    Electrodynamic bearings (EDBs) are passive magnetic bearings that exploit the interaction between eddy currents developed in a rotating conductor and a static magnetic field to generate forces. Similar to other types of magnetic suspensions, EDBs provide contactless support, thus avoiding problems with lubrication, friction and wear. Electrodynamic bearings have also drawbacks such as the difficulty in insuring a stable levitation in a wide speed range.     The spinning rotor gauge (SRG) is one of the most interesting vacuum gauges ever made, covering a pressure range of over seven orders of magnitude, with minimal gas interference (no pumping, ionization or heating of the measured gas), and a great stability of less than 1% drift per year. But despite its remarkable properties, apparently the SRG has not been further developed since the eighties, when it gained commercial interest. In this context, this dissertation aims at providing a starting point for a new line of investigation regarding this instrument, focused on the rotor itself. A brief study of different rotor geometries is provided, including a comparison between a cylindrical rotor and a spherical one. A cylindrical spinning rotor gauge (CSRG) is then proposed, based on the original SRG, but requiring a completely new lateral damping system.     A permanent magnet can be levitated simply by placing it in the vicinity of another permanent magnet that rotates in the order of 200 Hz. This surprising effect can be easily reproduced in the lab with off-the-shelf components. Here we investigate this novel type of magnetic levitation experimentally and clarify the underlying physics. Using a 19 mm diameter spherical NdFeB magnet as rotor magnet, we capture the detailed motion of levitating, spherical NdFeB magnets, denoted floater magnets. We find that as levitation occurs, the floater magnet frequency-locks with the rotor magnet, and, noticeably, that the magnetization of the floater is oriented close to the axis of rotation and towards the like pole of the rotor magnet. This is in contrast to what might be expected by the laws of magnetostatics as the floater is observed to align its magnetization essentially perpendicular to the magnetic field of the rotor. Moreover, we find that the size of the floater has a clear influence on the levitation: the smaller the floater, the higher the rotor speed necessary to achieve levitation, and the further away the levitation point shifts. We verify that magnetostatic interactions between the rotating magnets are responsible for creating the equilibrium position of the floater. Hence, this type of magnetic levitation does not rely on gravity as a balancing force to achieve an equilibrium position. Based on theoretical arguments and a numerical model, we show that a constant, vertical field and eddy-current enhanced damping is sufficient to produce levitation from rest. This enables a gyroscopically stabilised counter-intuitive steady-state moment orientation, and the resulting magnetostatically stable, mid-air equilibrium point. The numerical model display the same trends with respect to rotation speed and the floater magnet size as seen in the experiments.Comment: 15 pages, 6 figures, 10 videos + 8 pages supplementary material.     Nonlinear dynamics of attractive magnetic bearings

    The nonlinear dynamics of a ferromagnetic shaft suspended by the force of attraction of 1, 2, or 4 independent electromagnets is presented. Each model includes a state variable feedback controller which has been designed using the pole placement method. The constitutive relationships for the magnets are derived analytically from magnetic circuit theory, and the effects of induced eddy currents due to the rotation of the journal are included using Maxwell's field relations. A rotor suspended by four electro-magnets with closed loop feedback is shown to have nine equilibrium points within the bearing clearance space. As the rotor spin speed increases, the system is shown to pass through a Hopf bifurcation (a flutter instability). Using center manifold theory, this bifurcation can be shown to be of the subcritical type, indicating an unstable limit cycle below the critical speed. The bearing is very sensitive to initial conditions, and the equilibrium position is easily upset by transient excitation. The results are confirmed by numerical simulation

    Dissipation-Induced Heteroclinic Orbits in Tippe Tops

    This paper demonstrates that the conditions for the existence of a dissipation-induced heteroclinic orbit between the inverted and noninverted states of a tippe top are determined by a complex version of the equations for a simple harmonic oscillator: the modified Maxwell–Bloch equations. A standard linear analysis reveals that the modified Maxwell–Bloch equations describe the spectral instability of the noninverted state and Lyapunov stability of the inverted state. Standard nonlinear analysis based on the energy momentum method gives necessary and sufficient conditions for the existence of a dissipation-induced connecting orbit between these relative equilibria

    Magnetic Suspension and Balance Systems: A Comprehensive, Annotated Bibliography

    This bibliography contains 301 entries. Results are reported of recent studies aimed at increasing the research capabilities of magnetic suspension and balance systems; e.g., increasing force and torque capability, increasing angle of attack capability, and increasing overall system reliability. The problem is addressed of scaling from the relatively small size of existing systems to much larger sizes. The purpose of the bibliography is to provide an up-to-date list of publications that might be helpful to persons interested in magnetic suspension and balance systems for use in wind tunnels. The arrangement is generally chronological by date of presentation. However, papers presented at conferences or meetings are placed under dates of presentation. The numbers assigned to many of the citations have been changed from those used in the previous bibliography. This has been done in order to allow outdated citations to be removed and some recently discovered older works to be included in their proper chronological order. Author, source, and subject indexes are included in order to increase the usefulness of this compilation

    Design and Development of a Next Generation Energy Storage Flywheel

    Energy storage is crucial for both smart grids and renewable energy sources such as wind or solar, which are intermittent in nature. Compared to electrochemical batteries, flywheel energy storage systems (FESSs) offer many unique benefits such as low environmental impact, high power quality, and larger life cycles. This dissertation presents the design and development of a novel utility-scale FESS that features a shaftless, hubless rotor. The unique shaftless design gives it the potential of a doubled energy density and a compact form factor. Its energy and power capacities are 100 kWh and 100 kW, respectively. The flywheel is made of high-strength steel, which makes it much easier to manufacture, assemble, and recycle. Steels also cost much less than composite materials. In addition, the system incorporates a new combination active magnetic bearing. Its working principle and the levitation control for the flywheel are presented. The development of an integrated, coreless, permanent-magnet (PM) motor/generator for the flywheel is briefly discussed as well. Initial test results show that the magnetic bearing provides stable levitation for the 5443-kg flywheel with small current consumptions. Furthermore, this dissertation formulates and synthesizes a detailed model for designing and simulating a closed-loop control system for the proposed flywheel system at high speed. To this end, the magnetic bearing supporting structure is considered flexible and modeled by finite element modeling. The magnetic bearing is characterized experimentally by static and frequency-dependent coefficients, the latter of which are caused by eddy current effects and presents challenges to the levitation control. Sensor- runout disturbances are measured and included in the model. System nonlinearities in power amplifiers and the controller are considered as well. Even though the flywheel has a large ratio of the primary-to-transversal moment of inertias, Multi-Input-Multi-Output (MIMO) feedback control demonstrates its effectiveness in canceling gyroscopic torques and stabilize the system. Various stages of PD controllers, lead/lag compensators, and notch filters are also implemented to suppress the high-frequency sensor disturbances and structural vibrations
