Coordination Dynamics meets Active Inference and Artificial Intelligence (CD + AI2):A multi-pronged approach to understanding the dynamics of brain and the emergence of conscious agency
How do humans discover their ability to act on the world? By tethering a babyâs foot to a mobile (Fig. 1a) and measuring the motion of both in 3D, we explore how babies begin to make sense of their coordinative relationship with the world and realize their ability to make things happen (N= 16; mean age = 100.33 days). Machine and deep learning classification architectures (e.g., CapsNet) indicate that functionally connecting infants to a mobile via a tether influences the baby movement most where it matters, namely at the point of infantâŒworld connection (Table 1). Using dynamics as a guide, we have developed tools to identify the moment an infant switches from spontaneous to intentional action (Fig. 1b). Preliminary coordination dynamics analysis and active inference generative modeling indicate that moments of stillness hold important epistemic value for young infants discovering their ability to change the world around them (Fig. 1c). Finally, a model of slow~fast brain coordination dynamics based on a 3D extension of the Jirsa-Kelso Excitator successfully simulated the evolution of tethered foot activity as infants transition from spontaneous to ordered action. By tuning a small number of parameters, this model captures patterns of emergent goal-directed action (Fig. 1d). Meshing concepts, methods and tools of Active Inference, Artificial Intelligence and Coordination Dynamics at multiple levels of description, the CD + AI2 program of research aims to identify key control parameters that shift the infant system from spontaneous to intentional behavior. The potent combination of mathematical modeling and quantitative analysis along with empirical study allow us to express the emergence of agency in quantifiable, lawful terms
Self-organization in Communicating Groups: the emergence of coordination, shared references and collective intelligence\ud
The present paper will sketch the basic ideas of the complexity paradigm, and then apply them to social systems, and in particular to groups of communicating individuals who together need to agree about how to tackle some problem or how to coordinate their actions. I will elaborate these concepts to provide an integrated foundation for a theory of self-organization, to be understood as a non-linear process of spontaneous coordination between actions. Such coordination will be shown to consist of the following components: alignment, division of labor, workflow and aggregation. I will then review some paradigmatic simulations and experiments that illustrate the alignment of references and communicative conventions between communicating agents. Finally, the paper will summarize the preliminary results of a series of experiments that I devised in order to observe the emergence of collective intelligence within a communicating group, and interpret these observations in terms of alignment, division of labor and workflow
Seven properties of self-organization in the human brain
The principle of self-organization has acquired a fundamental significance in the newly emerging field of computational philosophy. Self-organizing systems have been described in various domains in science and philosophy including physics, neuroscience, biology and medicine, ecology, and sociology. While system architecture and their general purpose may depend on domain-specific concepts and definitions, there are (at least) seven key properties of self-organization clearly identified in brain systems: 1) modular connectivity, 2) unsupervised learning, 3) adaptive ability, 4) functional resiliency, 5) functional plasticity, 6) from-local-to-global functional organization, and 7) dynamic system growth. These are defined here in the light of insight from neurobiology, cognitive neuroscience and Adaptive Resonance Theory (ART), and physics to show that self-organization achieves stability and functional plasticity while minimizing structural system complexity. A specific example informed by empirical research is discussed to illustrate how modularity, adaptive learning, and dynamic network growth enable stable yet plastic somatosensory representation for human grip force control. Motility at the origin of life: Its characterization and a model
Due to recent advances in synthetic biology and artificial life, the origin
of life is currently a hot topic of research. We review the literature and
argue that the two traditionally competing "replicator-first" and
"metabolism-first" approaches are merging into one integrated theory of
individuation and evolution. We contribute to the maturation of this more
inclusive approach by highlighting some problematic assumptions that still lead
to an impoverished conception of the phenomenon of life. In particular, we
argue that the new consensus has so far failed to consider the relevance of
intermediate timescales. We propose that an adequate theory of life must
account for the fact that all living beings are situated in at least four
distinct timescales, which are typically associated with metabolism, motility,
development, and evolution. On this view, self-movement, adaptive behavior and
morphological changes could have already been present at the origin of life. In
order to illustrate this possibility we analyze a minimal model of life-like
phenomena, namely of precarious, individuated, dissipative structures that can
be found in simple reaction-diffusion systems. Based on our analysis we suggest
that processes in intermediate timescales could have already been operative in
prebiotic systems. They may have facilitated and constrained changes occurring
in the faster- and slower-paced timescales of chemical self-individuation and

This article lists fourteen open problems in artificial life, each of which is a grand challenge requiring a major advance on a fundamental issue for its solution. Each problem is briefly explained, and, where deemed helpful, some promising paths to its solution are indicated
A novel plasticity rule can explain the development of sensorimotor intelligence
Grounding autonomous behavior in the nervous system is a fundamental
challenge for neuroscience. In particular, the self-organized behavioral
development provides more questions than answers. Are there special functional
units for curiosity, motivation, and creativity? This paper argues that these
features can be grounded in synaptic plasticity itself, without requiring any
higher level constructs. We propose differential extrinsic plasticity (DEP) as
a new synaptic rule for self-learning systems and apply it to a number of
complex robotic systems as a test case. Without specifying any purpose or goal,
seemingly purposeful and adaptive behavior is developed, displaying a certain
level of sensorimotor intelligence. These surprising results require no system
specific modifications of the DEP rule but arise rather from the underlying
mechanism of spontaneous symmetry breaking due to the tight
brain-body-environment coupling. The new synaptic rule is biologically
plausible and it would be an interesting target for a neurobiolocal
investigation. We also argue that this neuronal mechanism may have been a

Emerging Consciousness as a Result of Complex-Dynamical Interaction Process
A quite general interaction process within a multi-component system is analysed by the extended effective potential method, liberated from usual limitations of perturbation theory or integrable model. The obtained causally complete solution of the many-body problem reveals the phenomenon of dynamic multivaluedness, or redundance, of emerging, incompatible system realisations and dynamic entanglement of system components within each realisation. The ensuing concept of dynamic complexity (and related intrinsic chaoticity) is absolutely universal and can be applied to the problem of consciousness that emerges now as a high enough, properly specified level of unreduced complexity of a suitable interaction process. This complexity level can be identified with the appearance of bound, permanently localised states in the multivalued brain dynamics from strongly chaotic states of unconscious intelligence, by analogy with classical behaviour emergence from quantum states at much lower levels of world dynamics. We show that the main properties of this dynamically emerging consciousness (and intelligence, at the preceding complexity level) correspond to empirically derived properties of natural versions and obtain causally substantiated conclusions about their artificial realisation, including the fundamentally justified paradigm of genuine machine consciousness. This rigorously defined machine consciousness is different from both natural consciousness and any mechanistic, dynamically single-valued imitation of the latter. We use then the same, truly universal concept of complexity to derive equally rigorous conclusions about mental and social implications of the machine consciousness paradigm, demonstrating its indispensable role in the next stage of civilisation development
