Multiresolution analysis using wavelet, ridgelet, and curvelet transforms for medical image segmentation
Copyright @ 2011 Shadi AlZubi et al. This article has been made available through the Brunel Open Access Publishing Fund. The experimental study presented in this paper is aimed at the development of an automatic image segmentation system for classifying region of interest (ROI) in medical images which are obtained from different medical scanners such as PET, CT, or MRI. Multiresolution analysis (MRA) using wavelet, ridgelet, and curvelet transforms has been used in the proposed segmentation system. It is particularly a challenging task to classify cancers in human organs in scanners output using shape or gray-level information; organs shape changes throw different slices in medical stack and the gray-level intensity overlap in soft tissues. Curvelet transform is a new extension of wavelet and ridgelet transforms which aims to deal with interesting phenomena occurring along curves. Curvelet transforms has been tested on medical data sets, and results are compared with those obtained from the other transforms. Tests indicate that using curvelet significantly improves the classification of abnormal tissues in the scans and reduce the surrounding noise
A Hierarchical Bayesian Model for Frame Representation
In many signal processing problems, it may be fruitful to represent the
signal under study in a frame. If a probabilistic approach is adopted, it
becomes then necessary to estimate the hyper-parameters characterizing the
probability distribution of the frame coefficients. This problem is difficult
since in general the frame synthesis operator is not bijective. Consequently,
the frame coefficients are not directly observable. This paper introduces a
hierarchical Bayesian model for frame representation. The posterior
distribution of the frame coefficients and model hyper-parameters is derived.
Hybrid Markov Chain Monte Carlo algorithms are subsequently proposed to sample
from this posterior distribution. The generated samples are then exploited to
estimate the hyper-parameters and the frame coefficients of the target signal.
Validation experiments show that the proposed algorithms provide an accurate
estimation of the frame coefficients and hyper-parameters. Application to
practical problems of image denoising show the impact of the resulting Bayesian
estimation on the recovered signal quality
Stable image reconstruction using total variation minimization
This article presents near-optimal guarantees for accurate and robust image
recovery from under-sampled noisy measurements using total variation
minimization. In particular, we show that from O(slog(N)) nonadaptive linear
measurements, an image can be reconstructed to within the best s-term
approximation of its gradient up to a logarithmic factor, and this factor can
be removed by taking slightly more measurements. Along the way, we prove a
strengthened Sobolev inequality for functions lying in the null space of
suitably incoherent matrices.Comment: 25 page
