The manipulation of cold atoms with optical fields is a very promising technique for a variety of applications ranging from laser cooling and trapping to coherent atom transport and matter wave interferometry. Optical fields have also been proposed as interesting tools for quantum information processing with cold atoms. In this paper, we present a theoretical study of the dynamics of a cold 87Rb atomic cloud falling in the gravity field in the presence of two crossing dipole guides. The cloud is either deflected or split between the two branches of this guide. We explore the possibilities of optimization of this device and present preliminary results obtained in the case of zero-temperature dilute Bose-Einstein condensates.Comment: Proceedings of the International Spectroscopy Conference ISC-2007, Sousse, Tunisi

Cerium: the lithium substitute in post-AGB stars

    Get PDF
In this letter we present an alternative identification for the line detected in the spectra of s-process enriched low-mass post-AGB stars around 6708A and which was interpreted in the literature as due to Li. Newly released line lists of lanthanide species reveal, however, the likely identification of the line to be due to a CeII transition. We argue that this identification is consistent with the Ce abundance of all the objects discussed in the literature and conclude that in none of the low-mass s-process enriched post-AGB stars there is indication for Li-production.Comment: 5 pages, 2 figures, accepted for publication as A&A Lette

La3TaO7 derivatives with Weberite structure type: Possible electrolytes for solid oxide fuel cells and high temperature electrolysers

In this study, with the aim to enhance the ionic conduction of known structures by defect chemistry, the La2O3-Ta2O5 system was considered with a focus on the La3TaO7 phase whose structure is of Weberite type. In order to predict possible preferential substitution sites and substitution elements, atomistic simulation was used as a first approach. A solid solution La3−xSrxTaO7−x/2 was confirmed by X-ray diffraction and Raman spectroscopy; it extends for a substitution ratio up to x = 0.15. Whereas La3TaO7 is a poor oxide ion conductor (σ700 °C = 2 × 10−5S.cm−1), at 700 °C, its ionic conductivity is increased by more than one order of magnitude when 3.3% molar strontium is introduced in the structure (σ700 °C = 2 × 10−4S.cm−1)

First Results of the EDELWEISS WIMP Search using a 320 g Heat-and-Ionization Ge Detector

The EDELWEISS collaboration has performed a direct search for WIMP dark matter using a 320 g heat-and-ionization cryogenic Ge detector operated in a low-background environment in the Laboratoire Souterrain de Modane. No nuclear recoils are observed in the fiducial volume in the 30-200 keV energy range during an effective exposure of 4.53 kg.days. Limits for the cross-section for the spin-independent interaction of WIMPs and nucleons are set in the framework of the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model (MSSM). The central value of the signal reported by the experiment DAMA is excluded at 90% CL.Comment: 14 pages, Latex, 4 figures. Submitted to Phys. Lett.

In search of space: Fourier spectroscopy, 1950-1970

In the large grey area between science and technology, specialisms emerge with associated specialists. But some specialisms remain ‘peripheral sciences’, never attaining the status of ‘disciplines’ ensconced in universities, and their specialists do not become recognised professionals. A major social component of such side-lined sciences – one important grouping of technoscientific workers – is the ‘research-technology community’. An important question concerning research-technology is to explain how the grouping survives without specialised disciplinary and professional affiliations. The case discussed illustrates the dynamics of one such community

Spectroscopie cérébrale en IRM:: analyse de données et applications de recontructions par le Technicien en radiologie médicale : travail de Bachelor

    Get PDF

New metabolic diseases are regularly identified by a genetic or biochemical approach. Indeed, the metabolic diseases result from an enzymatic block with accumulation of a metabolite upstream to the block and deficit of a metabolite downstream. The characterization of these abnormal metabolites by MRI spectroscopy permitted to identify the deficient enzyme in two new groups of diseases, creatine deficiencies and polyol anomalies. Creatine deficiency is implicated in unspecific mental retardation. A low peak of creatine at MRI spectroscopy is evocating of creatine deficiency which is treatable by creatine administration. Deficiency of synthesis of polyols, metabolites on the pentose pathway, represent new described metabolic diseases with variable symptoms including a neurological distress, liver disease, splenomegaly, cutis laxa and renal insufficiency. The deficit of ribose-5-phosphate isomerase, one of the enzymes whose diagnosis is evoked in front of the accumulation of ribitol, arabitol and xylitol leads to a leucodystrophy in adults. This new deficit was highlighted by the identification of an abnormal peak in cerebral MRI-spectroscopy corresponding to the abnormal accumulation of polyols in brain. Congenital hyperinsulinism (HI) is characterized by profound hypoglycaemia related to inappropriate insulin secretion. Focal and diffuse forms of hyperinsulinism share a similar clinical presentation but their treatment is dramatically different. Until recently, preoperative differential diagnosis was based on pancreatic venous sampling, an invasive and technically demanding technique. Positron emission tomography (PET) after injection of [18F]Fluoro-L-DOPA has been evaluated for the preoperative differentiation between focal and diffuse HI, by imaging uptake of radiotracer and the conversion of [18F]Fluoro-L-DOPA into dopamine by DOPA decarboxylase. PET with [18F]Fluoro-L-DOPA has been validated as a reliable test to differentiate diffuse and focal HI and is now a major differential diagnosis tool in infantile hyperinsulinemic hypoglycaemia
