The authors take a look at the existing 3G systems in service and investigate the capabilities of 4G, and while the theoretical throughput of these cellular systems is expected to be high, the future promises to offer more technological improvements and innovations.<br/
Bank incentives and optimal CDOs
The paper examines a delegated monitoring problem between investors and a bank holding a portfolio of correlated loans displaying âcontagion.â Moral hazard prevents the bank from monitoring continuously unless it is compensated with the right incentive-compatible contract. The asset pool is liquidated when losses exceed a state-contingent cut-off rule. The bank bears a relatively high share of the risk initially, as it should have high-powered incentives to monitor, but its long term financial stake tapers off as losses unfold. Liquidity regulation based on securitization can replicate the optimal contract. The sponsor provides an internal credit enhancement out of the proceeds of the sale and extends protection in the form of weighted tranches of collateralized debt obligations. In compensation the trust pays servicing and rent-preserving fees if a long enough period elapses with no losses occurring. Rather than being detrimental, well-designed securitization seems an effective means of implementing the second best.Credit risk transfer, Default Risk, Contagion.
Introduction to the special issue on cross-language algorithms and applications
With the increasingly global nature of our everyday interactions, the need for multilingual technologies to support efficient and efective information access and communication cannot be overemphasized. Computational modeling of language has been the focus of
Natural Language Processing, a subdiscipline of Artificial Intelligence. One of the current challenges for this discipline is to design methodologies and algorithms that are cross-language in order to create multilingual technologies rapidly. The goal of this JAIR special
issue on Cross-Language Algorithms and Applications (CLAA) is to present leading research in this area, with emphasis on developing unifying themes that could lead to the development of the science of multi- and cross-lingualism. In this introduction, we provide the reader with the motivation for this special issue and summarize the contributions of the papers that have been included. The selected papers cover a broad range of cross-lingual technologies including machine translation, domain and language adaptation for sentiment
analysis, cross-language lexical resources, dependency parsing, information retrieval and knowledge representation. We anticipate that this special issue will serve as an invaluable resource for researchers interested in topics of cross-lingual natural language processing.Postprint (published version
Do Android Taint Analysis Tools Keep Their Promises?
In recent years, researchers have developed a number of tools to conduct
taint analysis of Android applications. While all the respective papers aim at
providing a thorough empirical evaluation, comparability is hindered by varying
or unclear evaluation targets. Sometimes, the apps used for evaluation are not
precisely described. In other cases, authors use an established benchmark but
cover it only partially. In yet other cases, the evaluations differ in terms of
the data leaks searched for, or lack a ground truth to compare against. All
those limitations make it impossible to truly compare the tools based on those
published evaluations.
We thus present ReproDroid, a framework allowing the accurate comparison of
Android taint analysis tools. ReproDroid supports researchers in inferring the
ground truth for data leaks in apps, in automatically applying tools to
benchmarks, and in evaluating the obtained results. We use ReproDroid to
comparatively evaluate on equal grounds the six prominent taint analysis tools
Amandroid, DIALDroid, DidFail, DroidSafe, FlowDroid and IccTA. The results are
largely positive although four tools violate some promises concerning features
and accuracy. Finally, we contribute to the area of unbiased benchmarking with
a new and improved version of the open test suite DroidBench
Synchronous communication technologies for language learning: Promise and challenges in research and pedagogy
We propose a definition of synchronous communication based on joint attention, noting that in certain mediated communication settings joint attention is a matter of perception rather than determinable fact. The most salient properties of synchronous computer-mediated communication (SCMC) are real-time pressure to communicate and a greater degree of social presence relative to asynchronous communication. These properties underlie the benefits and challenges of SCMC for language learning, which we discuss under three headings: (1) SCMC as learning tool; (2) SCMC as target competence; and (3) SCMC as setting for learner dialogue, intracultural and intercultural. We survey research themes in SCMC and preview the contributions of the Special Issue. Finally, we identify questions for future research
