    Single-machine scheduling with stepwise tardiness costs and release times

    We study a scheduling problem that belongs to the yard operations component of the railroad planning problems, namely the hump sequencing problem. The scheduling problem is characterized as a single-machine problem with stepwise tardiness cost objectives. This is a new scheduling criterion which is also relevant in the context of traditional machine scheduling problems. We produce complexity results that characterize some cases of the problem as pseudo-polynomially solvable. For the difficult-to-solve cases of the problem, we develop mathematical programming formulations, and propose heuristic algorithms. We test the formulations and heuristic algorithms on randomly generated single-machine scheduling problems and real-life datasets for the hump sequencing problem. Our experiments show promising results for both sets of problems

    Pilot, Rollout and Monte Carlo Tree Search Methods for Job Shop Scheduling

    Greedy heuristics may be attuned by looking ahead for each possible choice, in an approach called the rollout or Pilot method. These methods may be seen as meta-heuristics that can enhance (any) heuristic solution, by repetitively modifying a master solution: similarly to what is done in game tree search, better choices are identified using lookahead, based on solutions obtained by repeatedly using a greedy heuristic. This paper first illustrates how the Pilot method improves upon some simple well known dispatch heuristics for the job-shop scheduling problem. The Pilot method is then shown to be a special case of the more recent Monte Carlo Tree Search (MCTS) methods: Unlike the Pilot method, MCTS methods use random completion of partial solutions to identify promising branches of the tree. The Pilot method and a simple version of MCTS, using the ε\varepsilon-greedy exploration paradigms, are then compared within the same framework, consisting of 300 scheduling problems of varying sizes with fixed-budget of rollouts.     An application of a cocitation-analysis method to find further research possibilities on the area of scheduling problems

    In this article we will give firstly a classification scheme of scheduling problems and their solving methods. The main aspects under examination are the following: machine and secondary resources, constraints, objective functions, uncertainty, mathematical models and adapted solution methods. In a second part, based on this scheme, we will examine a corpus of 60 main articles (1015 citation links were recorded in total) in scheduling literature from 1977 to 2009. The main purpose is to discover the underlying themes within the literature and to examine how they have evolved. To identify documents likely to be closely related, we are going to use the cocitation-based method of Greene et al. (2008). Our aim is to build a base of articles in order to extract the much developed research themes and find the less examined ones as well, and then try to discuss the reasons of the poorly investigation of some areas

    Planning and Scheduling Transportation Vehicle Fleet in a Congested Traffic Environment

    Transportation is a main component of supply chain competitiveness since it plays a major role in the inbound, inter-facility, and outbound logistics. In this context, assigning and scheduling vehicle routing is a crucial management problem. Despite numerous publications dealing with efficient scheduling methods for vehicle routing, very few addressed the inherent stochastic nature of travel times in this problem. In this paper, a vehicle routing problem with time windows and stochastic travel times due to potential traffic congestion is considered. The approach developed introduces mainly the traffic congestion component based on queueing theory. This is an innovative modeling scheme to capture the stochastic behavior of travel times. A case study is used both to illustrate the appropriateness of the approach as well as to show that time-independent solutions are often unrealistic within a congested traffic environment which is often the case on the european road networkstransportation; vehicle fleet; planning; scheduling; congested traffic
