    DATA SHARING FOR TASK EFFICIENCY DURING A FOREIGN HUMANITARIAN ASSISTANCE/DISASTER RELIEF EFFORT

    This paper adapts Zigurs & Bucklandā€™s (1998) Task Technology Fit theoretical framework for application to a virtual organization that exists for episodically during foreign humanitarian assistance/disaster relief efforts. Using the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami, the 2010 Haiti earthquake, and more than 1000 lessons learned cases from the federal government, I examine how task activities, process support level, military command level and partner types influence the technology platform that is used for structured and unstructured data sharing in real time. The predicted fit between task and technology is supported; however, addition of consideration of the virtual nature of the internal and external partnerships that are required for foreign disaster relief efforts improves the explanatory model. Recommendations for theory changes and the practical implications of this research for future foreign disaster relief efforts are explored

    From Ship to Shuttle: NASA Orbiter Naming Program, September 1988 - May 1989

    By congressional action in 1987, the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) was authorized to provide an opportunity for American school students to name the new Space Shuttle orbiter being built to replace the Challenger. The Council of Chief State School Officers (CCSSO), an education organization representing the chief education officials of the nation, was asked by NASA to assist in the development and administration of this exciting and important educational activity. A selection of interdisciplinary activities related to the Space Shuttle that were designed by students for the NASA Orbiter-Naming Program are presented. The national winner's project is first followed by other projects listed in alphabetical order by state, and a bibliography compiled from suggestions by the state-level winning teams

    Menu-Based User Interface Systems: Theory and Practice

    The thesis discusses the menu selection technique, which is one of the most commonly used interaction techniques in Human-Computer Interfaces, and continues to flourish because of its simple interaction format and its adaptability to the many diverse applications. The ease of use of the technique, particularly by novices, contributes significantly to the widespread acceptance of menu-based user interface systems, despite their inherent disadvantages and drawbacks. Chapter One surveys the issues concerning the design and use of menu-based interfaces, and addresses particularly the navigational problems encountered by users of menu selection systems, identifying various navigational aids which help overcome these problems. The chapter concludes with a comparison between menu-based interfaces and other interface styles (command language, natural language and form-filling). Chapter Two describes the practical work of the thesis which consists of implementing a particularly demanding menu-based interface example involving multiple menu selections using four different dialogue specification systems. The implementation is discussed mainly from a menu system designer's view. Strategies to solve or address the multiple selection mechanism problem as well as some the navigational concepts discussed in chapter one are devised and used within each the four target systems. Also, some other related user interface design issues are reported in chapter two. The principal aim of the work is to investigate the difficulties a dialogue designer may face in attempting to implement a common type of menu-based interface using various delivery systems, all of which claim in varying degrees to support menu-based interactive styles. In the final chapter conclusions are drawn from the practical work concerning desirable menu support features in user interface implementation systems, and issues requiring further investigation are identified

    Spatial Hypermedia as a programming environment

    This thesis investigates the possibilities opened to a programmer when their programming environment not only utilises Spatial Hypermedia functionality, but embraces it as a core component. Designed and built to explore these possibilities, SpIDER (standing for Spatial Integrated Development Environment Research) is an IDE featuring not only traditional functionality such as content assist and debugging support but also multimedia integration and free-form spatial code layout. Such functionality allows programmers to visually communicate aspects of the intent and structure of their code that would be tediousā€”and in some cases impossibleā€”to achieve in conventional IDEs. Drawing from literature on Spatial Memory, the design of SpIDER has been driven by the desire to improve the programming experience while also providing a flexible authoring environment for software development. The programmerā€™s use of Spatial Memory is promoted, in particular, by: utilising fixed sized authoring canvases; providing the capacity for landmarks; exploiting a hierarchical linking system; and having well defined occlusion and spatial stability of authored code. The key challenge in implementing SpIDER was to devise an algorithm to bridge the gap between spatially expressed source code, and the serial text forms required by compilers. This challenge was met by developing an algorithm that we have called the flow walker. We validated this algorithm through user testing to establish that participantsā€™ interpretation of the meaning of spatially laid out code matched the flow walkerā€™s implementation.
