Supervised Dictionary Learning
It is now well established that sparse signal models are well suited to
restoration tasks and can effectively be learned from audio, image, and video
data. Recent research has been aimed at learning discriminative sparse models
instead of purely reconstructive ones. This paper proposes a new step in that
direction, with a novel sparse representation for signals belonging to
different classes in terms of a shared dictionary and multiple class-decision
functions. The linear variant of the proposed model admits a simple
probabilistic interpretation, while its most general variant admits an
interpretation in terms of kernels. An optimization framework for learning all
the components of the proposed model is presented, along with experimental
results on standard handwritten digit and texture classification tasks
A Unified Optimization Approach for Sparse Tensor Operations on GPUs
Sparse tensors appear in many large-scale applications with multidimensional
and sparse data. While multidimensional sparse data often need to be processed
on manycore processors, attempts to develop highly-optimized GPU-based
implementations of sparse tensor operations are rare. The irregular computation
patterns and sparsity structures as well as the large memory footprints of
sparse tensor operations make such implementations challenging. We leverage the
fact that sparse tensor operations share similar computation patterns to
propose a unified tensor representation called F-COO. Combined with
GPU-specific optimizations, F-COO provides highly-optimized implementations of
sparse tensor computations on GPUs. The performance of the proposed unified
approach is demonstrated for tensor-based kernels such as the Sparse Matricized
Tensor- Times-Khatri-Rao Product (SpMTTKRP) and the Sparse Tensor- Times-Matrix
Multiply (SpTTM) and is used in tensor decomposition algorithms. Compared to
state-of-the-art work we improve the performance of SpTTM and SpMTTKRP up to
3.7 and 30.6 times respectively on NVIDIA Titan-X GPUs. We implement a
CANDECOMP/PARAFAC (CP) decomposition and achieve up to 14.9 times speedup using
the unified method over state-of-the-art libraries on NVIDIA Titan-X GPUs
Optimized Sparse Matrix Operations for Reverse Mode Automatic Differentiation
Sparse matrix representations are ubiquitous in computational science and
machine learning, leading to significant reductions in compute time, in
comparison to dense representation, for problems that have local connectivity.
The adoption of sparse representation in leading ML frameworks such as PyTorch
is incomplete, however, with support for both automatic differentiation and GPU
acceleration missing. In this work, we present an implementation of a CSR-based
sparse matrix wrapper for PyTorch with CUDA acceleration for basic matrix
operations, as well as automatic differentiability. We also present several
applications of the resulting sparse kernels to optimization problems,
demonstrating ease of implementation and performance measurements versus their
dense counterparts
