    In systems composed of multiple autonomous agents, negotiation is a key form of interaction that enables groups of agents to arrive at a mutual agreement regarding some belief, goal or plan, for example. Particularly because the agents are autonomous and cannot be assumed to be benevolent, agents must influence others to convince them to act in certain ways, and negotiation is thus critical for managing such inter-agent dependencies. The process of negotiation may be of many different forms, such as auctions, protocols in the style of the contract net, and argumentation, but it is unclear just how sophisticated the agents or the protocols for interaction must be for successful negotiation in different contexts. All these issues were raised in the panel session on negotiation

    Web based applications for Supply Chain Management (SCM) are now a necessity for every company in order to meet the increasing customer demands, to face the global competition and to make profit. Multiagent-based approach is appropriate for eSCM because it shows many of the characteristics a SCM system should have. For this reason, we have proposed a multiagent-based eSCM model which configures a virtual SC, automates the SC activities: selling, purchasing, manufacturing, planning, inventory, etc. This model will allow a better coordination of the supply chain network and will increase the effectiveness of Web and intel-ligent technologies employed in eSCM software

    On Automated Message Processing in Electronic Commerce and Work Support Systems: Speech Act Theory and Expressive Felicity

    Electronic messaging, whether in an office environment or for electronic commerce, is normally carried out in natural language, even when supported by information systems. For a variety of reasons, it would be useful if electronic messaging systems could have semantic access to, that is, access to the meanings and contents of, the messages they process. Given that natural language understanding is not a practicable alternative, there remain three approaches to delivering systems with semantic access: electronic data interchange (EDI), tagged messages, and the development of a formal language for business communication (FLBC). We favor the latter approach. In this article we compare and contrast these three approaches, present a theoretical basis for an FLBC (using speech act theory), and describe a prototype implementation

    KEMNAD: A Knowledge Engineering Methodology for Negotiating Agent Development

    Automated negotiation is widely applied in various domains. However, the development of such systems is a complex knowledge and software engineering task. So, a methodology there will be helpful. Unfortunately, none of existing methodologies can offer sufficient, detailed support for such system development. To remove this limitation, this paper develops a new methodology made up of: (1) a generic framework (architectural pattern) for the main task, and (2) a library of modular and reusable design pattern (templates) of subtasks. Thus, it is much easier to build a negotiating agent by assembling these standardised components rather than reinventing the wheel each time. Moreover, since these patterns are identified from a wide variety of existing negotiating agents(especially high impact ones), they can also improve the quality of the final systems developed. In addition, our methodology reveals what types of domain knowledge need to be input into the negotiating agents. This in turn provides a basis for developing techniques to acquire the domain knowledge from human users. This is important because negotiation agents act faithfully on the behalf of their human users and thus the relevant domain knowledge must be acquired from the human users. Finally, our methodology is validated with one high impact system

    A Generic Integrated Intelligent Agent (GIIA) for electronic business

    Intelligent agent is a program that automates our interactions on the Web. It is a program that performs functions such as information gathering, information filtering, or mediation (running in the background) on behalf of a person or entity. This marvelous program can be delegated to do among others, the following tasks: to make airline and hotel reservations, to order new books from an online store, to find out about the latest song from a favorite musician, or to monitor stock portfolios.Some of the more sophisticated intelligent agents can even negotiate the purchase of raw materials for a factory, schedule factory production, negotiate delivery schedules with a customer's intelligent agent, and automate the billing process.As a body of knowledge, intelligent agent is indeed, an area extensively researched.However, most of the existing intelligent agents are not generic in the sense that they are not designed to be compatible with one another and the interfaces including the navigational systems are often cumbersome to use. Thus, a Generic Integrated Intelligent Agent (GIIA) is proposed to be developed in order to overcome the two major limitations of the available intelligent agents mentioned earlier. The GIIA should be able to integrate the existing agents capabilities into one powerful system (by making the system generic enough for a multipurpose usage) and also by providing a single, common and friendly user interface for the whole activities need to be run by the agentā€™s user.The GIIA architecture to be built should fulfill all the following six systems requirements: open, extensible, distributed, parallel, mobile and multimodal.As electronic commerce is now fast becoming trend which simplifies lives, it is expected that electronic commerce applications such as GIIA will enhance the living quality of its users
