    Stable Torque Optimization for Redundant Robots Using a Short Preview

    We consider the known phenomenon of torque oscillations and motion instabilities that occur in redundant robots during the execution of sufficiently long Cartesian trajectories when the joint torque is instantaneously minimized. In the framework of online local redundancy resolution methods, we propose basic variations of the minimum torque scheme to address this issue. Either the joint torque norm is minimized over two successive discrete-time samples using a short preview window, or we minimize the norm of the difference with respect to a desired momentum-damping joint torque, or the two schemes are combined together. The resulting local control methods are all formulated as well-posed linear quadratic problems, and their closed-form solutions also generate low joint velocities while addressing the primary torque optimization objectives. Stable and consistent behaviors are obtained along short or long Cartesian position trajectories, as illustrated with simulations on a 3R planar arm and with experiments on a 7R KUKA LWR robot

    Optimal redundancy control for robot manipulators

    Optimal control for kinematically redundant robots is addressed for two different optimization problems. In the first optimization problem, we consider the minimization of the transfer time along a given Cartesian path for a redundant robot. This problem can be solved in two steps, by separating the generation of a joint path associated to the Cartesian path from the exact minimization of motion time under kinematic/dynamic bounds along the obtained parametrized joint path. In this thesis, multiple sub-optimal solutions can be found, depending on how redundancy is locally resolved in the joint space within the first step. A solution method that works at the acceleration level is proposed, by using weighted pseudoinversion, optimizing an inertia-related criterion, and including null-space damping. The obtained results demonstrate consistently good behaviors and definitely faster motion times in comparison with related methods proposed in the literature. The motion time obtained with the proposed method is close to the global time-optimal solution along the same Cartesian path. Furthermore, a reasonable tracking control performance is obtained on the experimental executed motions.     Planning and Control Strategies for Motion and Interaction of the Humanoid Robot COMAN+

    Despite the majority of robotic platforms are still confined in controlled environments such as factories, thanks to the ever-increasing level of autonomy and the progress on human-robot interaction, robots are starting to be employed for different operations, expanding their focus from uniquely industrial to more diversified scenarios. Humanoid research seeks to obtain the versatility and dexterity of robots capable of mimicking human motion in any environment. With the aim of operating side-to-side with humans, they should be able to carry out complex tasks without posing a threat during operations. In this regard, locomotion, physical interaction with the environment and safety are three essential skills to develop for a biped. Concerning the higher behavioural level of a humanoid, this thesis addresses both ad-hoc movements generated for specific physical interaction tasks and cyclic movements for locomotion. While belonging to the same category and sharing some of the theoretical obstacles, these actions require different approaches: a general high-level task is composed of specific movements that depend on the environment and the nature of the task itself, while regular locomotion involves the generation of periodic trajectories of the limbs. Separate planning and control architectures targeting these aspects of biped motion are designed and developed both from a theoretical and a practical standpoint, demonstrating their efficacy on the new humanoid robot COMAN+, built at Istituto Italiano di Tecnologia. The problem of interaction has been tackled by mimicking the intrinsic elasticity of human muscles, integrating active compliant controllers. However, while state-of-the-art robots may be endowed with compliant architectures, not many can withstand potential system failures that could compromise the safety of a human interacting with the robot. This thesis proposes an implementation of such low-level controller that guarantees a fail-safe behaviour, removing the threat that a humanoid robot could pose if a system failure occurred

    Model learning for trajectory tracking of robot manipulators

    Abstract Model based controllers have drastically improved robot performance, increasing task accuracy while reducing control effort. Nevertheless, all this was realized with a very strong assumption: the exact knowledge of the physical properties of both the robot and the environment that surrounds it. This assertion is often misleading: in fact modern robots are modeled in a very approximate way and, more important, the environment is almost never static and completely known. Also for systems very simple, such as robot manipulators, these assumptions are still too strong and must be relaxed. Many methods were developed which, exploiting previous experiences, are able to refine the nominal model: from classic identification techniques to more modern machine learning based approaches. Indeed, the topic of this thesis is the investigation of these data driven techniques in the context of robot control for trajectory tracking. In the first two chapters, preliminary knowledge is provided on both model based controllers, used in robotics to assure precise trajectory tracking, and model learning techniques. In the following three chapters, are presented the novelties introduced by the author in this context with respect to the state of the art: three works with the same premise (an inaccurate system modeling), an identical goal (accurate trajectory tracking control) but with small differences according to the specific platform of application (fully actuated, underactuated, redundant robots). In all the considered architectures, an online learning scheme has been introduced to correct the nominal feedback linearization control law. Indeed, the method has been primarily introduced in the literature to cope with fully actuated systems, showing its efficacy in the accurate tracking of joint space trajectories also with an inaccurate dynamic model. The main novelty of the technique was the use of only kinematics information, instead of torque measurements (in general very noisy), to online retrieve and compensate the dynamic mismatches. After that the method has been extended to underactuated robots. This new architecture was composed by an online learning correction of the controller, acting on the actuated part of the system (the nominal partial feedback linearization), and an offline planning phase, required to realize a dynamically feasible trajectory also for the zero dynamics of the system. The scheme was iterative: after each trial, according to the collected information, both the phases were improved and then repeated until the task achievement. Also in this case the method showed its capability, both in numerical simulations and on real experiments on a robotics platform. Eventually the method has been applied to redundant systems: differently from before, in this context the task consisted in the accurate tracking of a Cartesian end effector trajectory. In principle very similar to the fully actuated case, the presence of redundancy slowed down drastically the learning machinery convergence, worsening the performance. In order to cope with this, a redundancy resolution was proposed that, exploiting an approximation of the learning algorithm (Gaussian process regression), allowed to locally maximize the information and so select the most convenient self motion for the system; moreover, all of this was realized with just the resolution of a quadratic programming problem. Also in this case the method showed its performance, realizing an accurate online tracking while reducing both the control effort and the joints velocity, obtaining so a natural behaviour. The thesis concludes with summary considerations on the proposed approach and with possible future directions of research

    Motion Control of the Hybrid Wheeled-Legged Quadruped Robot Centauro

    Emerging applications will demand robots to deal with a complex environment, which lacks the structure and predictability of the industrial workspace. Complex scenarios will require robot complexity to increase as well, as compared to classical topologies such as fixed-base manipulators, wheeled mobile platforms, tracked vehicles, and their combinations. Legged robots, such as humanoids and quadrupeds, promise to provide platforms which are flexible enough to handle real world scenarios; however, the improved flexibility comes at the cost of way higher control complexity. As a trade-off, hybrid wheeled-legged robots have been proposed, resulting in the mitigation of control complexity whenever the ground surface is suitable for driving. Following this idea, a new hybrid robot called Centauro has been developed inside the Humanoid and Human Centered Mechatronics lab at Istituto Italiano di Tecnologia (IIT). Centauro is a wheeled-legged quadruped with a humanoid bi-manual upper-body. Differently from other platform of similar concept, Centauro employs customized actuation units, which provide high torque outputs, moderately fast motions, and the possibility to control the exerted torque. Moreover, with more than forty motors moving its limbs, Centauro is a very redundant platform, with the potential to execute many different tasks at the same time. This thesis deals with the design and development of a software architecture, and a control system, tailored to such a robot; both wheeled and legged locomotion strategies have been studied, as well as prioritized, whole-body and interaction controllers exploiting the robot torque control capabilities, and capable to handle the system redundancy. A novel software architecture, made of (i) a real-time robotic middleware, and (ii) a framework for online, prioritized Cartesian controller, forms the basis of the entire work

    Trends in vehicle motion control for automated driving on public roads

    In this paper, we describe how vehicle systems and the vehicle motion control are affected by automated driving on public roads. We describe the redundancy needed for a road vehicle to meet certain safety goals. The concept of system safety as well as system solutions to fault tolerant actuation of steering and braking and the associated fault tolerant power supply is described. Notably restriction of the operational domain in case of reduced capability of the driving automation system is discussed. Further we consider path tracking, state estimation of vehicle motion control required for automated driving as well as an example of a minimum risk manoeuver and redundant steering by means of differential braking. The steering by differential braking could offer heterogeneous or dissimilar redundancy that complements the redundancy of described fault tolerant steering systems for driving automation equipped vehicles. Finally, the important topic of verification of driving automation systems is addressed

First, historical development and hardware progress are presented mainly on human-size full-body biped humanoid robots, together with progress in pattern generation of biped locomotion. Then, «whole-body motion» ? coordinating leg and arm movements to fully leverage humanoids? high degrees of freedom ? is presented, followed by its applications in fields such as device evaluation and large-scale assembly. Upper-body humanoids with a mobile base, which are mainly utilized for research on human-robot interaction and cognitive robotics, are also introduced before addressing current issues and perspectives

    Control of Humanoid Robots for Use in Unstructured Environments

    Humanoid robots have the potential to replace human beings for dangerous tasks, such as disaster relief. One of the most important abilities for a humanoid robot is the ability to manipulate its surroundings. We developed human-in-the-loop techniques for the Atlas platform to compete in the DARPA Robotics Challenge. Many of the tasks in the event required actuation of the environment, such as turning a valve, pulling a lever, and opening a door. This paper will detail our work on manipulation for humanoid robots. In particular, we will discuss our approaches to effective operator interface design, manipulation techniques and motion planning
