Detecting replay attacks in audiovisual identity verification
We describe an algorithm that detects a lack of correspondence between speech and lip motion by detecting and monitoring the degree of synchrony between live audio and visual signals. It is simple, effective, and computationally inexpensive; providing a useful degree of robustness against basic replay attacks and against speech or image forgeries. The method is based on a cross-correlation analysis between two streams of features, one from the audio signal and the other from the image sequence. We argue that such an algorithm forms an effective first barrier against several kinds of replay attack that would defeat existing verification systems based on standard multimodal fusion techniques. In order to provide an evaluation mechanism for the new technique we have augmented the protocols that accompany the BANCA multimedia corpus by defining new scenarios. We obtain 0% equal-error rate (EER) on the simplest scenario and 35% on a more challenging one

Access to recorded interviews: A research agenda
Recorded interviews form a rich basis for scholarly inquiry. Examples include oral histories, community memory projects, and interviews conducted for broadcast media. Emerging technologies offer the potential to radically transform the way in which recorded interviews are made accessible, but this vision will demand substantial investments from a broad range of research communities. This article reviews the present state of practice for making recorded interviews available and the state-of-the-art for key component technologies. A large number of important research issues are identified, and from that set of issues, a coherent research agenda is proposed
mARC: Memory by Association and Reinforcement of Contexts
This paper introduces the memory by Association and Reinforcement of Contexts
(mARC). mARC is a novel data modeling technology rooted in the second
quantization formulation of quantum mechanics. It is an all-purpose incremental
and unsupervised data storage and retrieval system which can be applied to all
types of signal or data, structured or unstructured, textual or not. mARC can
be applied to a wide range of information clas-sification and retrieval
problems like e-Discovery or contextual navigation. It can also for-mulated in
the artificial life framework a.k.a Conway "Game Of Life" Theory. In contrast
to Conway approach, the objects evolve in a massively multidimensional space.
In order to start evaluating the potential of mARC we have built a mARC-based
Internet search en-gine demonstrator with contextual functionality. We compare
the behavior of the mARC demonstrator with Google search both in terms of
performance and relevance. In the study we find that the mARC search engine
demonstrator outperforms Google search by an order of magnitude in response
time while providing more relevant results for some classes of queries
Automatic Summarization of Soccer Highlights Using Audio-visual Descriptors
Automatic summarization generation of sports video content has been object of
great interest for many years. Although semantic descriptions techniques have
been proposed, many of the approaches still rely on low-level video descriptors
that render quite limited results due to the complexity of the problem and to
the low capability of the descriptors to represent semantic content. In this
paper, a new approach for automatic highlights summarization generation of
soccer videos using audio-visual descriptors is presented. The approach is
based on the segmentation of the video sequence into shots that will be further
analyzed to determine its relevance and interest. Of special interest in the
approach is the use of the audio information that provides additional
robustness to the overall performance of the summarization system. For every
video shot a set of low and mid level audio-visual descriptors are computed and
lately adequately combined in order to obtain different relevance measures
based on empirical knowledge rules. The final summary is generated by selecting
those shots with highest interest according to the specifications of the user
and the results of relevance measures. A variety of results are presented with
real soccer video sequences that prove the validity of the approach
Les recommandations officielles proposées pour remplacer les anglicismes dans le Petit Robert de la langue française
The dictionary Petit Robert leads a fight against both the single thought and the impoverished expression by offering a very broad vision of the practices of French. A certain number of anglicisms, very frequent among the new entries of this dictionary, are considered questionable, insofar as the prestige and the economic and techno-scientific power of the United States give rise to a wave of borrowed words, even when the lexicon has suitable French synonyms. The Petit Robert indicates which words in French are recommended by the Commission générale de la terminologie et de néologie to replace the anglicisms. The objective of this study is to observe the English words recently introduced in this dictionary and the different French equivalent terms proposed to oust them. Could the official recommendations supplant the loanwords and become fixed in practice?
Cybraries in paradise: new technologies and ethnographic repositories.
Digital technologies are altering research practices surrounding creation and use of ethnographic field recordings, and the methodologies and paradigms of the disciplines centered around their interpretation. In this chapter we discuss some examples of our current research practices as fieldworkers in active engagement with cultural heritage communities documenting music and language in the Asia- Pacific region, and as developers and curators of the digital repository PARADISEC (the Pacific and Regional Archive for Digital Sources in Endangered Cultures: ). We suggest a number of benefits that the use of digital technologies can bring to the recording of material from small and endangered cultures, and to its re-use by communities and researchers. We believe it is a matter of social justice as well as scientific interest that ethnographic recordings held in higher education institutions should be preserved and made accessible to future generations. We argue that, with appropriate planning and care by researchers, digitization of research recordings in audiovisual media can facilitate access by remote communities to records of their cultural heritage held in higher education institutions to a far greater extent than was possible in the analog age.Australian Research Counci
