    Enhanced Direction of Arrival Estimation through Electromagnetic Modeling

    Engineering is a high art that balances modeling the physical world and designing meaningful solutions based on those models. Array signal processing is no exception, and many innovative and creative solutions have come from the field of array processing. However, many of the innovative algorithms that permeate the field are based on a very simple signal model of an array. This simple, although powerful, model is at times a pale reflection of the complexities inherent in the physical world, and this model mismatch opens the door to the performance degradation of any solution for which the model underpins. This dissertation seeks to explore the impact of model mismatch upon common array processing algorithms. To that end, this dissertation brings together the disparate topics of electromagnetics and signal processing. Electromagnetics brings a singular focus on the physical interactions of electromagnetic waves and physical array structures, while signal processing brings modern computational power to solve difficult problems. We delve into model mismatch in two ways; first, by developing a blind array calibration routine that estimates model mismatch and incorporates that knowledge into the reiterative superresoluiton (RISR) direction of arrival estimation algorithm; second, by examining model mismatch between a transmitting and receiving array, and assessing the impact of this mismatch on prolific direction of arrival estimation algorithms. In both of these studies we show that engineers have traded algorithm performance for model simplicity, and that if we are willing to deal with the added complexity we can recapture that lost performance

    Spatial dissection of a soundfield using spherical harmonic decomposition

    A real-world soundfield is often contributed by multiple desired and undesired sound sources. The performance of many acoustic systems such as automatic speech recognition, audio surveillance, and teleconference relies on its ability to extract the desired sound components in such a mixed environment. The existing solutions to the above problem are constrained by various fundamental limitations and require to enforce different priors depending on the acoustic condition such as reverberation and spatial distribution of sound sources. With the growing emphasis and integration of audio applications in diverse technologies such as smart home and virtual reality appliances, it is imperative to advance the source separation technology in order to overcome the limitations of the traditional approaches. To that end, we exploit the harmonic decomposition model to dissect a mixed soundfield into its underlying desired and undesired components based on source and signal characteristics. By analysing the spatial projection of a soundfield, we achieve multiple outcomes such as (i) soundfield separation with respect to distinct source regions, (ii) source separation in a mixed soundfield using modal coherence model, and (iii) direction of arrival (DOA) estimation of multiple overlapping sound sources through pattern recognition of the modal coherence of a soundfield. We first employ an array of higher order microphones for soundfield separation in order to reduce hardware requirement and implementation complexity. Subsequently, we develop novel mathematical models for modal coherence of noisy and reverberant soundfields that facilitate convenient ways for estimating DOA and power spectral densities leading to robust source separation algorithms. The modal domain approach to the soundfield/source separation allows us to circumvent several practical limitations of the existing techniques and enhance the performance and robustness of the system. The proposed methods are presented with several practical applications and performance evaluations using simulated and real-life dataset

    Algorithms for propagation-aware underwater ranging and localization

    Mención Internacional en el título de doctorWhile oceans occupy most of our planet, their exploration and conservation are one of the crucial research problems of modern time. Underwater localization stands among the key issues on the way to the proper inspection and monitoring of this significant part of our world. In this thesis, we investigate and tackle different challenges related to underwater ranging and localization. In particular, we focus on algorithms that consider underwater acoustic channel properties. This group of algorithms utilizes additional information about the environment and its impact on acoustic signal propagation, in order to improve the accuracy of location estimates, or to achieve a reduced complexity, or a reduced amount of resources (e.g., anchor nodes) compared to traditional algorithms. First, we tackle the problem of passive range estimation using the differences in the times of arrival of multipath replicas of a transmitted acoustic signal. This is a costand energy- effective algorithm that can be used for the localization of autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs), and utilizes information about signal propagation. We study the accuracy of this method in the simplified case of constant sound speed profile (SSP) and compare it to a more realistic case with various non-constant SSP. We also propose an auxiliary quantity called effective sound speed. This quantity, when modeling acoustic propagation via ray models, takes into account the difference between rectilinear and non-rectilinear sound ray paths. According to our evaluation, this offers improved range estimation results with respect to standard algorithms that consider the actual value of the speed of sound. We then propose an algorithm suitable for the non-invasive tracking of AUVs or vocalizing marine animals, using only a single receiver. This algorithm evaluates the underwater acoustic channel impulse response differences induced by a diverse sea bottom profile, and proposes a computationally- and energy-efficient solution for passive localization. Finally, we propose another algorithm to solve the issue of 3D acoustic localization and tracking of marine fauna. To reach the expected degree of accuracy, more sensors are often required than are available in typical commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) phased arrays found, e.g., in ultra short baseline (USBL) systems. Direct combination of multiple COTS arrays may be constrained by array body elements, and lead to breaking the optimal array element spacing, or the desired array layout. Thus, the application of state-of-the-art direction of arrival (DoA) estimation algorithms may not be possible.     Low complexity DOA estimation for wideband off-grid sources based on re-focused compressive sensing with dynamic dictionary

    Under the compressive sensing (CS) framework, a novel focusing based direction of arrival (DOA) estimation method is first proposed for wideband off-grid sources, and by avoiding the application of group sparsity (GS) across frequencies of interest, significant complexity reduction is achieved with its computational complexity close to that of solving a single frequency based direction finding problem. To further improve the performance by alleviating both the off-grid approximation errors and the focusing errors which are even worse for the off-grid case, a dynamic dictionary based re-focused off-grid DOA estimation method is developed with the number of extremely sparse grids involved in estimation refined to the number of detected sources, and thus the complexity is still very low due to the limited increased complexity introduced by iterations, while improved performance can be achieved compared with those fixed dictionary based off-grid methods

    ACOUSTIC LOCALIZATION TECHNIQUES FOR APPLICATION IN NEAR-SHORE ARCTIC ENVIRONMENTS

    The Arctic environment has undergone significant change in recent years. Multi-year ice is no longer prevalent in the Arctic. Instead, Arctic ice melts during summer months and re-freezes each winter. First-year ice, in comparison to multi-year ice, is different in terms of its acoustic properties. Therefore, acoustic propagation models of the Arctic may no longer be valid. The open water in the Arctic for longer time periods during the year invites anthropogenic traffic such as civilian tourism, industrial shipping, natural resource exploration, and military exercises. It is important to understand sound propagation in the first-year ice environment, especially in near-shore and shallow-water regions, where anthropogenic sources may be prevalent. It is also important to understand how to detect, identify, and track the anthropogenic sources in these environments in the absence of large acoustic sensory arrays. The goals of this dissertation are twofold: 1) Provide experimental transmission loss (TL) data for the Arctic environment as it now exists, that it may be used to validate new propagation models, and 2) Develop improved understanding of acoustic vector sensor (AVS) performance in real-world applications such as the first-year Arctic environment. Underwater and atmospheric acoustic TL have been measured in the Arctic environment. Ray tracing and parabolic equation simulations have been used for comparison to the TL data. Generally good agreement is observed between the experimental data and simulations, with some discrepancies. These discrepancies may be eliminated in the future with the development of improved models. Experiments have been conducted with underwater pa and atmospheric pp AVS to track mechanical noise sources in real-world environments with various frequency content and signal to noise ratio (SNR). A moving standard deviation (MSD) processing routine has been developed for use with AVS. The MSD processing routine is shown to be superior to direct integration or averaging of intensity spectra for direction of arrival (DOA) estimation. DOA error has been shown to be dependent on ground-reflected paths for pp AVS with analytical models. Underwater AVS have been shown to be feasible to track on-ice sources and atmospheric AVS have been shown feasible to track ground vehicle sources

    Through-the-Wall Imaging and Multipath Exploitation

    We consider the problem of using electromagnetic sensing to estimate targets in complex environments, such as when they are hidden behind walls and other opaque objects. The often unknown electromagnetic interactions between the target and the surrounding area, make the problem challenging. To improve our results, we exploit information in the multipath of the objects surrounding both the target and the sensors. First, we estimate building layouts by using the jump-diffusion algorithm and employing prior knowledge about typical building layouts. We also take advantage of a detailed physical model that captures the scattering by the inner walls and efficiently utilizes the frequency bandwidth. We then localize targets hidden behind reinforced concrete walls. The sensing signals reflected from the targets are significantly distorted and attenuated by the embedded metal bars. Using the surface formulation of the method of moments, we model the response of the reinforced walls, and incorporate their transmission coefficients into the beamforming method to achieve better estimation accuracy. In a related effort, we utilize the sparsity constraint to improve electromagnetic imaging of hidden conducting targets, assuming that a set of equivalent sources can be substituted for the targets. We derive a linear measurement model and employ l1 regularization to identify the equivalent sources in the vicinity of the target surfaces. The proposed inverse method reconstructs the target shape in one or two steps, using single-frequency data. Our results are experimentally verified. Finally, we exploit the multipath from sensor-array platforms to facilitate direction finding. This in contrast to the usual approach, which utilizes the scattering close to the targets. We analyze the effect of the multipath in a statistical signal processing framework, and compute the Cramer-Rao bound to obtain the system resolution. We conduct experiments on a simple array platform to support our theoretical approach
