming, constraint programming, partitioned Boolean
quadratic programming, and enumeration. Researchers in compilers and
combinatorial optimization can benefit from identifying developments, trends,
and challenges in the area; compiler practitioners may discern opportunities
and grasp the potential benefit of applying combinatorial optimization
Performance-oriented Cloud Provisioning: Taxonomy and Survey
Cloud computing is being viewed as the technology of today and the future.
Through this paradigm, the customers gain access to shared computing resources
located in remote data centers that are hosted by cloud providers (CP). This
technology allows for provisioning of various resources such as virtual
machines (VM), physical machines, processors, memory, network, storage and
software as per the needs of customers. Application providers (AP), who are
customers of the CP, deploy applications on the cloud infrastructure and then
these applications are used by the end-users. To meet the fluctuating
application workload demands, dynamic provisioning is essential and this
article provides a detailed literature survey of dynamic provisioning within
cloud systems with focus on application performance. The well-known types of
provisioning and the associated problems are clearly and pictorially explained
and the provisioning terminology is clarified. A very detailed and general
cloud provisioning classification is presented, which views provisioning from
different perspectives, aiding in understanding the process inside-out. Cloud
dynamic provisioning is explained by considering resources, stakeholders,
techniques, technologies, algorithms, problems, goals and more.Comment: 14 pages, 3 figures, 3 table
