Weakly-supervised Micro- and Macro-expression Spotting Based on Multi-level Consistency

Most micro- and macro-expression spotting methods in untrimmed videos suffer from the burden of video-wise collection and frame-wise annotation. Weakly-supervised expression spotting (WES) based on video-level labels can potentially mitigate the complexity of frame-level annotation while achieving fine-grained frame-level spotting. However, we argue that existing weakly-supervised methods are based on multiple instance learning (MIL) involving inter-modality, inter-sample, and inter-task gaps. The inter-sample gap is primarily from the sample distribution and duration. Therefore, we propose a novel and simple WES framework, MC-WES, using multi-consistency collaborative mechanisms that include modal-level saliency, video-level distribution, label-level duration and segment-level feature consistency strategies to implement fine frame-level spotting with only video-level labels to alleviate the above gaps and merge prior knowledge. The modal-level saliency consistency strategy focuses on capturing key correlations between raw images and optical flow. The video-level distribution consistency strategy utilizes the difference of sparsity in temporal distribution. The label-level duration consistency strategy exploits the difference in the duration of facial muscles. The segment-level feature consistency strategy emphasizes that features under the same labels maintain similarity. Experimental results on three challenging datasets -- CAS(ME)2^2, CAS(ME)3^3, and SAMM-LV -- demonstrate that MC-WES is comparable to state-of-the-art fully-supervised methods

Micro Expression Spotting through Appearance Based Descriptor and Distance Analysis

Micro-Expressions (MEs) are a typical kind of expressions which are subtle and short lived in nature and reveal the hidden emotion of human beings. Due to processing an entire video, the MEs recognition constitutes huge computational burden and also consumes more time. Hence, MEs spotting is required which locates the exact frames at which the movement of ME persists. Spotting is regarded as a primary step for MEs recognition. This paper proposes a new method for ME spotting which comprises three stages; pre-processing, feature extraction and discrimination. Pre-processing aligns the facial region in every frame based on three landmark points derived from three landmark regions. To do alignment, an in-plane rotation matrix is used which rotates the non-aligned coordinates into aligned coordinates. For feature extraction, two texture based descriptors are deployed; they are Local Binary Pattern (LBP) and Local Mean Binary Pattern (LMBP). Finally at discrimination stage, Feature Difference Analysis is employed through Chi-Squared Distance (CSD) and the distance of each frame is compared with a threshold to spot there frames namely Onset, Apex and Offset. Simulation done over a Standard CASME dataset and performance is verified through Feature Difference and F1-Score. The obtained results prove that the proposed method is superior than the state-of-the-art methods

Background: The current study aims to compare the use of tamoxifen and oral contraceptive pills in women using implanon and complain with irregular uterine bleeding. Methods: Women attended family planning clinic using implanon presented by bleeding were invited to participate in the study. They were randomized into two groups: Group A: 100 women received Tamoxifen 10 mg twice daily for 10 days taken at the onset of an episode of bleeding or spotting episode. Group B: 100 women received Combined oral contraceptive pills (microcept) once daily for 21 days take at the onset of an episode of bleeding or spotting episode. Results: No difference regarding the baseline criteria of both groups. No difference between both groups regarding the duration of irregular bleeding in the implanon users (p=0.090). Additionally, the number of bleeding days and spotting in the last month was similar in both groups (p=0.554). The percentage of women who stopped bleeding during the period of treatment is 84% in the tamoxifen group and 92% in the COCs group, but the COCs needs longer treatment time, where the mean of days required to stop bleeding is 5.03±1.8 days in the tamoxifen group and 6.5±2.5 in the COCs group. Headache and nausea were the most prominent adverse effects found in the COCs group (p=0.000).Conclusions: Oral administration of tamoxifen 10 mg twice daily for 10 days is effective on stopping bleeding attacks in implanon users
