    An efficient multichannel wireless sensor networks MAC protocol based on IEEE 802.11 distributed co-ordinated function.

    This research aimed to create new knowledge and pioneer a path in the area relating to future trends in the WSN, by resolving some of the issues at the MAC layer in Wireless Sensor Networks. This work introduced a Multi-channel Distributed Coordinated Function (MC-DCF) which takes advantage of multi-channel assignment. The backoff algorithm of the IEEE 802.11 distributed coordination function (DCF) was modified to invoke channel switching, based on threshold criteria in order to improve the overall throughput for wireless sensor networks. This work commenced by surveying different protocols: contention-based MAC protocols, transport layer protocols, cross-layered design and multichannel multi-radio assignments. A number of existing protocols were analysed, each attempting to resolve one or more problems faced by the current layers. The 802.15.4 performed very poorly at high data rate and at long range. Therefore 802.15.4 is not suitable for sensor multimedia or surveillance system with streaming data for future multichannel multi-radio systems. A survey on 802.11 DCF - which was designed mainly for wireless networks –supports and confirm that it has a power saving mechanism which is used to synchronise nodes. However it uses a random back-off mechanism that cannot provide deterministic upper bounds on channel access delay and as such cannot support real-time traffic. The weaknesses identified by surveying this protocol form the backbone of this thesis The overall aim for this thesis was to introduce multichannel with single radio as a new paradigm for IEEE 802.11 Distributed Coordinated Function (DCF) in wireless sensor networks (WSNs) that is used in a wide range of applications, from military application, environmental monitoring, medical care, smart buildings and other industry and to extend WSNs with multimedia capability which sense for instance sounds or motion, video sensor which capture video events of interest. Traditionally WSNs do not need high data rate and throughput, since events are normally captured periodically. With the paradigm shift in technology, multimedia streaming has become more demanding than data sensing applications as such the need for high data rate protocol for WSN which is an emerging technology in this area. The IEEE 802.11 can support data rates up to 54Mbps and 802.11 DCF was designed specifically for use in wireless networks. This thesis focused on designing an algorithm that applied multichannel to IEEE 802.11 DCF back-off algorithm to reduce the waiting time of a node and increase throughput when attempting to access the medium. Data collection in WSN tends to suffer from heavy congestion especially nodes nearer to the sink node. Therefore, this thesis proposes a contention based MAC protocol to address this problem from the inspiration of the 802.11 DCF backoff algorithm resulting from a comparison of IEEE 802.11 and IEEE 802.15.4 for Future Green Multichannel Multi-radio Wireless Sensor Networks

    A critical analysis of research potential, challenges and future directives in industrial wireless sensor networks

    In recent years, Industrial Wireless Sensor Networks (IWSNs) have emerged as an important research theme with applications spanning a wide range of industries including automation, monitoring, process control, feedback systems and automotive. Wide scope of IWSNs applications ranging from small production units, large oil and gas industries to nuclear fission control, enables a fast-paced research in this field. Though IWSNs offer advantages of low cost, flexibility, scalability, self-healing, easy deployment and reformation, yet they pose certain limitations on available potential and introduce challenges on multiple fronts due to their susceptibility to highly complex and uncertain industrial environments. In this paper a detailed discussion on design objectives, challenges and solutions, for IWSNs, are presented. A careful evaluation of industrial systems, deadlines and possible hazards in industrial atmosphere are discussed. The paper also presents a thorough review of the existing standards and industrial protocols and gives a critical evaluation of potential of these standards and protocols along with a detailed discussion on available hardware platforms, specific industrial energy harvesting techniques and their capabilities. The paper lists main service providers for IWSNs solutions and gives insight of future trends and research gaps in the field of IWSNs

    The Mobility Impact in IEEE 802.11p Infrastructureless Vehicular Networks

    Vehicular ad hoc networks (VANETs) are an extreme case of mobile ad hoc networks (MANETs). High speed and frequent network topology changes are the main characteristics of vehicular networks. These characteristics lead to special issues and challenges in the network design, especially at the medium access control (MAC) layer. Due to high speed of nodes and their frequent disconnections, it is difficult to design a MAC scheme in VANETs that satisfies the quality-of-service requirements in all networking scenarios. In this thesis, we provide a comprehensive evaluation of the mobility impact on the IEEE 802.11p MAC performance. The study evaluates basic performance metrics such as packet delivery ratio, throughput, and delay, as well as the impact of mobility factors. The study also presents a relation between the mobility factors and the respective medium access behavior. Moreover, a new unfairness problem according to node relative speed is identified for both broadcast and unicast scenarios. To achieve better performance, we propose two dynamic contention window mechanisms to alleviate network performance degradation due to high mobility. Extensive simulation results show the significant impact of mobility on the IEEE 802.11p MAC performance, an identification of a new unfairness problem in the vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) communications, and the effectiveness of the proposed MAC schemes

    Optimised protocols for time-critical applications and internetworking in wehicular ad-hoc networks

    Vehicular ad-hoc networks (VANETs) that enable communication among vehicles and between vehicles and unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) and cellular base stations have recently attracted significant interest from the research community, due to the wide range of practical applications they can facilitate (e.g., road safety, traffic management and rescue missions). Despite this increased research activity, the high vehicle mobility in a VANET raises concerns regarding the robustness and adaptiveness of such networks to support time-critical applications and internetworking. In this thesis, as a first step toward the design of efficient MAC protocol to support time-critical applications and internetworking, we show that it is indeed possible to follow the dynamics of a network and consequently adapt the transmission probability of the Aloha protocol to reduce the interference and maximise the single-hop throughput between adjacent nodes. Extensive simulation validates the proposed analytical model, which thus can serve as a promising tool to improve VANETs performance. By exploiting the parallel between the CSMA/CA and Aloha performance models, the optimal transmission probability for the Aloha protocol as a function of estimated vehicular density is derived. This probability is then used to obtain the optimal maximum CW that can be integrated in an amended CSMA/CA protocol to maximise the single-hop throughput among adjacent vehicles. We show by means of simulation that the beneficial impact the proposed protocol is increased channel throughput and reduced transmission delay when compared with the standardised protocol CSMA/CA in IEEE 802.11p. These results reveal the applicability of the new, optimised protocol to safety applications and clustering techniques with stringent performance requirements. Lastly, we propose a Stable Clustering Algorithm for vehicular ad-hoc networks (SCalE) internetworking. The exchange of the necessary status information to support the efficient clusters formation can firmly relay on the support of our optimised CSMA/CA protocol. The SCalE algorithm makes use of the knowledge of the vehicles behaviour (explained in Chapter 5) for efficient selection of CHs, and selects a backup CH on top of the CH to maintain the stability of cluster structures. The increased stability and improved performance of the SCalE algorithm is studied and compared with existing clustering algorithms.Open Acces

    Overlapped CDMA system in optical packet networks : resource allocation and performance evalutation

    Dans cette thèse, la performance du système CDMA à chevauchement optique (OVCDMA) au niveau de la couche de contrôle d'accès au support (MAC) et l'allocation des ressources au niveau de la couche physique (PRY) sont étudiées. Notre but est d'apporter des améliorations pour des applications à débits multiples en répondant aux exigences de délai minimum tout en garantissant la qualité de service (QoS). Nous proposons de combiner les couches PRY et MAC par une nouvelle approche d'optimisation de performance qui consolide l'efficacité potentielle des réseaux optiques. Pour atteindre notre objectif, nous réalisons plusieurs étapes d'analyse. Tout d 'abord, nous suggérons le protocole S-ALOHA/OV-CDMA optique pour sa simplicité de contrôler les transmissions optiques au niveau de la couche liaison. Le débit du réseau, la latence de transmission et la stabilité du protocole sont ensuite évalués. L'évaluation prend en considération les caractéristiques physiques du système OY-CDMA, représentées par la probabilité de paquets bien reçus. Le système classique à traitement variable du gain (YPG) du CDMA, ciblé pour les applications à débits multiples, et le protocole MAC ±round-robin¿ récepteur/émetteur (R31), initialement proposé pour les réseaux par paquets en CDMA optique sont également pris en compte. L'objectif est d ' évaluer comparativement la performance du S-ALOHA/OY-CDMA en termes de l'immunité contre l'interférence d'accès lTIultiple (MAI) et les variations des charges du trafic. Les résultats montrent que les performances peuvent varier en ce qui concerne le choix du taux de transmission et la puissance de transmission optique au niveau de la couche PRY. Ainsi, nous proposons un schéma de répartition optimale des ressources pour allouer des taux de transmission à chevauchement optique et de puissance optique de transmission dans le système OY-CDMA comme des ressources devant être optimalement et équitablement réparties entre les utilisateurs qui sont regroupés dans des classes de différentes qualités de service. La condition d'optimalité est basée sur la maximisation de la capacité par utilisateur de la couche PHY. De ce fait, un choix optimal des ressources physiques est maintenant possible, mais il n'est pas équitable entre les classes. Par conséquent, pour améliorer la performance de la couche liaison tout en éliminant le problème d'absence d'équité, nous proposons comme une approche unifiée un schéma équitable et optimal pour l'allocation des ressources fondé sur la qualité de service pour des multiplexages temporels des réseaux par paquets en CDMA à chevauchement optique. Enfin, nous combinons cette dernière approche avec le protocole MAC dans un problème d'optimisation d'allocation équitable des ressources à contrainte de délai afin de mieux améliorer le débit du réseau et le délai au niveau de la couche liaison avec allocation équitable et optimale des ressources au niveau de la couche PHY

    Medium Access Control in Distributed Networks with Large Propagation Delay

    Most of the Earth is covered by water, so underwater acoustic networks (UWANs) are becoming increasingly popular in a variety of undersea applications. The needs to understand the underwater environment and exploit rich undersea resources have motivated a further development of UWANs. Underwater acoustic signals suffer from more difficult physical channel phenomena than terrestrial radio signals due to the harsh underwater environment, such as sound absorption, time-varying multipath spread, man-made and ambient noise, temperature and pressure dependent refraction, scattering and Doppler shift. Among all the challenges, the large ratio of propagation delay to packet duration (relative propagation delay (a)) is arguably the most difficult one to address in the Medium Access Control (MAC) layer. In this dissertation we focus on the examination and improvement of the MAC layer function in UWANs, based on a critical examination of existing techniques. Many MAC techniques have been proposed in recent years, however most of them assume the ratio of the propagation delay to the packet duration is negligibly small (a>1), these protocols perform poorly. This is because the large a leads to both a large negotiation delay in handshaking based protocols and the space-time uncertainty problem as the packets do not arrive at each node contemporarily. Some underwater-oriented protocols have been proposed which attempt to address these issues but the more successful rely on master nodes or a common understanding of geometry or time. We show by analysis and simulation that it is possible to eliminate collisions in ad-hoc networks with large relative propagation delay (a>>1) as well as improving the channel utilisation, without a common understanding of geometry or time. This technique is generally applicable, even for truly ad-hoc homogeneous peer-to-peer networks with no reliance on master nodes or other heterogeneous features. The mechanism is based on future scheduling with the inclusion of overhearing of RTS messages and allowing third-party objections to proposed transmissions. This MAC mechanism is immediately applicable in underwater acoustic networks (UWANs), and may find other uses, such as in space or very high rate terrestrial wireless networks. In summary, the key contributions of this study are: investigating the causes of the poor performance of existing MAC protocols in ad-hoc UWANs with large relative propagation delay, fully detailing the problem in order to propose analytic solutions, demonstrating how the MAC layer of an ad-hoc UWAN can eliminate packet collisions as well as improve channel utilisation without time synchronization or a network’s self-configuring phase to gain knowledge of the geometry, and verifying the utility of the proposals via both theoretical analysis and simulations

    Modelling of a Hybrid MAC Protocol for M2M Communications

    Machine-to-machine (M2M) communications is one of the enabling technologies for connecting massive number of devices to the Internet of Things (IoT). M2M communications have different characteristics than human-to-human (H2H) communications. In this work, we propose a scalable, hybrid MAC protocol that will satisfy user quality-of-service (QoS) requirements. We model both periodic and nonperiodic traffic. The proposed MAC protocol organizes transmissions into superframes consisting of a number of frames. A machine is assumed to generate a one or zero packet per its period. The machines have been divided into several types according to their packet generation probabilities. The generated packets are classified into different traffic classes according to their tolerance to packet losses and served by a subframe. Further, each subframe is divided into two sub-periods one serving contention and the other reserved traffic of that traffic class. We formulated an optimization problem that minimizes frame length subject to QoS user requirements. Then, we derived packet loss probability for each class as well as total packet loss probability for the optimization. Formulation resulted in a nonlinear optimization problem, but numerical results show that an LP approximation provides a nearly optimal solution. The work also considered the proposed protocol under user mobility. The packet arrival process under user mobility has been derived. Then the performance of the protocol has been evaluated with the contention service under this arrival process. The contention service with and without packet losses have been considered. A priority queueing mechanism also has been studied for M2M communication. The results of this thesis may be useful in the design of M2M communication system

    Resource allocation in wireless access network : A queueing theoretic approach

    To meet its performance targets, the future 5G networks need to greatly optimize the Radio Access Networks (RANs), which connect the end users to the core network. In this thesis, we develop mathematical models to study three aspects of the operation of the RAN in modern wireless systems. The models are analyzed using  the techniques borrowed mainly from queueing theory and stochastic control. Also, simulations are extensively used to gain further insights. First, we provide a detailed Markov model of the random access process in LTE. From this, we observe that the bottleneck in the signaling channel causes congestion in the  access  when a large number of M2M devices attempt to enter the network. Then, in the context of the so-called Heterogeneous networks (HetNets), we suggest  dynamic load balancing schemes that alleviate this congestion and reduce the overall access delay. We then use flow-level models for elastic data traffic to study the problem of coordinating the activities of the neighboring base stations.  We seek to minimize the flow-level delay when there are various classes of users. We classify the users based on their locations, or, in dynamic TDD systems, on the direction of service the network is providing to them. Using interacting queues and different operating policies of running such queues, we study the amount of gain the dynamic policies can provide over the static probabilistic policies. Our results show that simple dynamic policies can  provide very good performance in the cases considered. Finally, we consider the problem of opportunistically scheduling the flows of users with time-varying channels  taking into account   the size of data they need to transfer. Using flow-level models in a system with homogeneous channels, we provide the optimal scheduling policy when there are  no new job arrivals. We also suggest the method to implement such a policy in a time-slotted system. With heterogeneous channels, the problem is intractable for the flow-level techniques. Therefore, we utilize the framework of the restless-multi-armed-bandit (RMAB) problems employing the so-called Whittle index approach. The Whittle index approach, by relaxing the scheduling constraints, makes the problem separable, and thereby provides an exact solution to the modified problem. Our simulations suggest that when  this solution is applied as a heuristic to the original problem, it gives good performance, even with dynamic job arrivals
