Single image defocus estimation by modified gaussian function
© 2019 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd. This article presents an algorithm to estimate the defocus blur from a single image. Most of the existing methods estimate the defocus blur at edge locations, which further involves the reblurring process. For this purpose, existing methods use the traditional Gaussian function in the phase of reblurring but it is found that the traditional Gaussian kernel is sensitive to the edges and can cause loss of edges information. Hence, there are more chances of missing spatially varying blur at edge locations. We offer the repeated averaging filters as an alternative to the traditional Gaussian function, which is more effective, and estimate the spatially varying defocus blur at edge locations. By using repeated averaging filters, a blur sparse map is computed. The obtained sparse map is propagated by integration of superpixels segmentation and transductive inference to estimate full defocus blur map. Our adopted method of repeated averaging filters has less computational time of defocus blur map estimation and has better visual estimates of the final defocus recovered map. Moreover, it has surpassed many previous state-of-the-art proposed systems in terms of quantative analysis
Image enhancement methods and applications in computational photography
Computational photography is currently a rapidly developing and cutting-edge topic in applied optics, image sensors and image processing fields to go beyond the limitations of traditional photography. The innovations of computational photography allow the photographer not only merely to take an image, but also, more importantly, to perform computations on the captured image data. Good examples of these innovations include high dynamic range imaging, focus stacking, super-resolution, motion deblurring and so on. Although extensive work has been done to explore image enhancement techniques in each subfield of computational photography, attention has seldom been given to study of the image enhancement technique of simultaneously extending depth of field and dynamic range of a scene. In my dissertation, I present an algorithm which combines focus stacking and high dynamic range (HDR) imaging in order to produce an image with both extended depth of field (DOF) and dynamic range than any of the input images. In this dissertation, I also investigate super-resolution image restoration from multiple images, which are possibly degraded by large motion blur. The proposed algorithm combines the super-resolution problem and blind image deblurring problem in a unified framework. The blur kernel for each input image is separately estimated. I also do not make any restrictions on the motion fields among images; that is, I estimate dense motion field without simplifications such as parametric motion. While the proposed super-resolution method uses multiple images to enhance spatial resolution from multiple regular images, single image super-resolution is related to techniques of denoising or removing blur from one single captured image. In my dissertation, space-varying point spread function (PSF) estimation and image deblurring for single image is also investigated. Regarding the PSF estimation, I do not make any restrictions on the type of blur or how the blur varies spatially. Once the space-varying PSF is estimated, space-varying image deblurring is performed, which produces good results even for regions where it is not clear what the correct PSF is at first. I also bring image enhancement applications to both personal computer (PC) and Android platform as computational photography applications
Learning a Convolutional Neural Network for Non-uniform Motion Blur Removal
In this paper, we address the problem of estimating and removing non-uniform
motion blur from a single blurry image. We propose a deep learning approach to
predicting the probabilistic distribution of motion blur at the patch level
using a convolutional neural network (CNN). We further extend the candidate set
of motion kernels predicted by the CNN using carefully designed image
rotations. A Markov random field model is then used to infer a dense
non-uniform motion blur field enforcing motion smoothness. Finally, motion blur
is removed by a non-uniform deblurring model using patch-level image prior.
Experimental evaluations show that our approach can effectively estimate and
remove complex non-uniform motion blur that is not handled well by previous

Focusing on out-of-focus : assessing defocus estimation algorithms for the benefit of automated image masking
Acquiring photographs as input for an image-based modelling pipeline is less trivial than often assumed. Photographs should be correctly exposed, cover the subject sufficiently from all possible angles, have the required spatial resolution, be devoid of any motion blur, exhibit accurate focus and feature an adequate depth of field. The last four characteristics all determine the " sharpness " of an image and the photogrammetric, computer vision and hybrid photogrammetric computer vision communities all assume that the object to be modelled is depicted " acceptably " sharp throughout the whole image collection. Although none of these three fields has ever properly quantified " acceptably sharp " , it is more or less standard practice to mask those image portions that appear to be unsharp due to the limited depth of field around the plane of focus (whether this means blurry object parts or completely out-of-focus backgrounds). This paper will assess how well-or ill-suited defocus estimating algorithms are for automatically masking a series of photographs, since this could speed up modelling pipelines with many hundreds or thousands of photographs. To that end, the paper uses five different real-world datasets and compares the output of three state-of-the-art edge-based defocus estimators. Joint Blind Motion Deblurring and Depth Estimation of Light Field
Removing camera motion blur from a single light field is a challenging task
since it is highly ill-posed inverse problem. The problem becomes even worse
when blur kernel varies spatially due to scene depth variation and high-order
camera motion. In this paper, we propose a novel algorithm to estimate all blur
model variables jointly, including latent sub-aperture image, camera motion,
and scene depth from the blurred 4D light field. Exploiting multi-view nature
of a light field relieves the inverse property of the optimization by utilizing
strong depth cues and multi-view blur observation. The proposed joint
estimation achieves high quality light field deblurring and depth estimation
simultaneously under arbitrary 6-DOF camera motion and unconstrained scene
depth. Intensive experiment on real and synthetic blurred light field confirms
that the proposed algorithm outperforms the state-of-the-art light field
deblurring and depth estimation methods
Generalized Video Deblurring for Dynamic Scenes
Several state-of-the-art video deblurring methods are based on a strong
assumption that the captured scenes are static. These methods fail to deblur
blurry videos in dynamic scenes. We propose a video deblurring method to deal
with general blurs inherent in dynamic scenes, contrary to other methods. To
handle locally varying and general blurs caused by various sources, such as
camera shake, moving objects, and depth variation in a scene, we approximate
pixel-wise kernel with bidirectional optical flows. Therefore, we propose a
single energy model that simultaneously estimates optical flows and latent
frames to solve our deblurring problem. We also provide a framework and
efficient solvers to optimize the energy model. By minimizing the proposed
energy function, we achieve significant improvements in removing blurs and
estimating accurate optical flows in blurry frames. Extensive experimental
results demonstrate the superiority of the proposed method in real and
challenging videos that state-of-the-art methods fail in either deblurring or
