    Medical imaging analysis with artificial neural networks

    Given that neural networks have been widely reported in the research community of medical imaging, we provide a focused literature survey on recent neural network developments in computer-aided diagnosis, medical image segmentation and edge detection towards visual content analysis, and medical image registration for its pre-processing and post-processing, with the aims of increasing awareness of how neural networks can be applied to these areas and to provide a foundation for further research and practical development. Representative techniques and algorithms are explained in detail to provide inspiring examples illustrating: (i) how a known neural network with fixed structure and training procedure could be applied to resolve a medical imaging problem; (ii) how medical images could be analysed, processed, and characterised by neural networks; and (iii) how neural networks could be expanded further to resolve problems relevant to medical imaging. In the concluding section, a highlight of comparisons among many neural network applications is included to provide a global view on computational intelligence with neural networks in medical imaging

    Exemplars as a least-committed alternative to dual-representations in learning and memory

    Despite some notable counterexamples, the theoretical and empirical exchange between the fields of learning and memory is limited. In an attempt to promote further theoretical exchange, I explored how learning and memory may be conceptualized as distinct algorithms that operate on a the same representations of past experiences. I review representational and process assumptions in learning and memory, by the example of evaluative conditioning and false recognition, and identified important similarities in the theoretical debates. Based on my review, I identify global matching memory models and their exemplar representation as a promising candidate for a common representational substrate that satisfies the principle of least commitment. I then present two cases in which exemplar-based global matching models, which take characteristics of the stimulus material and context into account, suggest parsimonious explanations for empirical dissociations in evaluative conditioning and false recognition in long-term memory. These explanations suggest reinterpretations of findings that are commonly taken as evidence for dual-representation models. Finally, I report the same approach provides also provides a natural unitary account of false recognition in short-term memory, a finding which challenges the assumption that short-term memory is insulated from long-term memory. Taken together, this work illustrates the broad explanatory scope and the integrative and yet parsimonious potential of exemplar-based global matching models

    Consciosusness in Cognitive Architectures. A Principled Analysis of RCS, Soar and ACT-R

    This report analyses the aplicability of the principles of consciousness developed in the ASys project to three of the most relevant cognitive architectures. This is done in relation to their aplicability to build integrated control systems and studying their support for general mechanisms of real-time consciousness.\ud To analyse these architectures the ASys Framework is employed. This is a conceptual framework based on an extension for cognitive autonomous systems of the General Systems Theory (GST).\ud A general qualitative evaluation criteria for cognitive architectures is established based upon: a) requirements for a cognitive architecture, b) the theoretical framework based on the GST and c) core design principles for integrated cognitive conscious control systems

    Technology Directions for the 21st Century

    The Office of Space Communications (OSC) is tasked by NASA to conduct a planning process to meet NASA's science mission and other communications and data processing requirements. A set of technology trend studies was undertaken by Science Applications International Corporation (SAIC) for OSC to identify quantitative data that can be used to predict performance of electronic equipment in the future to assist in the planning process. Only commercially available, off-the-shelf technology was included. For each technology area considered, the current state of the technology is discussed, future applications that could benefit from use of the technology are identified, and likely future developments of the technology are described. The impact of each technology area on NASA operations is presented together with a discussion of the feasibility and risk associated with its development. An approximate timeline is given for the next 15 to 25 years to indicate the anticipated evolution of capabilities within each of the technology areas considered. This volume contains four chapters: one each on technology trends for database systems, computer software, neural and fuzzy systems, and artificial intelligence. The principal study results are summarized at the beginning of each chapter

Workshop attendees represented NASA, commercial software developers, the aerospace industry, government labs, and academia.     Framework of active robot learning

    A thesis submitted to the University of Bedfordshire, in fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Science by researchIn recent years, cognitive robots have become an attractive research area of Artificial Intelligent (AI). High-order beliefs for cognitive robots regard the robots' thought about their users' intention and preference. The existing approaches to the development of such beliefs through machine learning rely on particular social cues or specifically defined award functions . Therefore, their applications can be limited. This study carried out primary research on active robot learning (ARL) which facilitates a robot to develop high-order beliefs by actively collecting/discovering evidence it needs. The emphasis is on active learning, but not teaching. Hence, social cues and award functions are not necessary. In this study, the framework of ARL was developed. Fuzzy logic was employed in the framework for controlling robot and for identifying high-order beliefs. A simulation environment was set up where a human and a cognitive robot were modelled using MATLAB, and ARL was implemented through simulation. Simulations were also performed in this study where the human and the robot tried to jointly lift a stick and keep the stick level. The simulation results show that under the framework a robot is able to discover the evidence it needs to confirm its user's intention

    Numerical modeling and optimization of waterjet based surface decontamination

    The mission of this study is to investigate the high-pressure waterjet based surface decontamination. Our specific objective is to develop a practical procedure for selection of process conditions at given constraints and available knowledge. This investigation is expected to improve information processing in the course of material decontamination and assist in the implementation of the waterjet decontamination technology into practice. The development of a realistic procedure for processing of a chaotic and non-accurate information constitutes the main accomplishment of this study. The research involved acquisition of representative information about removal of brittle, elastic and viscous deposits. As a result an extended database representing jet based decoating has been compiled and feasibility of the damage free decontamination of various surfaces including highly sensitive ones is demonstrated. Artificial Intelligence techniques (Fuzzy Logic, Artificial Neural Networks, Genetic Computing) have been applied for processing of the acquired information and a realistic procedure of such an application has been developed and demonstrated. This procedure enables us to integrate available information about surface in question and existing numerical models. The developed procedure allows a user to incorporate both qualitative (linguistic) and quantitative (crisp) information into a process model and to predict operational conditions for treatment of an unknown surface using a readily detectable single experimental parameter that characterizes a deposit/substrata combination. The suggested technique is shown to perform reliably in the case of incomplete and chaotic information, where the traditional regression based methods fail. Numerical simulations of the two-phase flow inside a waterjet nozzle are conducted. Numerical solutions of the partial differential equations of the two-phase turbulent jet flow are obtained using FLUENT package. The numerical prediction of jet velocity profiles and the interface between the two phases (water - air) inside a nozzle are in good agreement with experimental data available in the literature. Thus the current problem setup and the results of simulations can be applied to improvement in the nozzle design. A realistic procedure for the design of the jet based surfaces decontamination developed, as a result of this study, is applied for optimization of the removal of the paint, rust, tar and rubber from the steel surface

    Learning preferences for personalisation in a pervasive environment

    With ever increasing accessibility to technological devices, services and applications there is also an increasing burden on the end user to manage and configure such resources. This burden will continue to increase as the vision of pervasive environments, with ubiquitous access to a plethora of resources, continues to become a reality. It is key that appropriate mechanisms to relieve the user of such burdens are developed and provided. These mechanisms include personalisation systems that can adapt resources on behalf of the user in an appropriate way based on the user's current context and goals. The key knowledge base of many personalisation systems is the set of user preferences that indicate what adaptations should be performed under which contextual situations. This thesis investigates the challenges of developing a system that can learn such preferences by monitoring user behaviour within a pervasive environment. Based on the findings of related works and experience from EU project research, several key design requirements for such a system are identified. These requirements are used to drive the design of a system that can learn accurate and up to date preferences for personalisation in a pervasive environment. A standalone prototype of the preference learning system has been developed. In addition the preference learning system has been integrated into a pervasive platform developed through an EU research project. The preference learning system is fully evaluated in terms of its machine learning performance and also its utility in a pervasive environment with real end users
