    PSO BASED TAKAGI-SUGENO FUZZY PID CONTROLLER DESIGN FOR SPEED CONTROL OF PERMANENT MAGNET SYNCHRONOUS MOTOR

    A permanent magnet synchronous motor (PMSM) is one kind of popular motor. They are utilized in industrial applications because their abilities included operation at a constant speed, no need for an excitation current, no rotor losses, and small size. In the following paper, a fuzzy evolutionary algorithm is combined with a proportional-integral-derivative (PID) controller to control the speed of a PMSM. In this structure, to overcome the PMSM challenges, including nonlinear nature, cross-coupling, air gap flux, and cogging torque in operation, a Takagi-Sugeno fuzzy logic-PID (TSFL-PID) controller is designed. Additionally, the particle swarm optimization (PSO) algorithm is developed to optimize the membership functions' parameters and rule bases of the fuzzy logic PID controller. For evaluating the proposed controller's performance, the genetic algorithm (GA), as another evolutionary algorithm, is incorporated into the fuzzy PID controller. The results of the speed control of PMSM are compared. The obtained results demonstrate that although both controllers have excellent performance; however, the PSO based TSFL-PID controller indicates more superiority

    Operation Efficiency Optimization for Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motor Based on Improved Particle Swarm Optimization

    In this paper, an improved online particle swarm optimization (PSO) is proposed to optimize the traditional search controller for improving the operating efficiency of the permanent magnet synchronous motor (PMSM). This algorithm combines the advantages of the attraction and repulsion PSO and the distributed PSO that can help the search controller to find the optimal d - axis air gap current quickly and accurately under non-stationary operating conditions, thereby minimizing the air gap flux and then improving the motor efficiency. To verify the effectiveness and stability of this proposed algorithm, the operating efficiency of PMSM as using this proposed algorithm is compared with that of traditional search controller under non-stationary operating conditions. The results show that the proposed algorithm can improve the operating efficiency of PMSM by 6.03% on average under non-stationary operation conditions. This indicates that the search controller based on the improved PSO has a better adaptation to the variation of external operating conditions, and can improve the operation efficiency of PMSM under non-stationary condition

    GPU Implementation of DPSO-RE Algorithm for Parameters Identification of Surface PMSM Considering VSI Nonlinearity

    In this paper, an accurate parameter estimation model of surface permanent magnet synchronous machines (SPMSMs) is established by taking into account voltage-source-inverter (VSI) nonlinearity. A fast dynamic particle swarm optimization (DPSO) algorithm combined with a receptor editing (RE) strategy is proposed to explore the optimal values of parameter estimations. This combination provides an accelerated implementation on graphics processing unit (GPU), and the proposed method is, therefore, referred to as G-DPSORE. In G-DPSO-RE, a dynamic labor division strategy is incorporated into the swarms according to the designed evolutionary factor during the evolution process. Two novel modifications of the movement equation are designed to update the velocity of particles. Moreover, a chaotic-logistic-based immune RE operator is developed to facilitate the global best individual (gBest particle) to explore a potentially better region. Furthermore, a GPU parallel acceleration technique is utilized to speed up parameter estimation procedure. It has been demonstrated that the proposed method is effective for simultaneous estimation of the PMSM parameters and the disturbance voltage (Vdead) due to VSI nonlinearity from experimental data for currents and rotor speed measured with inexpensive equipment.     Global identification of electrical and mechanical parameters in PMSM drive based on dynamic self-learning PSO

    A global parameter estimation method for a PMSM drive system is proposed, where the electrical parameters, mechanical parameters and voltage-source-inverter (VSI) nonlinearity are regarded as a whole and parameter estimation is formulated as a single parameter optimization model. A dynamic learning estimator is proposed for tracking the electrical parameters, mechanical parameters and VSI of PMSM drive by using dynamic self learning particle swarm optimization (DSLPSO). In DSLPSO, a novel movement modification equation with dynamic exemplar learning strategy is designed to ensure its diversity and achieve a reasonable tradeoff between the exploitation and exploration during the search process. Moreover, a nonlinear multi-scale based interactive learning operator is introduced for accelerating the convergence speed of the Pbest particles; meanwhile a dynamic opposition-based learning (OBL) strategy is designed to facilitate the gBest particle to explore a potentially better region. The proposed algorithm is applied to parameter estimation for a PMSM drive system. The results show that the proposed method has better performance in tracking the variation of electrical parameters, and estimating the immeasurable mechanical parameters and the VSI disturbance voltage simultaneously

    Estimation of Stator Resistance and Rotor Flux Linkage in SPMSM Using CLPSO with Opposition-Based-Learning Strategy

    Electromagnetic parameters are important for controller design and condition monitoring of permanent magnet synchronous machine (PMSM) system. In this paper, an improved comprehensive learning particle swarm optimization (CLPSO) with opposition-based-learning (OBL) strategy is proposed for estimating stator resistance and rotor flux linkage in surface-mounted PMSM; the proposed method is referred to as CLPSO-OBL. In the CLPSO-OBL framework, an opposition-learning strategy is used for best particles reinforcement learning to improve the dynamic performance and global convergence ability of the CLPSO. The proposed parameter optimization not only retains the advantages of diversity in the CLPSO but also has inherited global exploration capability of the OBL. Then, the proposed method is applied to estimate the stator resistance and rotor flux linkage of surface-mounted PMSM. The experimental results show that the CLPSO-OBL has better performance in estimating winding resistance and PM flux compared to the existing peer PSOs. Furthermore, the proposed parameter estimation model and optimization method are simple and with good accuracy, fast convergence, and easy digital implementation

    Parameter estimation for VSI-Fed PMSM based on a dynamic PSO with learning strategies

    © 1986-2012 IEEE.A dynamic particle swarm optimization with learning strategy (DPSO-LS) is proposed for key parameter estimation for permanent magnet synchronous machines (PMSMs), where the voltage-source inverter (VSI) nonlinearities are taken into account in the parameter estimation model and can be estimated simultaneously with other machine parameters. In the DPSO-LS algorithm, a novel movement modification equation with variable exploration vector is designed to effectively update particles, enabling swarms to cover large areas of search space with large probability and thus the global search ability is enhanced. Moreover, a Gaussian-distribution-based dynamic opposition-based learning strategy is developed to help the pBest jump out local optima. The proposed DPSO-LS can significantly enhance the estimator model accuracy and dynamic performance. Finally, the proposed algorithm is applied to multiple parameter estimation including the VSI nonlinearities of a PMSM. The performance of DPSO-LS is compared with several existing PSO algorithms, and the comparison results show that the proposed parameters estimation method has better performance in tracking the variation of machine parameters effectively and estimating the VSI nonlinearities under different operation conditions

    High performance position control for permanent magnet synchronous drives

    In the design and test of electric drive control systems, computer simulations provide a useful way to verify the correctness and efficiency of various schemes and control algorithms before the final system is actually constructed, therefore, development time and associated costs are reduced. Nevertheless, the transition from the simulation stage to the actual implementation has to be as straightforward as possible. This document presents the design and implementation of a position control system for permanent magnet synchronous drives, including a review and comparison of various related works about non-linear control systems applied to this type of machine. The overall electric drive control system is simulated and tested in Proteus VSM software which is able to simulate the interaction between the firmware running on a microcontroller and analogue circuits connected to it. The dsPIC33FJ32MC204 is used as the target processor to implement the control algorithms. The electric drive model is developed using elements existing in the Proteus VSM library. As in any high performance electric drive system, field oriented control is applied to achieve accurate torque control. The complete control system is distributed in three control loops, namely torque, speed and position. A standard PID control system, and a hybrid control system based on fuzzy logic are implemented and tested. The natural variation of motor parameters, such as winding resistance and magnetic flux are also simulated. Comparisons between the two control schemes are carried out for speed and position using different error measurements, such as, integral square error, integral absolute error and root mean squared error. Comparison results show a superior performance of the hybrid fuzzy-logic-based controller when coping with parameter variations, and by reducing torque ripple, but the results are reversed when periodical torque disturbances are present. Finally, the speed controllers are implemented and evaluated physically in a testbed based on a brushless DC motor, with the control algorithms implemented on a dsPIC30F2010. The comparisons carried out for the speed controllers are consistent for both simulation and physical implementation

    Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motor Design using Grey Wolf Optimizer Algorithm

    Common high-torque low-speed motor drive schemes combine an induction motor coupled to the load by a mechanical subsystem which consists of gears, belt/pulleys or camshafts. Consequently, these setups present an inherent drawback regarding to maintenance needs, high costs and overall system deficiency. Thus, the replacement of such a conventional drive with a properly designed low speed permanent magnet synchronous motor (PMSM) directly coupled to the load, provides an attractive alternative. In this context, the paper deals with the design evaluation of a 5kW/50rpm radial flux PMSM with surface-mounted permanent magnets and inner rotor topology. Since the main goal is the minimization of the machine's total losses and therefore the maximization of its efficiency, the design is conducted by solving an optimization problem. For this purpose, the application of a new meta-heuristic optimization method called “Grey Wolf Optimizer” is studied. The effectiveness of the method in finding appropriate PMSM designs is then evaluated. The obtained results of the applied method reveal satisfactorily enhanced design solutions and performance when compared with those of other optimization techniques

    Energy management for hybrid electric vehicles using rule based strategy and PI control tuned by particle swarming optimization algorithm

    Recently, hybrid electric vehicles are increasingly being used to replace conventional vehicles. In this paper, a control methodology is designed that can reduce fuel consumption and improve the vehicle’s dynamic response. As the control unit based on this methodology consists of two levels, the first depends on the application of a rule-based strategy for energy management between the main components of the vehicle, and this strategy is based on a set of rules that are activated according to parameters such as vehicle speed and the battery state of charge (SOC) that control the activation/deactivation of the internal combustion engine (ICE), motor, and generator. This level also makes ICE operate at operation points with high efficiency, which is represented by the optimal operating line (OOL). The second level is called the low control level, and it consists of two proportional-integral (PI) controllers used to control the speed of each ICE and the motor to obtain the appropriate torque for both of them to drive the vehicle properly. The particle swarming optimization (PSO) algorithm is utilized to tune the parameters of the PI controllers. The obtained results have effectively minimized fuel consumption and improved the performance of the vehicle
