    Nonlinear constrained and saturated control of power electronics and electromechanical systems

    Power electronic converters are extensively adopted for the solution of timely issues, such as power quality improvement in industrial plants, energy management in hybrid electrical systems, and control of electrical generators for renewables. Beside nonlinearity, this systems are typically characterized by hard constraints on the control inputs, and sometimes the state variables. In this respect, control laws able to handle input saturation are crucial to formally characterize the systems stability and performance properties. From a practical viewpoint, a proper saturation management allows to extend the systems transient and steady-state operating ranges, improving their reliability and availability. The main topic of this thesis concern saturated control methodologies, based on modern approaches, applied to power electronics and electromechanical systems. The pursued objective is to provide formal results under any saturation scenario, overcoming the drawbacks of the classic solution commonly applied to cope with saturation of power converters, and enhancing performance. For this purpose two main approaches are exploited and extended to deal with power electronic applications: modern anti-windup strategies, providing formal results and systematic design rules for the anti-windup compensator, devoted to handle control saturation, and “one step” saturated feedback design techniques, relying on a suitable characterization of the saturation nonlinearity and less conservative extensions of standard absolute stability theory results. The first part of the thesis is devoted to present and develop a novel general anti-windup scheme, which is then specifically applied to a class of power converters adopted for power quality enhancement in industrial plants. In the second part a polytopic differential inclusion representation of saturation nonlinearity is presented and extended to deal with a class of multiple input power converters, used to manage hybrid electrical energy sources. The third part regards adaptive observers design for robust estimation of the parameters required for high performance control of power systems

    A generalized framework for robust nonlinear compensation (application to an atmospheric reentry control problem)

    Ce travail de thèse est consacré à l'extension de l'Inversion Dynamique non-linéaire (NDI-Nonlinear Dynamic Inversion) pour un ensemble plus grand de systèmes non-linéaires, tout en garantissant des conditions de stabilité suffisantes. La NDI a été étudiée dans le cas de diverses applications, y compris en aéronautique et en aérospatiale. Elle permet de calculer des lois de contrôle capables de linéariser et de découpler un modèle non-linéaire à tout point de fonctionnement de son enveloppe d'état. Cependant cette méthode est intrinsèquement non-robuste aux erreurs de modélisation et aux saturations en entrée. En outre, dans un contexte non-linéaire, l'obtention d'une garantie quantifiable du domaine de stabilité atteint reste à l'heure actuelle complexe. Contrairement aux approches classiques de la NDI, notre méthodologie peut être considérée comme un cadre de compensation non-linéaire généralisé qui permet d'intégrer les incertitudes et les saturations en entrée dans le processus de conception. En utilisant des stratégies de contrôle antiwindup, la loi de pilotage peut être calculée grâce à un simple processus en deux phases. Dans ce cadre de travail généralisé des transformations linéaires fractionnaires (LFT - Linear Fractional Transformations) de la boucle fermée non-linéaire peuvent être facilement déduites pour l'analyse de la stabilité robuste en utilisant des outils standards pour de systèmes linéaires. La méthode proposée est testée pour le pilotage d'un véhicule de rentrée atmosphérique de type aile delta lors de ses phases hypersonique, transsonique et subsonique. Pour cette thèse, un simulateur du vol incluant divers facteurs externes ainsi que des erreurs de modélisation a été développé dans Simulink.This thesis work is devoted to extending Nonlinear Dynamic Inversion (NDI) for a large scale of nonlinear systems while guaranteeing sufficient stability conditions. NDI has been studied in a wide range of applications, including aeronautics and aerospace. It allows to compute nonlinear control laws able to decouple and linearize a model at any operating point of its state envelope. However, this method is inherently non-robust to modelling errors and input saturations. Moreover, obtaining a quantifiable guarantee of the attained stability domain in a nonlinear control context is not a very straightforward task. Unlike standard NDI approaches, our methodology can be viewed as a generalized nonlinear compensation framework which allows to incorporate uncertainties and input saturations in the design process. Paralleling anti-windup strategies, the controller can be computed through a single multichannel optimization problem or through a simple two-step process. Within this framework, linear fractional transformations of the nonlinear closed-loop can be easily derived for robust stability analysis using standard tools for linear systems. The proposed method is tested for the flight control of a delta wing type reentry vehicle at hypersonic, transonic and subsonic phases of the atmospheric reentry.     Geometric algorithms for input constrained systems with application to flight control.

    In this thesis novel numerical algorithms are developed to solve some problems of analysis and control design for unstable linear dynamical systems having their input constrained by maximum amplitude and rate of the control signals. Although the results obtained are of a general nature, all the problems considered are induced by flight control applications. Moreover, all these problems are stated in terms of geometry, and because of this their solution in the thesis was effectively achieved by geometrically-oriented methods. The problems considered are mainly connected with the notions of the controllable and stability regions. The controllable region is defined as the set of states of an unstable dynamical system that can be stabilized by some realizable control action. This region is bounded due to input constraints and its size can serve as a controllability measure for the control design problem. A numerical algorithm for the computation of two-dimensional slices of the region is proposed. Moreover, the stability region design is also considered. The stability region of the closed-loop system is the set of states that can be stabilized by a particular controller. This region generally utilizes only a part of the controllable region. Therefore, the controller design objective may be formulated as maximizing this region. A controller that is optimal in this sense is proposed for the case of one and two exponentially unstable open-loop eigenvalues. In the final part of the thesis a linear control allocation problem is considered for overactuated systems and its real-time solution is suggested. Using the control allocation, the actuator selection task is separated from the regulation task in the control design. All fault detection and reconfiguration capabilities are concentrated in one special unit called the control allocator, while a general control algorithm, which produces 'virtual' input for the system, remains intact. In the case of an actuator fault, only the control allocation unit needs to be reconfigured and in many cases it can generate the same 'virtual' input using a different set of control effectors. A novel control allocation algorithm, which is proposed in the thesis, is based on multidimensional interval bisection techniques

    Robust adaptive flight control systems in the presence of time delay

Currently, there is a lack of robustness guarantees against time delay with the difficulty arising from the fact that the underlying problem is nonlinear and time varying. Existing results for this problem have been quite limited, with most results either being local or at best, semi-global. In this thesis, robust adaptive control for a class of plants with global boundedness in the presence of time-delay is established. This class of plants pertains to linear systems whose states are accessible. The global boundedness is accomplished using a standard adaptive control law with a projection algorithm for a range of non-zero delays. The upper bound of such delays, i.e. the delay margin, is explicitly computed. The results of this thesis provide a highly desirable fundamental property of adaptive control, robustness to time-delays, a necessary step towards developing theoretically verifiable flight control systems.by Megumi Matsutani.Ph.D
