    Queue Dynamics With Window Flow Control

    This paper develops a new model that describes the queueing process of a communication network when data sources use window flow control. The model takes into account the burstiness in sub-round-trip time (RTT) timescales and the instantaneous rate differences of a flow at different links. It is generic and independent of actual source flow control algorithms. Basic properties of the model and its relation to existing work are discussed. In particular, for a general network with multiple links, it is demonstrated that spatial interaction of oscillations allows queue instability to occur even when all flows have the same RTTs and maintain constant windows. The model is used to study the dynamics of delay-based congestion control algorithms. It is found that the ratios of RTTs are critical to the stability of such systems, and previously unknown modes of instability are identified. Packet-level simulations and testbed measurements are provided to verify the model and its predictions

    TCP performance enhancement in wireless networks via adaptive congestion control and active queue management

    The transmission control protocol (TCP) exhibits poor performance when used in error-prone wireless networks. Remedy to this problem has been an active research area. However, a widely accepted and adopted solution is yet to emerge. Difficulties of an acceptable solution lie in the areas of compatibility, scalability, computational complexity and the involvement of intermediate routers and switches. This dissertation rexriews the current start-of-the-art solutions to TCP performance enhancement, and pursues an end-to-end solution framework to the problem. The most noticeable cause of the performance degradation of TCP in wireless networks is the higher packet loss rate as compared to that in traditional wired networks. Packet loss type differentiation has been the focus of many proposed TCP performance enhancement schemes. Studies conduced by this dissertation research suggest that besides the standard TCP\u27s inability of discriminating congestion packet losses from losses related to wireless link errors, the standard TCP\u27s additive increase and multiplicative decrease (AIMD) congestion control algorithm itself needs to be redesigned to achieve better performance in wireless, and particularly, high-speed wireless networks. This dissertation proposes a simple, efficient, and effective end-to-end solution framework that enhances TCP\u27s performance through techniques of adaptive congestion control and active queue management. By end-to-end, it means a solution with no requirement of routers being wireless-aware or wireless-specific . TCP-Jersey has been introduced as an implementation of the proposed solution framework, and its performance metrics have been evaluated through extensive simulations. TCP-Jersey consists of an adaptive congestion control algorithm at the source by means of the source\u27s achievable rate estimation (ARE) —an adaptive filter of packet inter-arrival times, a congestion indication algorithm at the links (i.e., AQM) by means of packet marking, and a effective loss differentiation algorithm at the source by careful examination of the congestion marks carried by the duplicate acknowledgment packets (DUPACK). Several improvements to the proposed TCP-Jersey have been investigated, including a more robust ARE algorithm, a less computationally intensive threshold marking algorithm as the AQM link algorithm, a more stable congestion indication function based on virtual capacity at the link, and performance results have been presented and analyzed via extensive simulations of various network configurations. Stability analysis of the proposed ARE-based additive increase and adaptive decrease (AJAD) congestion control algorithm has been conducted and the analytical results have been verified by simulations. Performance of TCP-Jersey has been compared to that of a perfect , but not practical, TCP scheme, and encouraging results have been observed. Finally the framework of the TCP-Jersey\u27s source algorithm has been extended and generalized for rate-based congestion control, as opposed to TCP\u27s window-based congestion control, to provide a design platform for applications, such as real-time multimedia, that do not use TCP as transport protocol yet do need to control network congestion as well as combat packet losses in wireless networks. In conclusion, the framework architecture presented in this dissertation that combines the adaptive congestion control and active queue management in solving the TCP performance degradation problem in wireless networks has been shown as a promising answer to the problem due to its simplistic design philosophy complete compatibility with the current TCP/IP and AQM practice, end-to-end architecture for scalability, and the high effectiveness and low computational overhead. The proposed implementation of the solution framework, namely TCP-Jersey is a modification of the standard TCP protocol rather than a completely new design of the transport protocol. It is an end-to-end approach to address the performance degradation problem since it does not require split mode connection establishment and maintenance using special wireless-aware software agents at the routers. The proposed solution also differs from other solutions that rely on the link layer error notifications for packet loss differentiation. The proposed solution is also unique among other proposed end-to-end solutions in that it differentiates packet losses attributed to wireless link errors from congestion induced packet losses directly from the explicit congestion indication marks in the DUPACK packets, rather than inferring the loss type based on packet delay or delay jitter as in many other proposed solutions; nor by undergoing a computationally expensive off-line training of a classification model (e.g., HMM), or a Bayesian estimation/detection process that requires estimations of a priori loss probability distributions of different loss types. The proposed solution is also scalable and fully compatible to the current practice in Internet congestion control and queue management, but with an additional function of loss type differentiation that effectively enhances TCP\u27s performance over error-prone wireless networks. Limitations of the proposed solution architecture and areas for future researches are also addressed

    Adaptive Recovery Mechanism for SDN Controllers in Edge-Cloud supported FinTech Applications

    Financial Technology have revolutionized the delivery and usage of the autonomous operations and processes to improve the financial services. However, the massive amount of data (often called as big data) generated seamlessly across different geographic locations can end end up as a bottleneck for the underlying network infrastructure. To mitigate this challenge, software-defined network (SDN) has been leveraged in the proposed approach to provide scalability and resilience in multi-controller environment. However, in case if one of these controllers fail or cannot work as per desired requirements, then either the network load of that controller has to be migrated to another suitable controller or it has to be divided or balanced among other available controllers. For this purpose, the proposed approach provides an adaptive recovery mechanism in a multi-controller SDN setup using support vector machine-based classification approach. The proposed work defines a recovery pool based on the three vital parameters, reliability, energy, and latency. A utility matrix is then computed based on these parameters, on the basis of which the recovery controllers are selected. The results obtained prove that it is able to perform well in terms of considered evaluation parameters

    Discrete-time queueing model for responsive network traffic and bottleneck queues

    The Internet has been more and more intensively used in recent years. Although network infrastructure has been regularly upgraded, and the ability to manage heavy traffic greatly increased, especially on the core networks, congestion never ceases to appear, as the amount of traffic that flow on the Internet seems to be increasing at an even faster rate. Thus, congestion control mechanisms play a vital role in the functioning of the Internet. Active Queue Management (AQM) is a popular type of congestion control mechanism that is implemented on gateways (most notably routers), which can predict and avoid the congestion before it happens. When properly configured, AQMs can effectively reduce the congestion, and alleviate some of the problems such as global synchronisation and unfairness to bursty traffic. However, there are still many problems regarding AQMs. Most of the AQM schemes are quite sensitive to their parameters setting, and these parameters may be heavily dependent on the network traffic profile, which the administrator may not have intensive knowledge of, and is likely to change over time. When poorly configured, many AQMs perform no better than the basic drop-tail queue. There is currently no effective method to compare the performance of these AQM algorithms, caused by the parameter configuration problem. In this research, the aim is to propose a new analytical model, which mainly uses discrete-time queueing theory. A novel transient modification to the conventional equilibrium-based method is proposed, and it is utilised to further develop a dynamic interactive model of responsive traffic and bottleneck queues. Using step-by-step analysis, it represents the bursty traffic and oscillating queue length behaviour in practical network more accurately. It also provides an effective way of predicting the behaviour of a TCP-AQM system, allowing easier parameter optimisation for AQM schemes. Numerical solution using MATLAB and software simulation using NS-2 are used to extensively validate the proposed models, theories and conclusions

    Dynamic power allocation and routing for satellite and wireless networks with time varying channels

The certified thesis is available in the Institute Archives and Special Collections.Satellite and wireless networks operate over time varying channels that depend on attenuation conditions, power allocation decisions, and inter-channel interference. In order to reliably integrate these systems into a high speed data network and meet the increasing demand for high throughput and low delay, it is necessary to develop efficient network layer strategies that fully utilize the physical layer capabilities of each network element. In this thesis, we develop the notion of network layer capacity and describe capacity achieving power allocation and routing algorithms for general networks with wireless links and adaptive transmission rates. Fundamental issues of delay, throughput optimality, fairness, implementation complexity, and robustness to time varying channel conditions and changing user demands are discussed. Analysis is performed at the packet level and fully considers the queueing dynamics in systems with arbitrary, potentially bursty, arrival processes. Applications of this research are examined for the specific cases of satellite networks and ad-hoc wireless networks. Indeed, in Chapter 3 we consider a multi-beam satellite downlink and develop a dynamic power allocation algorithm that allocates power to each link in reaction to queue backlog and current channel conditions. The algorithm operates without knowledge of the arriving traffic or channel statistics, and is shown to achieve maximum throughput while maintaining average delay guarantees. At the end of Chapter 4, a crosslinked collection of such satellites is considered and a satellite separation principle is developed, demonstrating that joint optimal control can be implemented with separate algorithms for the downlinks and crosslinks.(cont.) Ad-hoc wireless networks are given special attention in Chapter 6. A simple cell- partitioned model for a mobile ad-hoc network with N users is constructed, and exact expressions for capacity and delay are derived. End-to-end delay is shown to be O(N), and hence grows large as the size of the network is increased. To reduce delay, a transmission protocol which sends redundant packet information over multiple paths is developed and shown to provide O(vN) delay at the cost of reducing throughput. A fundamental rate- delay tradeoff curve is established, and the given protocols for achieving O(N) and O(vN) delay are shown to operate on distinct boundary points of this curve. In Chapters 4 and 5 we consider optimal control for a general time-varying network. A cross-layer strategy is developed that stabilizes the network whenever possible, and makes fair decisions about which data to serve when inputs exceed capacity. The strategy is decoupled into separate algorithms for dynamic flow control, power allocation, and routing, and allows for each user to make greedy decisions independent of the actions of others. The combined strategy is shown to yield data rates that are arbitrarily close to the optimally fair operating point that is achieved when all network controllers are coordinated and have perfect knowledge of future events.     Proxy Support for HTTP Adaptive Streaming

    Not long ago streaming video over the Internet included only short clips of low quality video. Now the possibilities seem endless as professional productions are made available in high definition. This explosion of growth is the result of several factors, such as increasing network performance, advancements in video encoding technology, improvements to video streaming techniques, and a growing number of devices capable of handling video. However, despite the improvements to Internet video streaming this paradigm is still evolving. HTTP adaptive streaming involves encoding a video at multiple quality levels then dividing those quality levels into small chunks. The player can then determine which quality level to retrieve the next chunk from in order to optimize video playback when considering the underlying network conditions. This thesis first presents an experimental framework that allows for adaptive streaming players to be analyzed and evaluated. Evaluation is beneficial because there are several concerns with the adaptive video streaming ecosystem such as achieving a high video playback quality while also ensuring stable playback quality. The primary contribution of this thesis is the evaluation of prefetching by a proxy server as a means to improve streaming performance. This work considers an implementation of a proxy server that is functional with the extremely popular Netflix streaming service, and it is evaluated using two Netflix players. The results show its potential to improve video streaming performance in several scenarios. It effectively increases the buffer capacity of the player as chunks can be prefetched in advance of the player's request then stored on the proxy to be quickly delivered once requested. This allows for degradation in network conditions to be hidden from the player while the proxy serves prefetched data, preventing a reduction to the video quality as a result of an overreaction by the player. Further, the proxy can reduce the impact of the bottleneck in the network, achieving higher throughput by utilizing parallel connections to the server

    Adaptive Media Streaming to Mobile Devices: Challenges, Enhancements, and Recommendations

    Video streaming is predicted to become the dominating traffic in mobile broadband networks. At the same time, adaptive HTTP streaming is developing into the preferred way of streaming media over the Internet. In this paper, we evaluate how different components of a streaming system can be optimized when serving content to mobile devices in particular. We first analyze the media traffic from a Norwegian network and media provider. Based on our findings, we outline benefits and challenges for HTTP streaming, on the sender and the receiver side, and we investigate how HTTP-based streaming affects server performance. Furthermore, we discuss various aspects of efficient coding of the video segments from both performance and user perception point of view. The final part of the paper studies efficient adaptation and delivery to mobile devices over wireless networks. We experimentally evaluate and improve adaptation strategies, multilink solutions, and bandwidth prediction techniques. Based on the results from our evaluations, we make recommendations for how an adaptive streaming system should handle mobile devices. Small changes, or simple awareness of how users perceive quality, can often have large effects

    Performance evaluation of cross-layer energy-efficient transmit antenna selection for spatial multiplexing systems

    Abstract Multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) and cognitive radio (CR) are key techniques for present and future high-speed wireless technologies. On the other hand, there are rising energy costs and greenhouse emissions associated with the provision of high-speed wireless communications. Consequently, the design of high-speed energy efficient systems is paramount for next-generation wireless systems. This thesis studies energy-efficient antenna selection for spatial multiplexing multiple-antenna systems from a cross-layer perspective, contrary to the norm, where physical-layer energy efficiency metrics are optimized. The enhanced system performance achieved by cross-layer designs in wireless networks motivates this research. The aim of the thesis is to propose and analyze novel cross-layer energy-efficient transmit antenna selection schemes that enhance energy efficiency and system performance - with regard to throughput, transmission latency, packet error rate and receiver buffer requirements. Firstly, this thesis derives the analytical expression for data link throughput for point-to-point spatial multiplexing multiple-antenna systems - which include MIMO and underlay CR MIMO systems - equipped with linear receivers with N-process stop-and-wait (N-SAW) as the automatic repeat request (ARQ) protocol. The performance of cross-layer transmit antenna selection, which maximizes the derived throughput metric, is then analyzed. The impact of packet size, number of SAW processes and the stalling of packets inside the receiver reordering buffer is considered in the investigation. The results show that the cross-layer approach, which takes into account system characteristics at both the data link and physical layers, has superior performance in comparison with the conventional physical-layer approach, which optimizes capacity. Secondly, this thesis proposes a cross-layer energy efficiency metric, based on the derived system throughput. Energy-efficient transmit antenna selection for spatial multiplexing MIMO systems, which maximizes the proposed cross-layer energy efficiency metric, by jointly optimizing the transmit antenna subset and transmit power, subject to spectral efficiency and transmit power constraints, is then introduced and analyzed. Additionally, adaptive modulation is incorporated into the proposed cross-layer scheme to enhance system performance. Cross-layer energyefficient transmit antenna selection for underlay CR MIMO systems, where interference constraints now come into play, is then considered. Lastly, this thesis develops novel reduced complexity versions of the proposed cross-layer energyefficient transmit antenna selection schemes - along with detailed complexity analysis - which shows that the proposed cross-layer approach attains significant energy efficiency and performance gains at affordable computational complexity
