Comparison between unipolar and bipolar single phase grid-connected inverters for PV applications

    Get PDF
An inverter is essential for the interfacing of photovoltaic panels with the AC network. There are many possible inverter topologies and inverter switching schemes and each one will have its own relative advantages and disadvantages. Efficiency and output current distortion are two important factors governing the choice of inverter system. In this paper, it is argued that current controlled inverters offer significant advantages from the point of view of minimisation of current distortion. Two inverter switching strategies are explored in detail. These are the unipolar current controlled inverter and the bipolar current controlled inverter. With respect to low frequency distortion, previously published works provide theoretical arguments in favour of bipolar switching. On the other hand it has also been argued that the unipolar switched inverter offers reduced switching losses and generates less EMI. On efficiency grounds, it appears that the unipolar switched inverter has an advantage. However, experimental results presented in this paper show that the level of low frequency current distortion in the unipolar switched inverter is such that it can only comply with Australian Standard 4777.2 above a minimum output current. On the other hand it is shown that at the same current levels bipolar switching results in reduced low frequency harmonics

Machine learning and deep learning based methods toward Industry 4.0 predictive maintenance in induction motors: Α state of the art survey

Purpose: Developments in Industry 4.0 technologies and Artificial Intelligence (AI) have enabled data-driven manufacturing. Predictive maintenance (PdM) has therefore become the prominent approach for fault detection and diagnosis (FD/D) of induction motors (IMs). The maintenance and early FD/D of IMs are critical processes, considering that they constitute the main power source in the industrial production environment. Machine learning (ML) methods have enhanced the performance and reliability of PdM. Various deep learning (DL) based FD/D methods have emerged in recent years, providing automatic feature engineering and learning and thereby alleviating drawbacks of traditional ML based methods. This paper presents a comprehensive survey of ML and DL based FD/D methods of IMs that have emerged since 2015. An overview of the main DL architectures used for this purpose is also presented. A discussion of the recent trends is given as well as future directions for research. Design/methodology/approach: A comprehensive survey has been carried out through all available publication databases using related keywords. Classification of the reviewed works has been done according to the main ML and DL techniques and algorithms Findings: DL based PdM methods have been mainly introduced and implemented for IM fault diagnosis in recent years. Novel DL FD/D methods are based on single DL techniques as well as hybrid techniques. DL methods have also been used for signal preprocessing and moreover, have been combined with traditional ML algorithms to enhance the FD/D performance in feature engineering. Publicly available datasets have been mostly used to test the performance of the developed methods, however industrial datasets should become available as well. Multi-agent system (MAS) based PdM employing ML classifiers has been explored. Several methods have investigated multiple IM faults, however, the presence of multiple faults occurring simultaneously has rarely been investigated. Originality/value: The paper presents a comprehensive review of the recent advances in PdM of IMs based on ML and DL methods that have emerged since 2015Peer Reviewe

    Induction Motors

AC motors play a major role in modern industrial applications. Squirrel-cage induction motors (SCIMs) are probably the most frequently used when compared to other AC motors because of their low cost, ruggedness, and low maintenance. The material presented in this book is organized into four sections, covering the applications and structural properties of induction motors (IMs), fault detection and diagnostics, control strategies, and the more recently developed topology based on the multiphase (more than three phases) induction motors. This material should be of specific interest to engineers and researchers who are engaged in the modeling, design, and implementation of control algorithms applied to induction motors and, more generally, to readers broadly interested in nonlinear control, health condition monitoring, and fault diagnosis

FPGA Implementation of AI-Based Inverter IGBT Open Circuit Fault Diagnosis of Induction Motor Drives

In modern industrial manufacturing processes, induction motors are broadly utilized as industrial drives. Online condition monitoring and diagnosis of faults that occur inside and/or outside of the Induction Motor Drive (IMD) system makes the motor highly reliable, helping to avoid unsched-uled downtimes, which cause more revenue loss and disruption of production, thus making it as the extensively used industrial drive. This can be achieved only when the irregularities produced out of the fault circumstance are sensed at that instant itself and diagnosed as to what and where happened for suitable action by the protective equipment employed. This requires intelligent control with high performance scheme. Hence, Field Programmable Gate Array (FPGA) based Neuro-Genetic implementation with Back Propagation Neural Network (BPN) is suggested in this article to diagnose the fault more efficiently and almost instantly. It is reported that the classifica-tion of neural network will provide the output within 2 µs although the clone procedure with mi-crocontroller requires 7 ms. This intelligent control with high performance technique is applied to the IMD fed by Voltage Source Inverter (VSI) to diagnose the fault external to the induction motor occurring in the VSI supply system. The proposed approach was simulated and experimentally validated.publishedVersio

PCA-ANN Based Algorithm for the Determination of Asymmetrical Network Failures of Network-Connected Induction Generators

    Get PDF
Presented in this study is a principal component analysis - artificial neural network based hybrid failure determination system that can make failure determination selectively and rapidly in asymmetrical external failures that might occur on the network side of a grid-connected induction generator. By creating asymmetrical external failures in the developed simulation model, analysis of noisy and unbalanced fluctuations that carry effects of positive, negative and zero sequence in currents were realized. The suggested model depends on entering data taken from the simulation into the artificial neural network model as a training data by being simplified with principal component analysis, in phase-phase, phase-ground and two phase-ground failures. The protection model makes correct classification with acceptable errors in case of above stated failures. However, in current fluctuations caused by sudden load changes and operation under an unbalanced load, it may remain insensitive by behaving selectively

Producción CientíficaDespite the complex mathematical models and physical phenomena on which it is based, the simplicity of its construction, its affordability, the versatility of its applications and the relative ease of its control have made the electric induction motor an essential element in a considerable number of processes at the industrial and domestic levels, in which it converts electrical energy into mechanical energy. The importance of this type of machine for the continuity of operation, mainly in industry, is such that, in addition to being an important part of the study programs of careers related to this branch of electrical engineering, a large number of investigations into monitoring, detecting and quickly diagnosing its incipient faults due to a variety of factors have been conducted. This bibliographic research aims to analyze the conceptual aspects of the first discoveries that served as the basis for the invention of the induction motor, ranging from the development of the Fourier series, the Fourier transform mathematical formula in its different forms and the measurement, treatment and analysis of signals to techniques based on artificial intelligence and soft computing. This research also includes topics of interest such as fault types and their classification according to the engine, software and hardware parts used and modern approaches or maintenance strategies

This paper aims to offer an overview of the research on induction machines in Eastern Europe. To this end, it reviews all papers published on the topic between 2010 and 2017, in the six most prestigious Eastern European journals. The main findings show that: (1) researchers focus on the induction machine as used in electrical drives, their major research interest being the torque or speed control improvement; (2) in spite of the International Electrotechnical Committee’s (IEC) new requirements to improve the efficiency of electric machines, this topic is almost inexistent among the studies published in Eastern European journal
