Semi-automated creation of converged iTV services: From macromedia director simulations to services ready for broadcast
While sound and video may capture viewersā attention, interaction can captivate them. This has not been available prior to the advent of Digital Television. In fact, what lies at the heart of the Digital Television revolution
is this new type of interactive content, offered
in the form of interactive Television (iTV) services. On top of that, the new world of converged networks has created a demand for a new type of converged services on a range of mobile terminals (Tablet PCs, PDAs and mobile phones). This paper aims at presenting a new approach to service creation that allows for the semi-automatic translation of simulations and rapid prototypes created in the accessible desktop
multimedia authoring package Macromedia Director
into services ready for broadcast. This is achieved by a series of tools that de-skill and speed-up the process of creating digital TV user interfaces (UI) and applications for mobile terminals.
The benefits of rapid prototyping are essential for the production of these new types of services, and are therefore discussed in the first section of this paper.
In the following sections, an overview of the
operation of content, service, creation and management sub-systems is presented, which illustrates why these tools compose an important and integral part of a system responsible of creating, delivering and managing converged broadcast and telecommunications services.
The next section examines a number of metadata
languages candidates for describing the iTV services user interface and the schema language adopted in this project. A detailed description of the operation of the two tools is provided to offer an insight of how they can be used to de-skill and speed-up the process of creating digital TV user interfaces and applications for mobile terminals. Finally, representative broadcast oriented and telecommunication oriented converged service components are also introduced, demonstrating how these tools have been used to generate different types of services
On Content-centric Wireless Delivery Networks
The flux of social media and the convenience of mobile connectivity has
created a mobile data phenomenon that is expected to overwhelm the mobile
cellular networks in the foreseeable future. Despite the advent of 4G/LTE, the
growth rate of wireless data has far exceeded the capacity increase of the
mobile networks. A fundamentally new design paradigm is required to tackle the
ever-growing wireless data challenge.
In this article, we investigate the problem of massive content delivery over
wireless networks and present a systematic view on content-centric network
design and its underlying challenges. Towards this end, we first review some of
the recent advancements in Information Centric Networking (ICN) which provides
the basis on how media contents can be labeled, distributed, and placed across
the networks. We then formulate the content delivery task into a content rate
maximization problem over a share wireless channel, which, contrasting the
conventional wisdom that attempts to increase the bit-rate of a unicast system,
maximizes the content delivery capability with a fixed amount of wireless
resources. This conceptually simple change enables us to exploit the "content
diversity" and the "network diversity" by leveraging the abundant computation
sources (through application-layer encoding, pushing and caching, etc.) within
the existing wireless networks. A network architecture that enables wireless
network crowdsourcing for content delivery is then described, followed by an

Mitigating Interference in Content Delivery Networks by Spatial Signal Alignment: The Approach of Shot-Noise Ratio
Multimedia content especially videos is expected to dominate data traffic in
next-generation mobile networks. Caching popular content at the network edge
has emerged to be a solution for low-latency content delivery. Compared with
the traditional wireless communication, content delivery has a key
characteristic that many signals coexisting in the air carry identical popular
content. They, however, can interfere with each other at a receiver if their
modulation-and-coding (MAC) schemes are adapted to individual channels
following the classic approach. To address this issue, we present a novel idea
of content adaptive MAC (CAMAC) where adapting MAC schemes to content ensures
that all signals carry identical content are encoded using an identical MAC
scheme, achieving spatial MAC alignment. Consequently, interference can be
harnessed as signals, to improve the reliability of wireless delivery. In the
remaining part of the paper, we focus on quantifying the gain CAMAC can bring
to a content-delivery network using a stochastic-geometry model. Specifically,
content helpers are distributed as a Poisson point process, each of which
transmits a file from a content database based on a given popularity
distribution. It is discovered that the successful content-delivery probability
is closely related to the distribution of the ratio of two independent shot
noise processes, named a shot-noise ratio. The distribution itself is an open
mathematical problem that we tackle in this work. Using stable-distribution
theory and tools from stochastic geometry, the distribution function is derived
in closed form. Extending the result in the context of content-delivery
networks with CAMAC yields the content-delivery probability in different closed
forms. In addition, the gain in the probability due to CAMAC is shown to grow
