    Model predictive control techniques for hybrid systems

    This paper describes the main issues encountered when applying model predictive control to hybrid processes. Hybrid model predictive control (HMPC) is a research field non-fully developed with many open challenges. The paper describes some of the techniques proposed by the research community to overcome the main problems encountered. Issues related to the stability and the solution of the optimization problem are also discussed.     Moving-Horizon Dynamic Power System State Estimation Using Semidefinite Relaxation

    Accurate power system state estimation (PSSE) is an essential prerequisite for reliable operation of power systems. Different from static PSSE, dynamic PSSE can exploit past measurements based on a dynamical state evolution model, offering improved accuracy and state predictability. A key challenge is the nonlinear measurement model, which is often tackled using linearization, despite divergence and local optimality issues. In this work, a moving-horizon estimation (MHE) strategy is advocated, where model nonlinearity can be accurately captured with strong performance guarantees. To mitigate local optimality, a semidefinite relaxation approach is adopted, which often provides solutions close to the global optimum.     Robust MPC of constrained nonlinear systems based on interval arithmetic

    A robust MPC for constrained discrete-time nonlinear systems with additive uncertainties is presented. The proposed controller is based on the concept of reachable sets, that is, the sets that contain the predicted evolution of the uncertain system for all possible uncertainties. If processes are nonlinear these sets are very difficult to compute. A conservative approximation based on interval arithmetic is proposed for the online computation of these sets. This technique provides good results with a computational effort only slightly greater than the one corresponding to the nominal prediction. These sets are incorporated into the MPC formulation to achieve robust stability. By choosing a robust positively invariant set as a terminal constraint, a robustly stabilising controller is obtained. Stability is guaranteed in the case of suboptimality of the computed solution.     Gaussian Process Regression for Estimating EM Ducting Within the Marine Atmospheric Boundary Layer

    We show that Gaussian process regression (GPR) can be used to infer the electromagnetic (EM) duct height within the marine atmospheric boundary layer (MABL) from sparsely sampled propagation factors within the context of bistatic radars. We use GPR to calculate the posterior predictive distribution on the labels (i.e. duct height) from both noise-free and noise-contaminated array of propagation factors. For duct height inference from noise-contaminated propagation factors, we compare a naive approach, utilizing one random sample from the input distribution (i.e. disregarding the input noise), with an inverse-variance weighted approach, utilizing a few random samples to estimate the true predictive distribution. The resulting posterior predictive distributions from these two approaches are compared to a "ground truth" distribution, which is approximated using a large number of Monte-Carlo samples. The ability of GPR to yield accurate and fast duct height predictions using a few training examples indicates the suitability of the proposed method for real-time applications.Comment: 15 pages, 6 figure
