Satellite Navigation for the Age of Autonomy
Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS) brought navigation to the masses.
Coupled with smartphones, the blue dot in the palm of our hands has forever
changed the way we interact with the world. Looking forward, cyber-physical
systems such as self-driving cars and aerial mobility are pushing the limits of
what localization technologies including GNSS can provide. This autonomous
revolution requires a solution that supports safety-critical operation,
centimeter positioning, and cyber-security for millions of users. To meet these
demands, we propose a navigation service from Low Earth Orbiting (LEO)
satellites which deliver precision in-part through faster motion, higher power
signals for added robustness to interference, constellation autonomous
integrity monitoring for integrity, and encryption / authentication for
resistance to spoofing attacks. This paradigm is enabled by the 'New Space'
movement, where highly capable satellites and components are now built on
assembly lines and launch costs have decreased by more than tenfold. Such a
ubiquitous positioning service enables a consistent and secure standard where
trustworthy information can be validated and shared, extending the electronic
horizon from sensor line of sight to an entire city. This enables the
situational awareness needed for true safe operation to support autonomy at

Geocoding health data with Geographic Information Systems: a pilot study in northeast Italy for developing a standardized data-acquiring format
Introduction. Geographic Information Systems (GIS) have
become an innovative and somewhat crucial tool for analyzing
relationships between public health data and environment. This
study, though focusing on a Local Health Unit of northeastern
Italy, could be taken as a benchmark for developing a standardized
national data-acquiring format, providing a step-by-step
instructions on the manipulation of address elements specific for
Italian language and traditions.
Methods. Geocoding analysis was carried out on a health database
comprising 268,517 records of the Local Health Unit of
Rovigo in the Veneto region, covering a period of 10 years, starting
from 2001 up to 2010. The Map Service provided by the Environmental
Research System Institute (ESRI, Redlands, CA), and
ArcMap 10.0 by ESRI\uae were, respectively, the reference data and
the GIS software, employed in the geocoding process.
Results. The first attempt of geocoding produced a poor quality
result, having about 40% of the addresses matched. A procedure
of manual standardization was performed in order to enhance the
quality of the results, consequently a set of guiding principle were
expounded which should be pursued for geocoding health data.
High-level geocoding detail will provide a more precise geographic
representation of health related events.
Conclusions. The main achievement of this study was to outline
some of the difficulties encountered during the geocoding of
health data and to put forward a set of guidelines, which could
be useful to facilitate the process and enhance the quality of the
results. Public health informatics represents an emerging specialty
that highlights on the application of information science
and technology to public health practice and research. Therefore,
this study could draw the attention of the National Health Service
to the underestimated problem of geocoding accuracy in health
related data for environmental risk assessment
Spatial patterns of knowledge-intensive business services in cities of various sizes, morphologies and economies
We compare intra-urban localization patterns of advertising and IT companies in three large Czech cities. The main aim of our analysis is an empirically-based contribution to the question to what extent do knowledge bases affect the spatial distribution of various knowledge-intensive business industries. The central research question is: To what extent is the localization of these two industries influenced by different modes of innovation/knowledge bases (symbolic vs. synthetic) and to what extent by contextual factors, such as urban size, morphology, position in the urban hierarchy and economic profile of the given city. We found that the urban contexts shape the localization patterns of advertising and IT companies more than differences in knowledge bases-both industries cluster primarily in the inner cities and urban cores. A few years ago, globalization was the new paradigm in international business, however from a branding perspective it has lost its initial efficiency giving the fact that consumers do not seem to feel a connection anymore with the standardized products of global corporations, catered to them in mass marketing communication programs. With their centralized decision making, most companies simply stopped having a connection with the new global marketplace and neglected its emergence. Visual Localisation of Mobile Devices in an Indoor Environment under Network Delay Conditions
Current progresses in home automation and service robotic environment have
highlighted the need to develop interoperability mechanisms that allow a
standard communication between the two systems. During the development of the
DHCompliant protocol, the problem of locating mobile devices in an indoor
environment has been investigated. The communication of the device with the
location service has been carried out to study the time delay that web services
offer in front of the sockets. The importance of obtaining data from real-time
location systems portends that a basic tool for interoperability, such as web
services, can be ineffective in this scenario because of the delays added in
the invocation of services. This paper is focused on introducing a web service
to resolve a coordinates request without any significant delay in comparison
with the sockets
Supporting Cyber-Physical Systems with Wireless Sensor Networks: An Outlook of Software and Services
Sensing, communication, computation and control technologies are the essential building blocks of a cyber-physical system (CPS). Wireless sensor networks (WSNs) are a way to support CPS as they provide fine-grained spatial-temporal sensing, communication and computation at a low premium of cost and power. In this article, we explore the fundamental concepts guiding the design and implementation of WSNs. We report the latest developments in WSN software and services for meeting existing requirements and newer demands; particularly in the areas of: operating system, simulator and emulator, programming abstraction, virtualization, IP-based communication and security, time and location, and network monitoring and management. We also reflect on the ongoing
efforts in providing dependable assurances for WSN-driven CPS. Finally, we report on its applicability with a case-study on smart buildings
Investment decision and the spatial dimension : Evidence from firm level data
This paper proposes to investigate the effect of spillovers on location decision of firms. We develop an analysis merging the geographer toolbox with the standard econometric techniques. For a chosen sample of sectors, through the spatial data analysis, we test the existence of positive spatial autocorrelation for R&D investments that lead R&D expenditure to cluster. Moreover, we succeed in detecting how far the local environment may influence the firm decisions in R&D investments. Data confirm tha tthe proximity to other firms investing in R&D may produce positive externalities. Interrater reliability in visual identification of interictal high-frequency oscillations on electrocorticography and scalp EEG.
High-frequency oscillations (HFOs), including ripples (Rs) and fast ripples (FRs), are promising biomarkers of epileptogenesis, but their clinical utility is limited by the lack of a standardized approach to identification. We set out to determine whether electroencephalographers experienced in HFO analysis can reliably identify and quantify interictal HFOs. Two blinded raters independently reviewed 10 intraoperative electrocorticography (ECoG) samples from epilepsy surgery cases, and 10 scalp EEG samples from epilepsy monitoring unit evaluations. HFOs were visually marked using bandpass filters (R, 80-250 Hz; FR, 250-500 Hz) with a sampling frequency of 2,000 Hz. There was agreement as to the presence or absence of epileptiform discharges (EDs), Rs, and FRs, in 17, 18, and 18 cases, respectively. Interrater reliability (IRR) was favorable with κ = 0.70, 0.80, and 0.80, respectively, and similar for ECoG and scalp electroencephalography (EEG). Furthermore, interclass correlation for rates of Rs (0.99, 95% confidence interval [CI] 0.96-0.99) and FRs (0.77, 95% CI 0.41-0.91) were superior in comparison to EDs (0.37, 95% CI -0.60 to 0.75). Our data suggest that HFO identification and quantification are reliable among experienced electroencephalographers.
