    Human abnormal behavior impact on speaker verification systems

    Human behavior plays a major role in improving human-machine communication. The performance must be affected by abnormal behavior as systems are trained using normal utterances. The abnormal behavior is often associated with a change in the human emotional state. Different emotional states cause physiological changes in the human body that affect the vocal tract. Fear, anger, or even happiness we recognize as a deviation from a normal behavior. The whole spectrum of human-machine application is susceptible to behavioral changes. Abnormal behavior is a major factor, especially for security applications such as verification systems. Face, fingerprint, iris, or speaker verification is a group of the most common approaches to biometric authentication today. This paper discusses human normal and abnormal behavior and its impact on the accuracy and effectiveness of automatic speaker verification (ASV). The support vector machines classifier inputs are Mel-frequency cepstral coefficients and their dynamic changes. For this purpose, the Berlin Database of Emotional Speech was used. Research has shown that abnormal behavior has a major impact on the accuracy of verification, where the equal error rate increase to 37 %. This paper also describes a new design and application of the ASV system that is much more immune to the rejection of a target user with abnormal behavior.Web of Science6401274012

    Speaker Recognition using Supra-segmental Level Excitation Information

    Speaker specific information present in the excitation signal is mostly viewed from sub-segmental, segmental and supra-segmental levels. In this work, the supra-segmental level information is explored for recognizing speakers. Earlier study has shown that, combined use of pitch and epoch strength vectors provides useful supra-segmental information. However, the speaker recognition accuracy achieved by supra-segmental level feature is relatively poor than other levels source information. May be the modulation information present at the supra-segmental level of the excitation signal is not manifested properly in pith and epoch strength vectors. We propose a method to model the supra-segmental level modulation information from residual mel frequency cepstral coefficient (R-MFCC) trajectories. The evidences from R-MFCC trajectories combined with pitch and epoch strength vectors are proposed to represent supra-segmental information. Experimental results show that compared to pitch and epoch strength vectors, the proposed approach provides relatively improved performance.     A survey on the feasibility of sound classification on wireless sensor nodes

    Wireless sensor networks are suitable to gain context awareness for indoor environments. As sound waves form a rich source of context information, equipping the nodes with microphones can be of great benefit. The algorithms to extract features from sound waves are often highly computationally intensive. This can be problematic as wireless nodes are usually restricted in resources. In order to be able to make a proper decision about which features to use, we survey how sound is used in the literature for global sound classification, age and gender classification, emotion recognition, person verification and identification and indoor and outdoor environmental sound classification. The results of the surveyed algorithms are compared with respect to accuracy and computational load. The accuracies are taken from the surveyed papers; the computational loads are determined by benchmarking the algorithms on an actual sensor node. We conclude that for indoor context awareness, the low-cost algorithms for feature extraction perform equally well as the more computationally-intensive variants. As the feature extraction still requires a large amount of processing time, we present four possible strategies to deal with this problem
