Carrier Interferometry Coded Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (CI-COFDM) system has been widely studied in multi-carrier communication system. The CI-COFDM system spreads each coded information symbol across all N sub-carriers using orthogonal CI spreading codes. The CI-COFDM system shows the advantages of Peak to Average Power Ratio (PAPR) reduction, frequency diversity and coding gain without any loss of communication throughput. On the other side, a great attention has been devoted to Multi Input Multi Output (MIMO) antenna systems and space-time-frequency processing. In this paper, we focus on two Transmit (Tx)/one Receive (Rx) antennas configuration and evaluate the performance of MIMO OFDM, MIMO CIOFDM and MIMO CI-COFDM systems. Space Frequency Block Coding (SFBC) is applied to MIMO OFDM, MIMO CI-ODFM and MIMO CI-COFDM systems. For CI-COFDM realization, digital implemented CI-COFDM is used in which information conventional is encoded, CI code spreading operation and carrier allocation are processed by IFFT type operation. From simulation results, it is shown that MIMO SFBC CI-COFDM reduces PAPR significantly as compared with that of MIMO SFBC CI-OFDM and MIMO SFBC OFDM systems. In Narrow Band Interference (NBI) channel MIMO SFBC CI-COFDM systems achieve considerable Bit Error Rate (BER) improvement compared with MMO SFBC CI-OFDM and MIMO SFBC OFDM system

The available bandwidth in the radio frequency spectrum is decreasing due to the growing number of applications and users. Therefore, in order to ensure a sustainable evolution in this area it is crucial to develop strategies to optimize the spectrum usage. Joining RADAR and communication functionalities in a single terminal represents exactly this same strategy. As such, the two functionalities, which usually compete for the same radio resources, can coexist through a cooperative relation in which they can thrive and cease to introduce interferences in between them. In this dissertation, the integration of both systems is achieved through the use of OFDM as the common waveform. Through the space time/frequency block codes, namely the Tarokh coding it is possible to introduce spatial diversity and orthogonality to the system, therefore increasing the system’s robustness and allowing to use the virtual antenna concept, which enables improved RADAR resolution and detection. In order to evaluate the system’s performance, a simulation platform was developed. In these simulations we start by firstly considering RADAR detection for single and multiple antenna systems and then integrate the radar and communication functionalities. We have verified the good performance levels of the proposed system, which thanks to its low complexity can be an interesting RadCom approach for future wireless systems.

Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM) is a modulation scheme with numerous advantages that has for years been employed as the leading physical interface in many wired and wireless communication systems. Recently, with advancements made in digital signal processing, there has been a surge of interest in applying OFDM techniques for optical communications. This thesis presents extensive research on optical OFDM and how it is being applied in access networks. With the aid of theoretical analysis, simulations and experiments, it is shown that the system performance of direct-detection optical OFDM (DD-OOFDM) in the presence of MZM non-linear distortion can be improved by proper biasing and selection of appropriate drive to the MZM. Investigations are conducted to illustrate how a variation in the number of subcarriers and the modulation format influences the sensitivity of the DD-OOFDM system to the MZM non-linear distortion. The possibility of improving the spectral efficiency by reduction of the width of the guard band is also investigated. This thesis also looks into the radio-over-fibre (RoF) transmission of Multiband OFDM UWB as a transparent and low-cost solution for distributing multi-Gbit/s data to end-users in FTTH networks. Due to relaxed regulatory requirements and the wide bandwidth available, UWB operation in the 60-GHz band is also considered for this FTTH application scenario. Four techniques for enabling MB-OFDM UWB RoF operation in the 60-GHz band are experimentally demonstrated. The impacts of various parameters on the performance of the techniques as well as the limitations imposed by fibre distribution are illustrated. Finally, a digital pre-distorter is proposed for compensating for the MZM non-linearity. Experimental demonstration of this digital pre-distortion in an UWB over fibre transmission system shows an increased tolerance to the amplitude of the driving OFDM signal as well as an increase in the optimum modulation index of the OFDM signal

A New Approach for Performance Improvement of OFDM System using Pulse Shaping

Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM) is a multi-carrier modulation technique, in which a single high rate data-stream is divided into multiple low rate data-streams and is modulated using sub-carriers, which are orthogonal to each other. Some of its main advantages are multipath delay spread tolerance, high spectral efficiency, efficient modulation and demodulation process using computationally efficient Inverse Fast Fourier Transform and Fast Fourier Transform operation respectively. The peak to average power ratio of the time domain envelope is an important parameter at the physical layer of the communication system using OFDM signaling. The signals must maintain a specified average energy level in the channel to obtain the desired Bit-error-rate. The peak signal level relative to that average defines the maximum dynamic range that must be accommodated by the components in the signal flow path to support the desired average. A secondary concern is the carrier frequency offset which disturbs the orthogonality among the carriers and results ICI. The undesired ICI degrades the performance of the system

Comparison Study of Resource Allocation Strategies for OFDM Multimedia Networks

Advanced MAC scheduling schemes provide efficient support of multimedia services in multiuser OFDM wireless networks. Designed in a cross layer approach, they opportunistically consider the channel state and are well adapted to the wireless multipath fading environment. These schedulers take advantage of time, frequency, and multiuser diversity. Thereby they maximize the global system throughput while ensuring the highest possible level of fairness. However their performances heavily depend on the bandwidth granularity (i.e., the number of elementary resource units) that is used in the resource allocation process. This paper presents and compares the main OFDM scheduling techniques. In particular it studies the influence of bandwidth granularity on the resource allocation strategies performances. The paper reveals that though bandwidth granularity has never been considered in former studies, it is of major importance for determining the application range of advanced OFDM scheduling techniques
