    Performability evaluation of the SIFT computer

    Performability modeling and evaluation techniques are applied to the SIFT computer as it might operate in the computational evironment of an air transport mission. User-visible performance of the total system (SIFT plus its environment) is modeled as a random variable taking values in a set of levels of accomplishment. These levels are defined in terms of four attributes of total system behavior: safety, no change in mission profile, no operational penalties, and no economic process whose states describe the internal structure of SIFT as well as relavant conditions of the environment. Base model state trajectories are related to accomplishment levels via a capability function which is formulated in terms of a 3-level model hierarchy. Performability evaluation algorithms are then applied to determine the performability of the total system for various choices of computer and environment parameter values. Numerical results of those evaluations are presented and, in conclusion, some implications of this effort are discussed

Emphasis is on the representation of architectural features in mathematical models. Details of the mathematical solution of complex reliability models are not presented. Instead the use of several recently developed computer programs--SURE, ASSIST, STEM, PAWS--which automate the generation and solution of these models is described

    A formalism for describing and simulating systems with interacting components.

    This thesis addresses the problem of descriptive complexity presented by systems involving a high number of interacting components. It investigates the evaluation measure of performability and its application to such systems. A new description and simulation language, ICE and it's application to performability modelling is presented. ICE (Interacting ComponEnts) is based upon an earlier description language which was first proposed for defining reliability problems. ICE is declarative in style and has a limited number of keywords. The ethos in the development of the language has been to provide an intuitive formalism with a powerful descriptive space. The full syntax of the language is presented with discussion as to its philosophy. The implementation of a discrete event simulator using an ICE interface is described, with use being made of examples to illustrate the functionality of the code and the semantics of the language. Random numbers are used to provide the required stochastic behaviour within the simulator. The behaviour of an industry standard generator within the simulator and different methods of number allocation are shown. A new generator is proposed that is a development of a fast hardware shift register generator and is demonstrated to possess good statistical properties and operational speed. For the purpose of providing a rigorous description of the language and clarification of its semantics, a computational model is developed using the formalism of extended coloured Petri nets. This model also gives an indication of the language's descriptive power relative to that of a recognised and well developed technique. Some recognised temporal and structural problems of system event modelling are identified. and ICE solutions given. The growing research area of ATM communication networks is introduced and a sophisticated top down model of an ATM switch presented. This model is simulated and interesting results are given. A generic ICE framework for performability modelling is developed and demonstrated. This is considered as a positive contribution to the general field of performability research

    Performability: a retrospective and some pointers to the future

    As computing and communication systems become physically and logically more complex, their evaluation calls for continued innovation with regard to measure definition, model construction/solution, and tool development. In particular, the performance of such systems is often degradable, i.e., internal or external faults can reduce the quality of a delivered service even though that service, according to its specification, remains proper (failure-free). The need to accommodate this property, using model-based evaluation methods, was the raison d'etre for the concept of performability. To set the stage for additional progress in its development, we present a retrospective of associated theory, techniques, and applications resulting from work in this area over the past decade and a half.     Runtime Management of Multiprocessor Systems for Fault Tolerance, Energy Efficiency and Load Balancing

    Efficiency of modern multiprocessor systems is hurt by unpredictable events: aging causes permanent faults that disable components; application spawnings and terminations taking place at arbitrary times, affect energy proportionality, causing energy waste; load imbalances reduce resource utilization, penalizing performance. This thesis demonstrates how runtime management can mitigate the negative effects of unpredictable events, making decisions guided by a combination of static information known in advance and parameters that only become known at runtime. We propose techniques for three different objectives: graceful degradation of aging-prone systems; energy efficiency of heterogeneous adaptive systems; and load balancing by means of work stealing. Managing aging-prone systems for graceful efficiency degradation, is based on a high-level system description that encapsulates hardware reconfigurability and workload flexibility and allows to quantify system efficiency and use it as an objective function. Different custom heuristics, as well as simulated annealing and a genetic algorithm are proposed to optimize this objective function as a response to component failures. Custom heuristics are one to two orders of magnitude faster, provide better efficiency for the first 20% of system lifetime and are less than 13% worse than a genetic algorithm at the end of this lifetime. Custom heuristics occasionally fail to satisfy reconfiguration cost constraints. As all algorithms\u27 execution time scales well with respect to system size, a genetic algorithm can be used as backup in these cases. Managing heterogeneous multiprocessors capable of Dynamic Voltage and Frequency Scaling is based on a model that accurately predicts performance and power: performance is predicted by combining static, application-specific profiling information and dynamic, runtime performance monitoring data; power is predicted using the aforementioned performance estimations and a set of platform-specific, static parameters, determined only once and used for every application mix. Three runtime heuristics are proposed, that make use of this model to perform partial search of the configuration space, evaluating a small set of configurations and selecting the best one. When best-effort performance is adequate, the proposed approach achieves 3% higher energy efficiency compared to the powersave governor and 2x better compared to the interactive and ondemand governors. When individual applications\u27 performance requirements are considered, the proposed approach is able to satisfy them, giving away 18% of system\u27s energy efficiency compared to the powersave, which however misses the performance targets by 23%; at the same time, the proposed approach maintains an efficiency advantage of about 55% compared to the other governors, which also satisfy the requirements. Lastly, to improve load balancing of multiprocessors, a partial and approximate view of the current load distribution among system cores is proposed, which consists of lightweight data structures and is maintained by each core through cheap operations. A runtime algorithm is developed, using this view whenever a core becomes idle, to perform victim core selection for work stealing, also considering system topology and memory hierarchy. Among 12 diverse imbalanced workloads, the proposed approach achieves better performance than random, hierarchical and local stealing for six workloads. Furthermore, it is at most 8% slower among the other six workloads, while competing strategies incur a penalty of at least 89% on some workload

    Integration of tools for the Design and Assessment of High-Performance, Highly Reliable Computing Systems (DAHPHRS), phase 1

    Systems for Space Defense Initiative (SDI) space applications typically require both high performance and very high reliability. These requirements present the systems engineer evaluating such systems with the extremely difficult problem of conducting performance and reliability trade-offs over large design spaces. A controlled development process supported by appropriate automated tools must be used to assure that the system will meet design objectives. This report describes an investigation of methods, tools, and techniques necessary to support performance and reliability modeling for SDI systems development. Models of the JPL Hypercubes, the Encore Multimax, and the C.S. Draper Lab Fault-Tolerant Parallel Processor (FTPP) parallel-computing architectures using candidate SDI weapons-to-target assignment algorithms as workloads were built and analyzed as a means of identifying the necessary system models, how the models interact, and what experiments and analyses should be performed. As a result of this effort, weaknesses in the existing methods and tools were revealed and capabilities that will be required for both individual tools and an integrated toolset were identified
