Efficient Large-scale Distance-Based Join Queries in SpatialHadoop
Efficient processing of Distance-Based Join Queries (DBJQs) in spatial databases is of paramount importance in many application domains. The most representative and known DBJQs are the K Closest Pairs Query (KCPQ) and the ε Distance Join Query (εDJQ). These types of join queries are characterized by a number of desired pairs (K) or a distance threshold (ε) between the components of the pairs in the final result, over two spatial datasets. Both are expensive operations, since two spatial datasets are combined with additional constraints. Given the increasing volume of spatial data originating from multiple sources and stored in distributed servers, it is not always efficient to perform DBJQs on a centralized server. For this reason, this paper addresses the problem of computing DBJQs on big spatial datasets in SpatialHadoop, an extension of Hadoop that supports efficient processing of spatial queries in a cloud-based setting. We propose novel algorithms, based on plane-sweep, to perform efficient parallel DBJQs on large-scale spatial datasets in Spatial Hadoop. We evaluate the performance of the proposed algorithms in several situations with large real-world as well as synthetic datasets. The experiments demonstrate the efficiency and scalability of our proposed methodologies
RkNN Query Processing in Distributed Spatial Infrastructures: A Performance Study
The Reverse k-Nearest Neighbor (RkNN) problem, i.e. finding all objects in a dataset that have a given query point among their corresponding k-nearest neighbors, has received increasing attention in the past years. RkNN queries are of particular interest in a wide range of applications such as decision support systems, resource allocation, profile-based marketing, location-based services, etc. With the current increasing volume of spatial data, it is difficult to perform RkNN queries efficiently in spatial data-intensive applications, because of the limited computational capability and storage resources. In this paper, we investigate how to design and implement distributed RkNN query algorithms using shared-nothing spatial cloud infrastructures as SpatialHadoop and LocationSpark. SpatialHadoop is a framework that inherently supports spatial indexing on top of Hadoop to perform efficiently spatial queries. LocationSpark is a recent spatial data processing system built on top of Spark. We have evaluated the performance of the distributed RkNN query algorithms on both SpatialHadoop and LocationSpark with big real-world datasets. The experiments have demonstrated the efficiency and scalability of our proposal in both distributed spatial data management systems, showing the performance advantages of LocationSpark
NOSQL For Storage and Retrieval of Large LiDAR Data Collections
Developments in LiDAR technology over the past decades have made LiDAR to become a mature and widely accepted source of geospatial information. This in turn has led to an enormous growth in data volume. The central idea for a file-centric storage of LiDAR point clouds is the observation that large collections of LiDAR data are typically delivered as large collections of files, rather than single files of terabyte size. This split of the dataset, commonly referred to as tiling, was usually done to accommodate a specific processing pipeline. It makes therefore sense to preserve this split. A document oriented NoSQL database can easily emulate this data partitioning, by representing each tile (file) in a separate document. The document stores the metadata of the tile. The actual files are stored in a distributed file system emulated by the NoSQL database. We demonstrate the use of MongoDB a highly scalable document oriented NoSQL database for storing large LiDAR files. MongoDB like any NoSQL database allows for queries on the attributes of the document. As a specialty MongoDB also allows spatial queries. Hence we can perform spatial queries on the bounding boxes of the LiDAR tiles. EAGLE—A Scalable Query Processing Engine for Linked Sensor Data
Recently, many approaches have been proposed to manage sensor data using semantic web technologies for effective heterogeneous data integration. However, our empirical observations revealed that these solutions primarily focused on semantic relationships and unfortunately paid less attention to spatio–temporal correlations. Most semantic approaches do not have spatio–temporal support. Some of them have attempted to provide full spatio–temporal support, but have poor performance for complex spatio–temporal aggregate queries. In addition, while the volume of sensor data is rapidly growing, the challenge of querying and managing the massive volumes of data generated by sensing devices still remains unsolved. In this article, we introduce EAGLE, a spatio–temporal query engine for querying sensor data based on the linked data model. The ultimate goal of EAGLE is to provide an elastic and scalable system which allows fast searching and analysis with respect to the relationships of space, time and semantics in sensor data. Astronomy in the Cloud: Using MapReduce for Image Coaddition
In the coming decade, astronomical surveys of the sky will generate tens of
terabytes of images and detect hundreds of millions of sources every night. The
study of these sources will involve computation challenges such as anomaly
detection and classification, and moving object tracking. Since such studies
benefit from the highest quality data, methods such as image coaddition
(stacking) will be a critical preprocessing step prior to scientific
investigation. With a requirement that these images be analyzed on a nightly
basis to identify moving sources or transient objects, these data streams
present many computational challenges. Given the quantity of data involved, the
computational load of these problems can only be addressed by distributing the
workload over a large number of nodes. However, the high data throughput
demanded by these applications may present scalability challenges for certain
storage architectures. One scalable data-processing method that has emerged in
recent years is MapReduce, and in this paper we focus on its popular
open-source implementation called Hadoop. In the Hadoop framework, the data is
partitioned among storage attached directly to worker nodes, and the processing
workload is scheduled in parallel on the nodes that contain the required input
data. A further motivation for using Hadoop is that it allows us to exploit
cloud computing resources, e.g., Amazon's EC2. We report on our experience
implementing a scalable image-processing pipeline for the SDSS imaging database
using Hadoop. This multi-terabyte imaging dataset provides a good testbed for
algorithm development since its scope and structure approximate future surveys.
First, we describe MapReduce and how we adapted image coaddition to the
MapReduce framework. Then we describe a number of optimizations to our basic
