This thesis aims towards performance enhancement for unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) assisted internet of things network (IoT). In this realm, novel reinforcement learning (RL) frameworks have been proposed for solving intricate joint optimisation scenarios. These scenarios include, uplink, downlink and combined. The multi-access technique utilised is non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA), as key enabler in this regime. The outcomes of this research entail, enhancement in key performance metrics, such as sum-rate, energy efficiency and consequent reduction in outage. For the scenarios involving uplink transmissions by IoT devices, adaptive and tandem rein forcement learning frameworks have been developed. The aim is to maximise capacity over fixed UAV trajectory. The adaptive framework is utilised in a scenario wherein channel suitability is ascertained for uplink transmissions utilising a fixed clustering regime in NOMA. Tandem framework is utilised in a scenario wherein multiple-channel resource suitability is ascertained along with, power allocation, dynamic clustering and IoT node associations to NOMA clusters and channels. In scenarios involving downlink transmission to IoT devices, an ensemble RL (ERL) frame work is proposed for sum-rate enhancement over fixed UAV trajectory. For dynamic UAV trajec tory, hybrid decision framework (HDF) is proposed for energy efficiency optimisation. Downlink transmission power and bandwidth is managed for NOMA transmissions over fixed and dynamic UAV trajectories, facilitating IoT networks. In UAV enabled relaying scenario, for control system plants and their respective remotely deployed sensors, a head start reinforcement learning framework based on deep learning is de veloped and implemented. NOMA is invoked, in both uplink and downlink transmissions for IoT network. Dynamic NOMA clustering, power management and nodes association along with UAV height control is jointly managed. The primary aim is the, enhancement of net sum-rate and its subsequent manifestation in facilitating the IoT assisted use case. The simulation results relating to aforesaid scenarios indicate, enhanced sum-rate, energy efficiency and reduced outage for UAV-assisted IoT networks. The proposed RL frameworks surpass in performance in comparison to existing frameworks as benchmarks for the same sce narios. The simulation platforms utilised are MATLAB and Python, for network modeling, RL framework design and validation

Single cloud management platform technology has reached maturity and is quite successful in information technology applications. Enterprises and application service providers are increasingly adopting a multi-cloud strategy to reduce the risk of cloud service provider lock-in and cloud blackouts and, at the same time, get the benefits like competitive pricing, the flexibility of resource provisioning and better points of presence. Another class of applications that are getting cloud service providers increasingly interested in is the carriers\u27 virtualized network services. However, virtualized carrier services require high levels of availability and performance and impose stringent requirements on cloud services. They necessitate the use of multi-cloud management and innovative techniques for placement and performance management. We consider two classes of distributed applications – the virtual network services and the next generation of healthcare – that would benefit immensely from deployment over multiple clouds. This thesis deals with the design and development of new processes and algorithms to enable these classes of applications. We have evolved a method for optimization of multi-cloud platforms that will pave the way for obtaining optimized placement for both classes of services. The approach that we have followed for placement itself is predictive cost optimized latency controlled virtual resource placement for both types of applications. To improve the availability of virtual network services, we have made innovative use of the machine and deep learning for developing a framework for fault detection and localization. Finally, to secure patient data flowing through the wide expanse of sensors, cloud hierarchy, virtualized network, and visualization domain, we have evolved hierarchical autoencoder models for data in motion between the IoT domain and the multi-cloud domain and within the multi-cloud hierarchy

The idea of balancing the resources spent in the acquisition and encoding of natural signals strictly to their intrinsic information content has interested nearly a decade of research under the name of compressed sensing. In this doctoral dissertation we develop some extensions and improvements upon this technique's foundations, by modifying the random sensing matrices on which the signals of interest are projected to achieve different objectives. Firstly, we propose two methods for the adaptation of sensing matrix ensembles to the second-order moments of natural signals. These techniques leverage the maximisation of different proxies for the quantity of information acquired by compressed sensing, and are efficiently applied in the encoding of electrocardiographic tracks with minimum-complexity digital hardware. Secondly, we focus on the possibility of using compressed sensing as a method to provide a partial, yet cryptanalysis-resistant form of encryption; in this context, we show how a random matrix generation strategy with a controlled amount of perturbations can be used to distinguish between multiple user classes with different quality of access to the encrypted information content. Finally, we explore the application of compressed sensing in the design of a multispectral imager, by implementing an optical scheme that entails a coded aperture array and Fabry-Pérot spectral filters. The signal recoveries obtained by processing real-world measurements show promising results, that leave room for an improvement of the sensing matrix calibration problem in the devised imager

In this community review report, we discuss applications and techniques for fast machine learning (ML) in science - the concept of integrating powerful ML methods into the real-time experimental data processing loop to accelerate scientific discovery. The material for the report builds on two workshops held by the Fast ML for Science community and covers three main areas: applications for fast ML across a number of scientific domains; techniques for training and implementing performant and resource-efficient ML algorithms; and computing architectures, platforms, and technologies for deploying these algorithms. We also present overlapping challenges across the multiple scientific domains where common solutions can be found. This community report is intended to give plenty of examples and inspiration for scientific discovery through integrated and accelerated ML solutions. This is followed by a high-level overview and organization of technical advances, including an abundance of pointers to source material, which can enable these breakthroughs

Sparsity-cognizant multiple-access schemes for large wireless networks with node buffers

    No full text
This paper proposes efficient multiple-access schemes for large wireless networks based on the transmitters' buffer state information and their transceivers' duplex transmission capability. First, we investigate the case of half-duplex nodes where a node can either transmit or receive in a given time instant. In this case, for a given frame, the transmitters send their buffer states to the destination which assigns the available time duration in the frame for data transmission among the transmitters based on their buffer state information. The network is said to be naturally sparse if the number of nonempty-queue transmitters in a given frame is much smaller than the number of users, which is the case when the arrival rates to the queues are very small and the number of users is large. If the network is not naturally sparse, we design the user requests to be sparse such that only few requests are sent to the destination. We refer to the detected nonempty-queue transmitters in a given frame as frame owners. Our design goal is to minimize the nodes' total transmit power in a given frame. In the case of unslotted-time data transmission, the optimization problem is shown to be a convex optimization program. We propose an approximate formulation to simplify the problem and obtain a closed-form expression for the assigned time durations to the nodes. The solution of the approximate optimization problem demonstrates that the time duration assigned to a node in the set of frame owners is the ratio of the square-root of the buffer occupancy of that node to the sum of the square-roots of each occupancy of all the frame owners. We then investigate the slotted-time data transmission scenario, where the time durations assigned for data transmission are slotted. In addition, we show that the full-duplex capability of a node increases the data transmission portion of the frame and enables a distributed implementation of the proposed schemes. Our numerical results demonstrate that the proposed schemes achieve higher average bits per unit power than the fixed-assignment scheme where each node is assigned a predetermined fraction of the frame duration. 2015 IEEE.Scopu
