Harnessing the Interaction continuum for subtle assisted living
This article belongs to the Special Issue Select papers from UCAmI 2011 - the 5th International Symposium on Ubiquitous Computing and Ambient Intelligence (UCAmI'11)People interact with each other in many levels of attention, intention and
meaning. This Interaction Continuum is used daily to deal with different contexts,
adapting the interaction to communication needs and available resources. Nevertheless,
computer-supported interaction has mainly focused on the most direct, explicit and intrusive
types of human to human Interaction such as phone calls, emails, or video conferences.
This paper presents the results of exploring and exploiting the potentials of undemanding
interaction mechanisms, paying special attention to subtle communication and background
interaction. As we argue the benefits of this type of interaction for people with special needs,
we present a theoretical framework to define it and propose a proof of concept based on
Augmented Objects and a color codification mechanism. Finally, we evaluate and analyze

On the Design of Ambient Intelligent Systems in the Context of Assistive Technologies
The design of Ambient Intelligent Systems (AISs) is discussed in the
context of assistive technologies. The main issues include ubiquitous communications,
context awareness, natural interactions and heterogeneity, which are
analyzed using some examples. A layered architecture is proposed for heterogeneous
sub-systems integration with three levels of interactions that may be

This special issue “Artificial Intelligence and Social Application” includes extended versions of selected papers from Artificial Intelligence and Education area of the 13th edition of the Ibero-American Conference on Artificial Intelligence, held in Cartagena de Indias - Colombia, November, 2012. The issue includes, thus, five selected papers, describing innovative research work, on Artificial Intelligence in Education area including, among others: Recommender Systems, Learning Objects, Intelligent Tutoring Systems, Multi-Agent Systems, Virtual Learning Environments, Case-based reasoning and Classifiers Algorithms. This issue also includes six papers in the Interactive Multimedia and Artificial Intelligence areas, dealing with subjects such as User Experience, E-Learning, Communication Tools, Multi-Agent Systems, Grid Computing.
IBERAMIA 2012 was the 13th edition of the Ibero-American Conference on Artificial Intelligence, a leading symposium where the Ibero-American AI community comes together to share research results and experiences with researchers in Artificial Intelligence from all over the world. AmbieSense: a system and reference architecture for personalised and context-sensitive information services for mobile users
The purpose of AmbieSense is to provide personalised, context-sensitive information to the mobile user. It is about augmenting digital information to physical objects, rooms, and areas. The aim is to provide relevant information to the right user and situation. Digital content is distributed from the surroundings and onto your mobile phone. An ambient information environment is provided by a combination of context tag technology, a software platform to manage and deliver the information, and personal computing devices to which the information is served. This paper describes how the AmbieSense reference architecture has been defined and used in order to deliver information to the mobile citizen at the right time, place and situation. Epigenetic Information-Body Interaction and Information-Assisted Evolution from the Perspective of the Informational Model of Consciousness
Introduction: the objective of this investigation is to analyses the advances of understanding in the epigenetic processes and to extract
conclusions concerning the information-based evolution from the perspective of the Informational Model of Consciousness (IMC).
Analysis of epigenetic mechanisms: it is shown that the study of the epigenetic mechanisms are of increasing interest not only to discover the
responsible mechanisms of some diseases, but also to observe the acquisition and transmission mechanisms of some traits to the next generation/
transgenerations, without affecting the DNA sequences. These advances were especially supported by the spectacular progresses in the high
technological tools like digital microfluidic techniques and semiconductor-based detection systems, allowing to apply sequencing methods of DNA
and to observe its structural modifications. The specific typical steps of the epigenetic mechanisms are analysed, showing that these mechanisms
could be fully described in terms of information, as signal transmission agents embodying or disembodying information in three different stages and
under specific conditions, including especially the signal persistence as a main conditional epigenetic factor.
Results concerning the information-assisted evolution from the perspective of IMC: the epigenetic mechanisms are discussed as a function of
each component of the informational system of the organism, consisting in memory, decisional operability, emotional reactivity, metabolic driving
processes, genetic transmission, genetic info-generator and the info-connection explaining the special extra-power properties of the mind. It is
shown that the epigenetic mechanisms could be related to the specific functions of each informational component, mainly exhibiting five levels of
integration of information as matter-related information, culminating with the stable integration in the procreation cells and transmission to the
next generation. The results were extended to explain the transgenerational adaptive processes of isolated population groups.

Social Intelligence Design in Ambient Intelligence
This Special Issue of AI and Society contains a selection of papers presented at the 6th Social Intelligence Design Workshop held at ITC-irst, Povo (Trento, Italy) in July 2007. Being the 6th in a series means that there now is a well-established and also a growing research area. The interest in this research area is growing because, among other things, current computing technology allows other than the traditional efficiency-oriented applications associated with computer science and interface technology.
