©Journal of Professional Communication, ISSN: 1920-685. All rights reservedThis article uses case studies to explore two ways in which technology can impact on artist production. First, technological innovations could facilitate many things that are not new by rather making existing processes better or cheaper in ways that might alter the situation meaningfully. Second, technology can change art through the more profound revision of the role of artist and art-perceiver (Fineberg, 2006). This article examines several examples of how the music industry has been impacted by new technology: Radiohead Rainbows, slicethepie.com, Ditto Music, Music Rainbow, YouTube Orchestra, micro-chunking and LiveFi. The article examines the impact of new technologies on classical music.Peer reviewe

“Breakfast Serialism” for laptop orchestra and improvisers: A study on twelve-tone indeterminacy using computer mediation

This paper presents the concepts developed for my piece “Breakfast Serialism”, for laptop orchestra and improvisers. This piece introduces several conceptual and technical aspects made possible by the use of computer mediation using network communication between the conductor and the performers. The piece is intended as a study on some of the technical and musical potential of the networked laptop orchestra. It is divided in six sections, each one exploring different musical possibilities for the application of the computer as a mediator, that ‘listens’ to all the events from the ensemble, and algorithmically adapts the pitch and dynamic possibilities using custom software developed in the Max/MSP programming environment. The concepts and technical aspects will be described, as well as an insight to the background and some of the specific points of interest and concerns in electronic music ensembles, reflecting a conviction that laptop ensembles present vastly rich, unique and underexplored compositional possibilities. This piece was composed for the ‘EME – ESART Electroacoustic Music Ensemble’, of the School of Applied Arts of the Polytechnic Institute of Castelo Branco, with my students from the Electronic Music and Musical Production course, and guest instrument students with experience in free improvisation. It was premiered in the “Serralves em Festa” music festival, in June 1st 2014, at the library of the Serralves Foundation, Porto

BOEUF: A Unified Framework for Modeling and Designing Digital Orchestras

International audienceOrchestras of Digital Musical Instruments (DMIs) enable new musical collaboration possibilities, extending those of acoustic and electric orchestras. However the creation and development of these orchestras remain constrained. In fact, each new musical collaboration system or orchestra piece relies on a fixed number of musicians, a fixed set of instruments (often only one), and a fixed subset of possible modes of collaboration. In this paper, we describe a unified framework that enables the design of Digital Orchestras with potentially different DMIs and an expand-able set of collaboration modes. It relies on research done on analysis and classification of traditional and digital orchestras, on research in Collaborative Virtual Environments, and on interviews of musicians and composers. The BOEUF framework consists of a classification of modes of collaboration and a set of components for modelling digital orchestras. Integrating this framework into DMIs will enable advanced musical collaboration modes to be used in any digital orchestra, including spontaneous jam sessions

This thesis work contemplates the development a suite of Pure Data tools, as well as their integration into mobile applications via libPD, as part of a larger project encompassing the design and implementation of a system allowing for interaction between performer and audience via smartphones. The "Bridging the gap between performers and the audience using networked smartphones" project, henceforth referenced in this document by its working name - "Abel", aims to provide artists with a way to easily interact with their audience, making use of their input to effectively craft unique performances. This toolset consists of a series of custom-built Pure Data externals developed in C, accompanied with corresponding helper patches to illustrate their use. Using the developed suite, multimedia artists can easily create and distribute interactive content unto mobile devices by means of this networked system, without any additional expertise other than normal Pure Data content creation, providing them with a familiar and immediate way of using this system

Designing and Composing for Interdependent Collaborative Performance with Physics-Based Virtual Instruments

    Get PDF
Interdependent collaboration is a system of live musical performance in which performers can directly manipulate each other’s musical outcomes. While most collaborative musical systems implement electronic communication channels between players that allow for parameter mappings, remote transmissions of actions and intentions, or exchanges of musical fragments, they interrupt the energy continuum between gesture and sound, breaking our cognitive representation of gesture to sound dynamics. Physics-based virtual instruments allow for acoustically and physically plausible behaviors that are related to (and can be extended beyond) our experience of the physical world. They inherently maintain and respect a representation of the gesture to sound energy continuum. This research explores the design and implementation of custom physics-based virtual instruments for realtime interdependent collaborative performance. It leverages the inherently physically plausible behaviors of physics-based models to create dynamic, nuanced, and expressive interconnections between performers. Design considerations, criteria, and frameworks are distilled from the literature in order to develop three new physics-based virtual instruments and associated compositions intended for dissemination and live performance by the electronic music and instrumental music communities. Conceptual, technical, and artistic details and challenges are described, and reflections and evaluations by the composer-designer and performers are documented
