Secure data sharing and processing in heterogeneous clouds

The extensive cloud adoption among the European Public Sector Players empowered them to own and operate a range of cloud infrastructures. These deployments vary both in the size and capabilities, as well as in the range of employed technologies and processes. The public sector, however, lacks the necessary technology to enable effective, interoperable and secure integration of a multitude of its computing clouds and services. In this work we focus on the federation of private clouds and the approaches that enable secure data sharing and processing among the collaborating infrastructures and services of public entities. We investigate the aspects of access control, data and security policy languages, as well as cryptographic approaches that enable fine-grained security and data processing in semi-trusted environments. We identify the main challenges and frame the future work that serve as an enabler of interoperability among heterogeneous infrastructures and services. Our goal is to enable both security and legal conformance as well as to facilitate transparency, privacy and effectivity of private cloud federations for the public sector needs. © 2015 The Authors

Multi-representation Ontology in the Context of Enterprise Information Systems

International audienceIn the last decade, ontologies as shared common vocabulary played a major role in many AI applications and informationintegration for heterogeneous, distributed systems. The problems of integrating and developing information systems anddatabases in heterogeneous, distributed environment have been translated in the technical perspectives as system’sinteroperability. Ontologies, however, are foreseen to play a key role in resolving partially the semantic conflicts anddifferences that exist among systems. Domain ontologies, however, are constructed by capturing a set of concepts and theirlinks according to various criteria such as the abstraction paradigm, the granularity scale, interest of user communities, andthe perception of the ontology developer. Thus, different applications of the same domain end up having severalrepresentations of the same real world phenomenon. Multi-representation ontology is an ontology (or ontologies) thatcharacterizes ontological concept by a variable set of properties (static and dynamic) or attributes in several contexts and/ orin several scales of granularity. This paper introduces the formalism used for defining the paradigm of multi-representationontology and shows the manifestation of this paradigm with Enterprise Information Systems

    Semantic web in manufacturing

Advances in manufacturing systems include attempts to create collaborative networks for enterprise integration and information interoperability. To achieve collaboration and sharing effectively, various networking technologies have been proposed in the literature. The web has emerged as a basic entity for interconnecting man and machine and almost all parts of the enterprise Community are being reshaped to exploit the opportunities that it offers. Apart from web technology, there are various other tools and techniques that have attracted research communities for representing data in ways that both machines and humans can understand. Semantic web, the second-generation web technology, is enriched by machine-processable information to support the users in their tasks. This paper presents the vision of the semantic web and describes ontologies and associated metadata as the building blocks of the semantic web. it reviews the literature dealing with the application of the semantic web and ontology in the broad domain of manufacturing. First, brief details about key enablers, i.e. web services, semantic web, semantic services, and ontology, are presented. Then the implementation of these approaches in different sectors of manufacturing is discussed. A knowledge base for all the information resources concerned with the manufacturing domain is also built up in this paper. An ontology model for a knowledge base of information resources is designed in Protege software, which can be used for storing and searching information about authors, journals, blogs, newspapers, and many other sources of information

Semantic Interoperability Middleware – Enabling collaborative networks in public sector

    Get PDF
Electronic Government initiatives, such as seamless public services delivered at one-stop government portals, require establishing collaborative networks among public- and private-sector organizations. However, semantic interoperability problems emerge as these organizations may differ in the terms and meanings they use to communicate, express their needs and describe resources they make available to each other. This paper describes typical semantic interoperability problems and presents a middleware solution to address them, called Semantic Interoperability Middleware (SIM). The paper illustrates the problems through three case studies in a collaborative network for the delivery of welfare benefits. Subsequently, the requirements for SIM are presented, and the architecture and design of the solution are specified using UML. SIM assumes organizations have agreed on ontologies that reflect the meaning of terms they use in communicating. It comprises three services: Mediation – resolves differences in terms and meaning; Validation – detects inconsistent terms and meaning; and Discovery – mediates and matches need with resource descriptions. Finally, the case studies are resolved applying SIM.Workshop de Ingeniería de Software y Bases de Datos (WISBD)Red de Universidades con Carreras en Informática (RedUNCI
